It's been a terrible start for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) champions ... past and present.

First Light Heavyweight kingpin Jon Jones gets caught doing cocaine (read more details here). Now Middleweight legend, Anderson Silva, flunked an out-of-competition drug test ahead of his comeback fight against Nick Diaz at UFC 183, which took place inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Is not normal.

UFC.com breaks the bad news:

"On February 3, 2015, the UFC organization was notified by the Nevada State Athletic Commission that Anderson Silva tested positive for Drostanolone metabolites on his Jan. 9 out of competition drug test. UFC’s understanding is that further testing will be conducted by the Commission to confirm these preliminary results. Anderson Silva has been an amazing champion and a true ambassador of the sport of mixed martial arts and the UFC, in Brazil as well as around the world. UFC is disappointed to learn of these initial results. The UFC has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents by its athletes."

Drostanolone is an anabolic steroid that, according to Wiki, "has been used for bodybuilding, mainly in 'cutting cycles.'" In addition to this banned substance, Silva also had androsterone -- another performance-enhancing drug (PED) -- in his system, according to Ariel Helwani.

UFC 183 marked Silva's dramatic return to the Octagon from a fractured shin, which occurred during his rematch with Middleweight champion Chris Weidman in Dec. 2013. He defeated Diaz via unanimous decision after five rounds of action (watch video highlights here), a result that will likely now be overturned to a "No Contest."

That's because, according to Kevin Iole of Yahoo!Sports.com, Diaz -- once again -- failed his post-fight drug test because of marijuana.

What a mess.

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Sure he's missed a few press conferences here and there, but through all the bad rap he gets, when it comes to granting interviews and answering questions, Nick Diaz, for the most part, has no problem giving the media a few sound bytes.

Just don't try to catch him off guard ahead of one of the biggest fights of his career.

That's what ultimately forced the Stockton, Calif., slugger to miss his original flight to Las Vegas, Nevada, last week ahead of the UFC 183 open workouts, a fan-inspired event he ultimately missed.

According to his head coach, Cesar Gracie, who appeared on The MMA Hour (via MMA Fighting), Diaz wasn't in the mood to answer surprise questions. So, when he got to the airport and saw the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) "Embedded" crew on hand to film his every move, Diaz did his best Houdini act.

"He didn't know about the camera crew there. They totally caught him off guard. He wasn't ready for it. He was uncomfortable and he wouldn't be able to rest. So he said, 'Hey, I'm catching a different plane' and then he left. Nick wasn't prepared for that. He was just trying to get into fight mode and rest and everything. He didn't want to answer a bunch of questions. He didn't want the spectacle of it at that point. He was trying to mentally get himself geared in."

Diaz eventually made it to "Sin City" later that day after he ran back home to pick up a few essentials, which is the reason he gave for bailing on the flight.

In the end, Diaz apologized for being "inconsiderate" and fulfilled the rest of his duties by showing up to media day, coming in on weight, showing up on fight night and going through 25 minutes of action against the former Middleweight champion Anderson Silva (video highlights).

Even though he lost a decision to one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, Diaz, yet again, managed to steal the spotlight on Super Bowl weekend by doing things his own way.

And you're still not going to hate him ... no matter how hard you try.

Because there's not better way than going out with a "W."

Anderson Silva returned to the Octagon this past weekend (Sat., Jan. 31, 2015) at UFC 183 to take on Nick Diaz after more than a year-long absence from fighting because of a gruesome leg break in his previous outing.

And the results were great for the former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight champion, as he outstruck and outpointed the Stockton slugger, all while proving that his leg can hold up for 25 minutes of action.

To watch a full video replay click here.

After the bout, "The Spider" declared he was uncertain what his future in mixed martial arts (MMA) holds, hinting at the possibility of retirement (though some aren't buying it). But, there are a select few out there who would like to see the Brazilian bomber hang up the gloves for good, including a man who knows him very well:

Chris Weidman.

During his appearance on The MMA Hour, "All American" says as a fan of Silva's, he'd love nothing more than to see one of the greatest of all time walk away from the hurt business on a winning note.

His words (via MMA Fighting):

"Being the champion, I know this ends up going further than I'd even want my comments to go, because my opinion, I don't think, really matters that much and I don't want it to weigh on him at all. But me as a fan, if I'm just a normal person, I want to see him done. As Chris Weidman, as me, it's a big money fight, a third fight eventually. But I'd really just like to see him retire. I think he's got a great family, he's got five kids, he's made a lot of money, he has a great legacy. He just won a fight. I wouldn't mind seeing him retire on a ‘W'."

