When it comes to altitude, make like Jimmie's Chicken Shack and do whatever it takes (to get you high).

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight titleholder Cain Velasquez wasn't overly-concerned about the elevation in Mexico City, so he didn't spend much time there while preparing for the UFC 188 pay-per-view (PPV) event back in June.

That's why head coach Javier Mendez told Talking Brawls (via MMA Fighting) that newly-crowned champion Fabricio Werdum and his coaches -- already on location for several months -- succeeded where American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) failed.

His words:

"Going into the fight, one minute into it, when he took Fabricio down, then he gets up and I notice he was breathing pretty heavy and I'm like, 'Oh, shit.' I knew there was problems right there. I went, 'Oh my god.' I screwed up. The bottom line is it was my responsibility to prepare my fighter in the best possible way and that night I didn't. I failed. I failed at my job. Regardless of Cain saying it was his fault, it wasn't. It was my fault. It was my responsibility to look into the altitude and all that. There was nothing we could have done on that night to win. It was just a matter of time of when Fabricio was going to take that belt that night. Kudos to him. They did the work. That's what the fight game is all about. You've got to be prepared. He did his job. His coaches did their jobs. I didn't."

Somewhere in Fresno, Calif., Josh Koscheck is saying I told you so.

The good news is, Mendez has a chance to redeem himself -- kinda/sorta -- when Velasquez rematches "Vai Cavalo" later this year (more on that fight here). The Werdum camp doesn't sound too worried about the ex-champ's do-over, but expect the oft-injured Velasquez to come back with a chip on his shoulder (wouldn't be the first time).

For Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight titleholder Fabricio Werdum, capturing the strap from former ruler Cain Velasquez in front of a raucous Mexican crowd at UFC 188 last June felt like a lifetime of hard work had finally been fulfilled.

Werdum fought for the second straight time in Mexico City, Mexico, arriving early and setting up training camp, for what was the toughest test of his career and one that he passed with flying colors. "Vai Cavalo" battered and bruised so-called "Cardio Cain" for three rounds, before latching onto a guillotine choke after Velasquez dove in for a takedown.

Having dispatched of the ex-champ, the soon-to-be 38-year-old Brazilian seems content with watching the rest of the rejuvenated heavyweight division come to blows while earning their shot at the title through a mini-tournament.

"This wasn't like a one camp for three months. This was a camp for a long time. I trained seven years for this moment," Werdum told BJPenn.com. "I think the best way is to have four guys [fight] for the title shot. (Junior) Dos Santos, (Stipe) Miocic, Cain Velasquez, and (Andrei) Arlovski. These guys fight each other. Like, Miocic vs. Cain Velasquez, and Dos Santos vs. Arlovski. Who is the best one and fights a good fight, the best performance fights with me, and that's it."

Indeed, much has to be sorted out in the 265-pound division.

Similarly to the way the Brazilian has risen from UFC castoff to heavyweight kingpin, former champion Andrei Arlovski has enjoyed a career resurgence, stomping out buddy Travis Browne in a slugfest for his second-straight knockout and third Octagon victory in a row.

Colossal Croatian Stipe Miocic is 6-2 in UFC, most recently putting the hurt on Samoan slugger Mark Hunt at UFC Fight Night 65 back in May. Then, there is former heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos, who defeated Miocic in a close contest at UFC on FOX 13.

With the heavyweight division at a standstill for quite some time -- nearly two years to be exact because of Velasquez's injured knee -- Werdum's comment bears some questioning.

One would think that a fighter, who was originally scheduled to fight the champion and instead had to settle for a interim title battle at UFC 180 versus Hunt, would advocate for being more active with his newfound position.

Injuries are an ever-present factor in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA). Creating a tournament would eliminate potential worthy candidates when Werdum, who to the MMA world's knowledge is injury-free, can pick one off on a card later this year.

It's not like Werdum fought five times in the span of 12 months like lightweight No. 1 contender Donald Cerrone, or welterweight champion Robbie Lawler, who participated in three, 25-minute tussles in less than a year.

Maybe this was just a case of a fighter getting too ahead of himself and not thinking a situation through, or perhaps he really does mean it. Most fighters do not attain a belt late in their thirties like Werdum.

He could just want his beauty rest, though, if the UFC comes-a-calling, you can bet the Kings MMA product will answer.

