Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight champion, Ben Henderson, ended his two-fight losing skid this past weekend (Sat., Feb. 14, 2015) at UFC Fight Night 60 in dramatic fashion, moving up to welterweight on two weeks notice and taking out the much bigger Brandon Thatch via fourth round submission.

Watch full video highlights here.

Immediately after his win, a toothpick was seen surfacing out of Henderson's mouth. While it may not have been a surprise to many given his love for toothpicks, some were shocked to find out he had competed with the sharp object in his mouth the entire fight (again).

As dangerous as one might think it is, "Smooth" declared on "The MMA Hour" earlier this afternoon that taking on a much bigger man who is trying to beat the crap out of him is just as, if not more, dangerous. Plus, according to him, he isn't breaking any rules.

"I can't confirm or deny that. But, I will say I am pretty sure there aren't any rules or regulations forbidding against having a toothpick in your mouth (while you fight). I don't think it's illegal and I don't think it's against the rules. It's as dangerous for me to have a toothpick in my mouth as it is for me to go against a 200-pound guy that is going to punch my face hard or try to kick me in my face. I'm more worried about that to be honest. I'm more worried about the 200-pound man who is going to beat the crap out of me if I let him."

In fact, Henderson says he does it more often than people realize.

"No, I don't have any superstitions like that. I won the world title with the toothpick and I defended it without a toothpick. It all depends, sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. It's a bad habit, I know I shouldn't do it. I do it everyday in practice and I do it for most or all of my fights. It is what it is."

And for those wondering if he's ever accidentally swallowed one, "Smooth" says he has, but not during a fight, rather trying to sneak out and surprise his mother.

On the heels of his latest revelation, Octagon-side officials will most likely again be on the lookout for Henderson's toothpicks prior to letting him proceed to the cage.

As far as his fight future, Henderson says he isn't sure at which weight class he'll fight next, revealing he's just interested in testing himself against the best and toughest each division has to offer.

Who do you want to see him (and his toothpick) fight next?

Unfortunately for Ben Henderson, his win over Brandon Thatch in a welterweight scrap didn't help improve his position at lightweight.

The official Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) rankings have been updated following UFC Fight Night 60, which went down this past weekend (Sat., Feb. 14, 2015) at 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colorado.

After outgunning and outscoring Cole Miller in the co-main event (video highlights), Max Holloway made the biggest leap in this week's rankings, as he can now call himself a top-10 featherweight as he claimed the No. 10 spot after previously being ranked No. 13.

As for the night's biggest winner, Ben Henderson, his victory over Brandon Thatch (recap) didn't do much for his position, mostly because the bout was contested at welterweight and "Smooth" normally competes at lightweight.

In other interesting movement, UFC bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw can now says he's one spot better than Anderson Silva on the pound-for-pound list.

Losing to Ben Henderson may not be the worst thing in the world.

Another weekend of fisticuffs has come and gone as UFC Fight Night 60 blew the roof off the 1STBANK Center this past weekend (Sat., Feb. 14, 2015) in Broomfield, Colorado.

Plenty of fighters were left licking their wounds, including Kiichi Kunimoto, who was beat down and eventually choked out by local boy Neil Magney (recap). And Cole Miller, who was picked apart by featherweight contender Max Hollaway (highlights).

But which fighter is suffering from the worst post-fight hangover, now 48 hours removed from the show?

Brandon Thatch.

The rising welterweight contender looked to make a successful return to the cage after sitting on the sidelines for over a year due to injury. If stepping into the Octagon after such a long layoff wasn't tough enough, Thatch had to deal with a change of on opponent just two weeks from fight night.

And not just any opponent, but a former champion in the form of Ben Henderson.

Many fans (and pundits) were convinced the switch would only benefit "Rukus," as he would be battling a man who normally competes at lightweight, which meant the former kickboxer would enjoy an obvious size and strength advantage.

Once the action started, it seemed that Benson was in for a long night, as Thatch -- who looked two weight classes heavier -- started the action early by walking down his foe with constant pressure in search of his eleventh straight first-round victory.