Retiring with a "W" is much better than the alternative had Silva decided to walk away after suffering his only two losses inside the Octagon, which came at the hands of Weidman.

And though "All American" -- the current UFC middleweight champ -- says he has grown to respect his rival, he couldn't help but to label his fight against Diaz "weird." And despite coming out the victor, Silva is nowhere near a title shot in his eyes.

"It was a very weird fight. I have a lot of respect for both fighters, especially Anderson, fighting him twice. I've actually grown to respect Anderson even more. I spoke to him a couple times at 'The Time is Now' event and I think he really has grown as a person. He's a likable guy, he really has become a family guy, more spiritual. I think he's just really grown as a person, so I have a lot of respect for him. In the fight, you know, I'm happy that he came back. He was healthy, he was able to go out there and get a W. But do I think he looked impressive? No. I don't think he's what everybody thought Anderson would look like and what he could do to Nick Diaz. There was a lot going against him with the leg injury, it didn't seem like he was kicking the legs as much as he usually could. But, you know, I don't know. I don't think he deserves a title shot. There's a lot of other guys that I think are better than him right now."

Of course, Silva isn't too interested in the title at the moment, anyway.

So while no one knows exactly what Silva's next move is, you can bet he'll mull it over real good because walking away from paydays like this is easier said than done ... regardless of how much coin you already have stuffed in your piggy bank.

Wrapping up the UFC 183 weekend with quick links to all the major storylines.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) closed out a wild and wacky month of January by staging UFC 183: "Silva vs. Diaz," the promotion's latest and greatest pay-per-view (PPV) offering from inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Jan. 31, 2015.

And let's not pretend it went off without a hitch.

Aside from two competitors missing weight by a mile (more on that here), the featherweight showdown between Jim Hettes and Diego Brandao was canceled after "The Kid" was hospitalized prior to the event. Both fighters were paid their "show" money.

As for the rest of the card?

It was a hot-and-cold event from top-to-bottom, but the main story coming out of UFC 183 -- of course -- is the return of the surgically-repaired Anderson Silva, who spent 25 minutes banging it out with welterweight import and former Strikeforce champion Nick Diaz.

Missed some or all of the show? Too hung over from Super Bowl 49 to remember what happened?

Meja once said it was all about the money.

Well, apparently not. At least not when it comes to professional athletes like Nick Diaz. Sure, the UFC 183 headliner wants to get paid -- and paid well -- but it's not exactly his ideal scenario to keep losing fights. And for those of you keeping score, it's now three in a row.

"I'm kind of tired of being a loser," Diaz told reporters at the UFC 183 post-fight press conference (watch it here). "I'm still here, but I'm losing all these fights. I'm doing well though, as far as this being a job, versus the other guys that are out there. So yeah, I'm happy, I guess, to put on a show for these fans. So I don't know what to make of it right now."

Diaz is convinced he won all five rounds of his UFC 183 headliner (watch it).

That's where he battled former middleweight champion Anderson Silva, who like the welterweight import, was making his first appearance in well over a year -- albeit for different reasons -- last Saturday night (Jan. 31, 2015) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

And now Diaz gets to experience what it's like to make "Anderson Silva money."

"Nick made a lot of money tonight," UFC President Dana White said after the fight. "You might not see him for three years this time."

Perhaps he can afford his brother a short-term loan.

Diaz competes so infrequently because he's only interested in taking big fights, like the one against "The Spider," or championship bouts at 170 pounds. The former will be determined on a case-by-case basis while the latter ... well, that may require a few wins inside the division.

Then again, it may not.

After the captivating UFC 183: "Silva vs Diaz" event, MMAmania.com ponders what is next for the main card winners who picked up victories last Saturday (Jan. 31, 2015) on pay-per-view inside MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) capped off a whirlwind month of January with a mammoth pay-per-view (PPV) mixed martial arts (MMA) event this past Saturday (Jan. 31, 2015), as the former long-time middleweight champion returned to the win column for the first time in about 28 months in front of a sold-out crowd in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Anderson Silva made his way to the cage in MGM Grand last evening for the first time in 13 months in the main event of UFC 183, having not stepped into the Octagon since his horrendous leg fracture back in late 2013. Although "The Spider" looked a bit timid early on, the former champion toughed it out for 25 minutes en route to an impressive unanimous decision victory over Nick Diaz (highlights here).

