Former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold lost his bid for another title last night (Sat., Feb. 10, 2018) at UFC 221 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside Perth Arena in Perth, Australia, when he was finished by Yoel Romero via third-round knockout.
Rockhold pressured early with hard kicks to the lead leg. Romero returned favor by not only checking a few of the kicks to open up a cut on Rockhold’s shin, but he threatened with monstrous over-the-top left hands that narrowly missed. The tides would turn early into the second round as “Soldier of God” bulled forward with a flurry of combinations and body shots along the cage. Rockhold would start to use his jab to control range and keep the powerful Cuban subdued.
In Round 3, after Rockhold opened up with more jabs, Romero caught the former UFC champion with a ferocious left hand. Rockhold instantly dropped to the canvas and “Soldier of God” landed one more left before the referee was able to step in for the knockout stoppage.

With this performance, Romero proves that he is currently operating at a championship level. If not for a botched weight cut the Olympic silver medalist would have walked away with UFC gold.
Not to worry, though, because UFC president Dana White confirmed after the fight that Romero will get a rematch with current UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker.
