Despite not being able to fight for the title, Yoel Romero will have another shot at middleweight glory later this evening (Sat., Feb. 10, 2018) at UFC 221 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside Perth Arena in Perth, Australia, when he meets former UFC champion Luke Rockhold in the main event.
Remember, Romero is filling in for injured UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker, who defeated “Soldier of God” via unanimous decision back at UFC 213 to claim the interim title.
In order to prepare fight fans for the return of Romero, UFC has highlighted the 40-year-old Cuban in the most recent edition of “KO of the Week.” This time around, the action focuses on Romero’s third-round knockout finish (shown above courtesy of UFC) of Brazilian Ronny Markes at UFC: Fight for the Troops 3 back in 2013, in which “Solider of God” landed a left hand from hell that put the former UFC middleweight down and out.
Only time will tell if Romero can land a punch like this against the well-rounded Rockhold. Few fighters have been able to withstand the power of “Soldier of God,” so it will be interesting to see how Rockhold responds if he’s caught on the chin.
MMAmania.com will deliver LIVE round-by-round, blow-by-blow coverage of the entire UFC 221 fight card, starting with the Fight Pass “Prelims” matches online, which are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. ET, then the remaining undercard balance on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET, before the PPV main card start time at 10 p.m. ET.