"I need [time off]. I just want to recover my body and my mind. I want to enjoy my family," Werdum said. "I just want a little time to enjoy my belt, but I'll fight anyone, no problem"

Usually, instant rematches in mixed martial arts (MMA) take place when a fight ends in controversial fashion.

That wasn't the case when Fabricio Werdum beat down and eventually submitted Cain Velasquez to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world in the third round headliner of UFC 188 in Mexico City, Mexico (see it again here).

Still, Rafael Cordeiro -- Fabricio's head trainer -- says Cain deserves a chance to get his title back against "Vai Cavalo" based on what the ex-ruler of the 265-pound roost did during his reign as champion.

From his appearance on The MMA Hour (via MMA Fighting):

"It's hard to say names. I believe Cain deserves a rematch because of his history as a champion. He was great. He did things in the heavyweight division nobody did, and Fabricio will start building his history in the heavyweight division. But if somebody has to fight, I believe it's Cain. He deserves [it]. I'm okay with the rematch, no problem. For everything he did in the heavyweight division, I believe he deserves a rematch."

It's a rematch Werdum himself is open to, as he declared immediately after his upset win over Cain that he would gladly give him a do-over in Las Vegas, Nevada. That way, he can prove he's the best fighter with, or without, sucking in the thin air Mexico has to offer.

No excuses!

But a instant do-over is highly-unlikely as UFC president Dana White already confirmed that either Andrei Arlovski or Stipe Miocic would get first crack at Fabricio. Nevertheless, should Cain and Werdum cross paths in the future, Cordeiro is confident his pupil can best the wrestling powerhouse once more.

And a few more times after that, if needed.

Nate Marquardt lost to Kelvin Gastelum by way of technical knockout (TKO) at the UFC 188 pay-per-view (PPV) event last Saturday (June 13, 2015) in Mexico City, after the fight was stopped -- on the advice of the "Great" corner -- between rounds two and three.

But if it was up to coach Trevor Wittman, it would have ended much sooner.

Unfortunately for Marquardt, who admitted to suffering from abdominal cramps and blood pressure issues prior to the bout, officials prevented Wittman from intervening during the actual fight, and yanked the concerned cornerman from the canvas because he was blocking the view.

"Taking needless damage is not good in this sport," Wittman told MMA Junkie. "They grabbed me, and their concern was that people couldn't see. I'm sitting there swearing at these guys, and they're like, ‘Get down. No one can stop the fight but the referee or the doctor.'"

Or the grim reaper.

Here's an excerpt on fight stoppages from the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA):

The referee is the sole arbiter of a contest and is the only individual authorized to stop a contest. The referee may take advice from the ringside physician and/or the Commission with respect to the decision to stop a contest.

The referee and the ringside physician are the only individuals authorized to enter the ring/fighting area at any time during competition other than the rest periods and subsequent to the contest ending.

The full list of rules and regulations here.

The 36-year-old Marquardt (33-15-2) has now dropped five of his last six and has not looked competitive in nearly three years. The good news is, "The Great" will continue to compete in combat sports because he talked to God and that's what God wants him to do.

That is one bad taco...

What's up fight fans? I'm the cage cutaway because someone said a curse word of mixed martial arts (MMA), Tommy Toe Hold!

And this is another episode of TTTHS (The Tommy Toe Hold Show).

Today, I do one of my mock pressers for UFC 188! After every event, I create a post-mortem, highlighting the insanity that is a UFC event.

And "Velasquez vs. Werdum" was no different.

There was plenty to work with, and work with it I did! Not my usual set of characters, but there was so much wackiness on this card that it was not a problem.

We had bad tacos, puking during interviews, and an "eyesplosion" from Eddie Alvarez (see it again here). Indeed, UFC 188 had everything a TTTHS episode could possible want. Other than the Diaz brothers (as if!). And Anderson Silva. And GSP. And Conor McGregor.

But, considering nearly everyone in the episode is someone I rarely feature on the show this one is a lot of fun. UFC Fight Night 69 in Berlin, Germany, this weekend might be a different story, but this week I'm still bringing the funny!

I hope. Enjoy!

If beating Cain Velasquez at UFC 188 last Saturday night (June 13, 2015) wasn't enough to prove that Fabricio Werdum deserves to be the undisputed Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight champion, then perhaps defeating the former champ nine more times will help convince people that "Vai Cavalo" is the real deal.

