Pic: Jake Matthews eye gouge stitched up, ‘sore’ following UFC Perth

New, comments

In the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA), specifically Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), fight fans have seen their fair share of eye injuries. Some just hurt and swell, like the classic thumb to the eye, others require several stitches, and some even rip open tear ducts or leave fighters permanently disfigured.

As for Jake Matthews, he’s somewhere in the middle (pic).

“The Celtic Kid” was eye gouged by Li Jingliang en route to a unanimous decision victory at UFC 221 (recap here), as well as a $50,000 “Fight of the Night” performance bonus. Fortunately, it appears no permanent damage was done, though Matthews is a bit “sore.”

“Everything’s fine,” he said after the fight (via MMA Junkie). “It’s more superficial than anything. It’s not too deep. No hard feelings against him. It’s what happens in fights, and all the best for his next fight, and I hope he does well.”

Last Saturday night’s victory, which took place on the UFC 221 pay-per-view (PPV) main card in Perth, Australia, was the second straight for Matthews, who improves to 6-3 under the UFC banner and 12-3 overall.