Henderson's gameplan wasn't a secret, either.

Stick and move.

And at the end of the first five minutes, Henderson earned himself a small victory, becoming the first man in seven years to survive more than five minutes against Thatch.

In rounds two and three, Thatch used his size to his advantage and absorbed most of Benson's body blows with little to no effect while landing a couple of seemingly effortless throws. Benson, however, proved game, as he managed to take down the larger man and do some damage to Brandon's right eye.

After nearly sinking in a rear-naked choke in round three, Benson realized the one way he could level out the playing field was to take the fight to the ground. He was right, as "Smooth" managed to once again take Thatch down with a tackle that would make J.J. Watt proud. From there, it was all she wrote, as Benson forced "Rukus" to tap after perfectly executing the rear-naked choke (see it again here).

Despite the setback, there's no shame for Brandon in losing to smaller foe, as he isn't the first and won't be the last person to come up short against someone smaller. Because if the Octagon has taught us anything since 1993, it's that size doesn't matter.

He can also hold his head high, as taking on a seasoned former champion is no easy task for anyone. Especially one trying to avoid a third straight loss on short notice.

For Thatch, a bout against Jordan Mein would be perfect comeback fight. These two men were originally scheduled to tango last year. And with both coming up short in their last outings, re-booking the 170-pound showdown makes now as good a time as any.

Any objections?

Former UFC lighweight champion Benson Henderson put on an awe-inspiring performance against the highly touted welterweight prospect Brandon Thatch in the main event of UFC Fight Night 60 this past Saturday night (Feb. 14, 2015). Snapping a frustrating losing streak with a sensational submission, MMAmania.com ponders what could be next for "Smooth."

Almost nobody gave former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight kingpin Benson Henderson a chance against the highly touted wrecking machine that is Brandon Thatch on short notice, but not only did "Smooth" hold his own, he earned his most impressive victory inside the Octagon to date.

On just two weeks' notice -- and fighting in the welterweight division for the first time against a much bigger man -- Henderson broke down the hometown favorite Thatch in the main event of UFC Fight Night 60 this past Saturday night (Feb. 14, 2015) from inside the 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colorado (highlights here).

After a rough first two rounds for the former champ, "Smooth" stormed back in the third and fourth, showing off his championship spirit en route to an unbelievable rear-naked choke in the fourth frame.

It was truly one of the most awe-inspiring victories inside the Octagon in quite some time, and Henderson reveled in his moment to shine. But as always, the MMA community could not wait to here what was next for "Smooth."

Although the former champ threw his name in the ringer to face off against Rory MacDonald in his post-fight interview -- following Hector Lombard being yanked from their scheduled welterweight affair at UFC 186 due to a positive test for steroids -- UFC President Dana White shot that down in a hurry, claiming "Red King" already had a fight lined up.

Leading up to fight night, Henderson was asked nearly a dozen times whether he would be staying in the 170-pound division -- which he noted would more than likely be only a temporary romp as a "favor" to UFC brass -- but after such a dramatically impressive performance in Colorado, it would be hard to suggest the former champion return to his old stomping grounds in the lightweight division.

Henderson has lost two straight lightweight bouts -- although his unanimous decision loss to the streaking Donald Cerrone last month at UFC Fight Night 59 was hotly contested -- so his options may be limited in the stacked 155-pound division.

Considering "Smooth" is fresh off a submission victory in the 170-pound division, maybe the former champ does decide to stay and take a crack at the Top-10 -- although he will be giving up a ridiculous size advantage.

If Henderson opts to stay at welterweight I would be interested to see bouts against former Strikeforce champion Tarec Saffiedine, or resurgent contender Thiago Alves. If lightweight is in the MMA Lab Product's future, I would love to see him fight the winner of Edson Barboza vs Michael Johnson at UFC Fight Night 61 next weekend.

