Stipe Miocic made history last night (Sat., Jan. 20, 2018) at UFC 220 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside TD Garden in Boston, Mass., when he successfully defended his UFC heavyweight title for the third-straight time in a unanimous decision win over hyped knockout artist Francis Ngannou.
While Ngannou was able to land some of his patented power shots early on, Miocic weathered the storm, landed crisp combinations, secured a few takedowns, and demonstrated a ridiculous chin. Ngannou tired, was forced to carry Miocic’s weight, and barely offered much offense at all.
Miocic kept the pressure on in the later rounds as Ngannou tried to time one heroic punch. The reigning champion relied on heavy top pressure to sap the knockout artist’s power, and land short, yet very effective, punches from the clinch. There wasn’t much “Predator” could do given his depleted gas tank and inferior technicality on the ground. He was even out-struck 82-0 in the fourth round.

With this performance, Miocic not only breaks the UFC heavyweight record with his third-straight title defense, but proves that technique can still reign supreme over raw power. Given that it’s only January, Miocic may fight two more times in 2018.
That could mean that fight fans finally get to see his long-awaited showdown with former UFC kingpin Cain Velasquez, or maybe even light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier.
