Brian Ortega earned the biggest win of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career last night (Sat., March 3, 2018) after becoming the first and only man to stop Frankie Edgar inside the Octagon, knocking out the former Lightweight champion in the co-main event of UFC 222 in Las Vegas, Nevada (watch highlights here).
It was a big blow for “The Answer,” as it means he will no longer get his much-desired championship bout against Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight champion Max Holloway, a fight that will now go to”T-City.” In defeat, though, Edgar got mad respect from “Blessed,” who took to social media to praise Edgar for taking a dangerous fight against Ortega, risking (and eventually losing) a championship bout against the Hawaiian he already had locked up.
You had nothing to gain from taking that fight @FrankieEdgar. But you took it you defended what you already earned. There’s no belt for sacrificing everything but true fans and Jersey knows no belt can outshine what you bring to the sport. Chin up bratha

Surprisingly, former division champion Conor McGregor also took to Twitter to show his love for Edgar, reminding everyone that it could’ve been him fighting at UFC 222 instead of Ortega.
Frankie's career deserved for that to be against me tonight.

Respect Frankie.
Love and respect always!
A true fighters fighter ❤
Interestingly enough, Ortega didn’t get any love from the champ on his biggest win. Of course, it could be an oversight on “Blessed’s” behalf, or he simply wanted to take the time to pay respect to one of the most seasoned veterans in the game after their first two scheduled title fights were axed because of injuries.
Whatever the case may be, Holloway will have plenty of opportunities to mention Ortega, as the two men will indeed collide for the 145-pound strap once Holloway is healthy and ready to get back on the horse. It’s an interesting fight to say the least, as it will feature the two hottest 145-pound fighters in the world, as Ortega has yet to taste defeat, (14-0-1, 6-0-1 UFC), while Holloway is on a ridiculous 12-fight win streak and hasn’t tasted defeat in more than four years.
We are in for a treat.