Regardless of "Smooth's" next move, we can bask in the glory of his incredible short notice victory in Colorado on Valentine's Day evening for the foreseeable future.

Last night (Sat., Feb. 14, 2015), Kevin Lee and Michel Prazeres battled at UFC Fight Night 60 inside the 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colorado. In a strong showing, Lee earned the unanimous decision. Find out how below!

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweights Kevin Lee and Michel Prazeres look to take another step forward last night (Sat., Feb. 14, 2015) at UFC Fight Night 60 inside 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colorado.

Possessing all the signs of a future contender, Lee definitely had some eyes on him last night. In his first match up with a smothering top player, Lee looked to prove that his wrestling was up to snuff.

Meanwhile, Prazeres entered the bout undefeated as a lightweight and looking to announce himself as a force in the division. At 31 years old, Prazeres needs to make his impact sooner rather than later, and last night was his opportunity to separate himself from the pack.

As usual, Prazeres wasted no time at the start of the bout, immediately shooting for a takedown. Lee scrambled up to his feet quickly, but the Brazilian took his back standing. However, Prazeres was not able to do much with the position, and Lee was soon back to his feet.

For the rest of the round, both men exchanged punches. Neither man really controlled the tempo of the striking, as they both landed some hard shots while standing in front of each other. Near the end of the round, Lee began taking over just a bit, but it was still a very close round overall.

After a brief striking exchange, Prazeres latched back onto his opponent's waist to start the second. He landed a few takedowns on his younger foe, but Lee was always quick to pop right back up. Then, at about the halfway point, Lee landed a takedown on an exhausted Prazeres.

Prazeres stood up fairly fast, but Lee returned him to his back with about two minutes left. From there, Lee controlled his opponent from within the guard until the bell, landing small strikes and putting a stamp on the round.

For much of the final frame, Lee and Prazeres stood flat-footed in front of each other and landed a majority of the strikes they threw. Overall, Lee was the fresher fighter and landed the better strikes during these exchanges.

Then, Lee landed a powerful double leg takedown with about two minutes remaining. It became clear just how tired Prazeres was, as Lee absolutely dominated the Brazilian on the mat with ground strikes. He even threatened the jiu-jitsu black belt with a rear naked choke late, though he could not secure the finish.

Lee's defensive wrestling was pretty excellent in this bout. Prazeres' chain takedowns have largely been unstoppable thus far in his career, and his top game is usually incredibly tight. Instead, Lee stuffed the shots, did damage while Prazeres looked for his takedown, and then reversed takedowns later in the fight.

Though Lee won a majority of the striking exchanges, he allowed it to be closer than necessary. Not only did he stand flat-footed and directly in front of the Brazilian, but he also dropped his lead hand pretty frequently. For his trouble, Lee earned some thick bruises around his eyes.

Next time, Lee should look to follow his game plan and utilize his movement.

Still, that was an impressive performance by the young fighter. Lee hasn't yet earned a top 15 fighter and should continue to be brought along slowly. There are plenty of lightweights in the middle of the division; a match up with any of them would make sense.

Prazeres simply never got into his game in this bout. It's clear that the altitude affected him, as he slowed down before the first round was over. Once he was fatigued, Prazeres simply couldn't compete with his opponent.

This was Prazeres' first loss inside the lightweight division. Expect Prazeres to be matched up with another up-and-coming fighter -- he's a very good litmus test for the division's many prospects -- such as Beneil Dariush.

At UFC Fight Night 60, Kevin Lee handed Michel Prazeres the second loss of his career. How high can the young lightweight climb in such a talent-rich division?

Last night (Sat., Feb. 14, 2015), Neil Magny and Kiichi Kunimoto looked to extend their win streaks at UFC Fight Night 60 inside the 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colorado. In a dominant victory, Neil Magny secured a late rear naked choke. Find out how below!

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweights Neil Magny and Kiichi Kunimoto exchanged blows last night (Sat., Feb. 14, 2015) at UFC Fight Night 60 inside 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colorado.