Something Rafael Cordeiro, Werdum's head trainer, is confident he can do, dismissing the idea that Mexico City's thin air deserves as much credit as his student.

Cordeiro elaborates to MMA Fighting:

"Werdum fights Cain Velasquez 10 times, he wins 10 times. I think people should stop finding explanations for results. If you lost, you lost, go back to the gym and train. It's a sport. Got a bad result? Train harder. The altitude was the same for everyone. The fight was announced and everybody knew they would have to deal with altitude, so go there one month earlier. But even if you go there one month before, that's not a guarantee that you're going to win. You have to be prepared to fight. We always believed in Werdum, and he proved he's the best fighter on the planet."

To his credit, Velasquez isn't making any excuses.

With that in mind, an immediate rematch is probably not even in consideration, though it's not too far-fetched to believe Cain and Fabricio will meet a few more times inside the Octagon before all is said and done.

Of course, it's no guarantee the title will be on the line, as Werdum has a steady line of challengers waiting and capable of dethroning him at any given moment (the line starts here).

If and when they do cross paths again, the safe bet is to put your money on "Vai Cavalo," according to his coach.

Anyone disagree?

Sorry, "Vai Cavalo," it's all about your overall resume, according to Matt Brown.

Welterweight contender Matt Brown -- much like Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White -- isn't ready to crown Fabricio Werdum "the greatest of all time" after dethroning Cain Velasquez at last weekend's (Sat., June 13, 2015) UFC 188 event in Mexico (see it).

Not even defeating Fedor Emelianenko -- which Werdum did in 2010 -- is good enough to earn the title of G.O.A.T.

During his recent conversation on The Great MMA Debate podcast, Brown insists that as impressive as Werdum's victory was, you don't become the greatest of all time by defeating one of the greatest of all time.

His words:

"I can't even say that, man. He just now got the belt, he just now unified the belt. It's kind of like saying (Chris) Weidman is the greatest because he beat one of the greatest. You've got to make your own way. The whole 'greatest of all time' (debate) is not a linear thing. You don't take that from someone just because you beat them. Larry Holmes didn't become the greatest when he beat (Muhammad) Ali. Know what I mean? It doesn't work that way."

Strong point.

While he may not be there (yet), Werdum could capture the label before his mixed martial arts (MMA) career is over.

Just looking at his track record -- which includes his current six-fight win streak and victories over several notable champions -- it will be hard to not include "Vai Cavalo" in the conversation. Especially if he defends the UFC's 265-pound title a few times.

Who that will be against first, remains to be seen.

All you have to do is look at the current rankings, says "JDS."

Fabricio Werdum is quickly learning that the target on his back gets a whole lot bigger now that he's the undisputed Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight champion of the world.

And one man who is desperately aiming for his title is none other than Junior dos Santos, who told Sportv after last weekend's (Sat., June 13, 2015) UFC 188 event -- which saw Fabricio submit Cain Velasquez to claim the crown -- that based on his No. 2 ranking, he should be the one to face "Vai Cavalo" first.

His words (via Bloody Elbow):

"I'm working towards that, no doubt about it. I think this result benefits me a little. I can't say I was cheering for Werdum or Velasquez, it didn't matter to me. But people were saying it wasn't the time for a fourth fight with Cain, so I was against the politics. Now, if I'm next on the rankings, I must fight the champion. I think this Werdum win clears up the division and I can get this title shot I want so bad."

As for the fight itself, Junior gives Werdum his props for handling Cain with his great strategy and eventually catching him with the guillotine.

"Kudos to Werdum because he would attack, stop, breathe and attack again. He got a guillotine that was pretty much perfect. It was a mistake Velasquez knew he couldn't make and Werdum was waiting for him to make. It all fell into place."

Dos Santos -- who was last seen outpointing Stipe Miocic at UFC on FOX 13 last December -- already holds a win over "Vai Cavalo," which came in 2008 after the Brazilian landed the uppercut heard around the world to make his successful Octagon debut.

Since that loss, Werdum has gone on a tear, winning nine of his last 10 fights with his only other loss coming at the hands of Alistair Overeem in 2010. Speaking of "The Reem," he too, wants a crack at the new champion, as he believes he is the one to expose the Brazilian's weaknesses.

Only one can get first dibs against the new heavyweight kingpin.

Who should it be?