The co-main event unfortunately did not live up to the hype, as Tyron Woodley and Kelvin Gastelum put on a mediocre show in "Sin City." With the fight already hampered by Gastelum missing weight by 10 pounds on Friday, the two men simply refused to kick it up a notch over the 15-minute affair, leaving many fans frustrated and bemused. In the end, Woodley picked up the split decision victory, but he will definitely need another win before a title shot.

Check out the highlights here.

With that quick recap of the night's marquee bouts, it is now time to play matchmaker with our "Next Matches To Make:"

Winner: Thiago Alves
Who Should He Fight Next: Tarec Saffiedine

After a troubling first round that saw Jordan Mein absolutely batter former No. 1 contender Thiago Alves, it seemed that "Pitbull" was essentially nothing more than a punching bag for "Young Gun" heading into the second frame.

Instead, Alves came out firing, blasting Mein with a brutal body kick that ultimately led the American Top Team product to a (technical) knockout victory just minutes into the second round (highlights here). The finish for Alves was his first inside the Octagon since his jaw-dropping flying knee finish over former champion Matt Hughes way back in 2008.

After a two-year sabbatical nursing injuries, Alves has now won back-to-back fights inside UFC, and should be ranked come Monday morning. With that being said, why not match up the brutal kicker with former Strikeforce champion and kicking aficionado Tarec Saffiedine?

Not only does the bout make sense in terms of the division rankings, but the on paper match-up would have fans absolutely giddy with excitement.

Winner: Thales Leites
Who Should He Fight Next: Gegard Mousasi

It is time we all stop doubting Thales Leites, and recognize the resurgent contender is no longer the one-dimensional jiu-jitsu specialist that fought Anderson Silva way back in 2009.

After a "Fight of the Night" performance that saw Leites and Tim Boetsch throw down for about 9 minutes, the Brazilian ultimately choked out his American counterpart with a beautifully set-up arm-triangle finish.

Since returning to the Octagon in 2013, the Brazilian has reeled off five straight victories, including three finishes in a row. His run that helped him earn back a UFC roster spot? Leites defeated three UFC veterans, two via finish. Needless to say, there are few fighters in the world as hot as Thales Leites right now.

Quickly becoming must-see television, the Brazilian absolutely deserves a crack at a Top-10 opponent, and I believe Gegard Mousasi fits that bill perfectly. I could see these men sharing a main event slot on a future UFC Fight Pass card, with the winner potentially earning a Top-5 bout their next time out.

Winner: Al Iaquinta
Who Should He Fight Next: Jorge Masvidal

How stacked is the lightweight division? Well, considering Al Iaquinta is not yet ranked, you have a pretty good idea just how good the 155-pound division is today.

After earning his third straight (technical) knockout finish, this time over the notoriously durable Joe Lauzon, "Raging" Al will undoubtedly break into the Top-15 this Monday. Considering he asked for a ranked opponent for his next bout, I would have no problem with the former The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) runner-up taking on Jorge Masvidal his next time out.

With Benson Henderson moving up to the welterweight division to replace Stephen Thompson at UFC Fight Night 61, the former lightweight champion left Masvidal without a dance partner for the co-main event slot at UFC Fight Night 63 in April.

Hopefully the Long Island native is up for a quick turnaround against a tough opponent in "Gamebred."

Winner: Tyron Woodley
Who Should He Fight Next: Carlos Condit

Tyron Woodley is in an odd predicament moving forward in the 170-pound division. Having already lost to Rory MacDonald, refusing to fight Hector Lombard, and unable to attain bouts against Johny Hendricks or Matt Brown, the No. 3 ranked welterweight is left with few options.

With that being said, I would be very interested to see "The Chosen One" rematch Carlos Condit when the former Interim champion is ready to return sometime over the next several months.

Back at UFC 171, The "Natural Born Killer" suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and partially torn meniscus during his co-main event bout against Woodley. With Condit stuck on the sidelines, Woodley essentially took his place in line over the last year.

With options limited for the former Strikeforce product, and Condit hungry for vengeance, I think a Fight Night main event suits these men just fine.

Winner: Anderson Silva
Who Should He Fight Next: No one

Family is more important than fighting.

After his victory over Nick Diaz at UFC 183, "The Spider" shared with his fans that his family desperately wants him to retire and call his legendary career quits.