After a highly impressive 2014 -- in which Magny won five straight bouts -- the Colorado native was set to break into the rankings sometime soon. Obviously, a victory over Kunimoto would definitely aid that goal.

On the other hand, Kunimoto entered this bout on a rather surprising win streak of his own. If he managed to break Magny's streak, "Strasser" would definitely be worthy of a ranked opponent.

Unfortunately for the Japan-native, Magny is the man who takes another step forward.

Magny kept the pressure on his opponent early. Rather than his usual movement-based boxing, Magny really walked his opponent down with long punches and then threw hard knees once Kunimoto was backed into the fence.

In order to avoid this barrage, Kunimoto changed levels and aimed for a double leg. However, Magny defended nicely and the two traded positions in the clinch. During these grappling exchanges, Magny was very active with his strikes and did plenty of damage.

Overall, it was a very dominant round for the Grudge MMA-trained fighter.

Magny quickly started the round by punching into the clinch and landing some nice knees. Kunimoto remained calm and finally succeeded in securing a body lock, which allowed him to land a quick trip into half guard. For a minute or so, Kunimoto controlled his foe from the top position.

However, when Magny sprung up and landed a heavy combination, badly rocking the Japanese fighter. Magny slipped on a knee strike but still managed to gain top position. Slowly, Magny advanced into back mount and nearly finished with ground strikes, but he ran out of time.

Another strong round for Magny.

Looking to continue his dominance, Magny quickly took his opponent down and moved into back control. From there, he flattened Kunimoto out and landed some nice strikes. When Kunimoto looked to push up and get his hips under him, Magny locked in a rear naked choke.

The crowd went wild for its hometown fighter.

Magny had yet another very strong performance in this bout. His striking was very crisp, as he battered his opponent both at range and inside the clinch. Outside of a single takedown, he largely nullified his opponent's offense.

In addition, Magny's more aggressive pursuit of the finish continued in this fight. Once Magny began to take control, he really upped the pressure and began slamming strikes into his opponent constantly. Of course, it greatly helps that Magny's conditioning is excellent, and he's used to the Colorado altitude.

At this point, Magny clearly deserves a ranked fighter. He's on a very long win streak, but it's not over top-tier competition. For his next bout, a fight with the winner of Demian Maia and Ryan LaFlare would make sense.

Kunimoto simply got overwhelmed in this bout. His minute of top pressure looked good, but outside of that, Kunimoto got battered. There's not a lot to take away from it; Magny was the better fighter in every area of the sport.

For the Japanese fighter's next bout, a match up with a lower tier welterweight like Igor Araujo could work.

At UFC Fight Night 60, Neil Magny put a beating on Kiichi Kunimoto. Is the lengthy welterweight a future title contender?

It appears the former lightweight champion may want to stay at welterweight after all.

After an awe-inspiring performance in the main event of UFC Fight Night 60 last night (Sat., Feb. 14, 2015) live on FOX Sports 1 from the 1STBANK Center in Colorado (results here), that saw former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson submit rising welterweight contender Brandon Thatch in the fourth round, you just knew "Smooth" would have something special to offer in the post-fight interview.

After fielding questions all week regarding whether or not his move to welterweight was permanent -- which he noted was nothing more than a mere "favor" to UFC brass -- Henderson opted to call out No. 2 ranked 170-pound contender Rory MacDonald in his post-fight interview with Jon Anik.

With "Red King's" scheduled UFC 186 bout against Hector Lombard scratched following a positive test for steroids from the former Bellator champ, "Smooth" is throwing his name in the ringer to fight the top-ranked welterweight contender.

Considering how much bigger Brandon Thatch was against Henderson in Colorado, it may not be the best career move to fight MacDonald his next time out, but then again, this could be "Smooth's" route back to UFC gold.

MacDonald took the call out in stride, noting that even lightweights now want a piece of him.

Unfortunately for Henderson, UFC president Dana White shot down the potential match-up at the post-fight press conference (replay here), noting MacDonald "has a fight lined up already."