In my mind, I don't see any scenario or fight that is worth going against his family's wishes. In the end, Silva has absolutely nothing left to prove, and he has the rare opportunity to choose when he hangs up his gloves.

In MMA history, we have seen legends far too often have their careers decided for them. Whether it was Chuck Liddell getting knocked out in three straight fights, Randy Couture eating a devastating crane kick from Lyoto Machida, or Dan Henderson refusing to retire following a 1-5 stint, it is seemingly an unfortunate custom for Hall of Famers to "go out on their shield."

Forget Silva's performance last night for just a minute. Whether or not you enjoyed the show the Brazilian legend put on inside the Octagon at UFC 183, you must respect the former champion's resiliency and determination to return to the cage following his horrific leg fracture back at UFC 168.

Had Diaz absolutely wiped the floor with Silva last night, we still could have chalked up a moral victory for the former champion in returning from such a terrible injury.

In the end, Silva can opt to retire on top, and I am all for that.

That's a wrap!

Last night (Sat., Jan. 31, 2015), Thiago Alves and Jordan Mein competed in a stand-up duel at UFC 183 inside the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. In an incredible comeback win, "Pitbull" finished his foe with a body kick. Find out how below!

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweights Jordan Mein and Thiago Alves looked to position themselves as top contenders last night (Sat. Jan. 31, 2015) at UFC 183 inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mein entered this bout with a fair bit of momentum, as he looked very good in each of his UFC bouts thus far. Even in his sole loss to Matt Brown in a wild battle, Mein had his moments and demonstrated his fluid boxing skills. With a win over his veteran foe, Mein hoped to break into the top 10.

Alves, meanwhile, was looking to earn the first high-profile victory since he dispatched Josh Koscheck way back at UFC 90. The Brazilian desperately needed this win if he ever hoped to make his way back to the title, rather than be relegated to a more common action-fighter role.

Mein had a pretty spectacular first frame. For much of the round, Mein avoided the vast majority of his opponent's strikes while landing his own low kicks, right hands, and even elbows.

Then, he turned it up in the final minute. After nearly lifting Alves from his feet with an uppercut, Mein stalked the Brazilian into the fence and swarmed with combinations. To his credit, Alves remained composed, kept his guard high, and even returned some counters.

Still, it was quite a definitive round for Mein.

Mein was very loose to start the second round, even doing a little forward roll at one point. Then -- without absolutely no warning -- Alves uncorked a body kick, which caused Mein to grimace in pain and crumble to the mat. "Pitbull" wasted no time and jumped on his opponent with a violent flurry of punches, ending the bout.

Wow.

Mein did just about everything right in the first round. His movement and angles were excellent, as he was rarely touched and landed plenty of his own heavy strikes. Overall, he simply neutralized the Brazilian.

But none of that mattered once Alves landed his power kick. While it wasn't the dominant victory Alves was surely looking for, it was a phenomenal comeback win and a reminder that "Pitbull" packs legitimate knockout power in each of his strikes.

Additionally, Alves showed that he's no longer a fiery young upstart. Instead, Alves is now the refined veteran, able to endure tough moments, wait for his opportunities, and viciously capitalize.

With this victory, Alves is back in the mix. For his next fight, a rematch against Rick Story -- who upset the Brazilian during his own rise to the top a few years ago -- would certainly be an interesting battle.

As mentioned, Mein fought very well. Perhaps he was a bit too relaxed in the second frame, but everything was going his way up until that point. A lot of times, that same relaxation will allow Mein to open up further and secure the finish.

Mein is still without a signature victory. It's been a while since the Canadian has been forced to deal with a smothering grappler, so a match against Dong Hyun Kim would be a challenge for "Young Guns." Besides, if Kim continues to slug like a mad man, the UFC can never have too many brawls.

At UFC 183, Thiago Alves dispatched of his opponent with a cracking body kick. Can Alves make his way back into the division's elite?

Anderson Silva returned to the Octagon in impressive fashion at UFC 183 last night (Sat., Jan. 31, 2015), but "The Spider" may call it quits following his unanimous decision victory over Nick Diaz.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) fans have long been accustomed to Anderson Silva's seemingly impossible feats inside the Octagon, but almost nobody could have expected "The Spider" to return to the very cage that saw him break his leg in horrific fashion back at UFC 168 in late 2013.

That night, Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg exclaimed that fans around the globe may very well be witnessing the final chapter of the legendary former champion's career.

But, then Silva reminded us all of why he is so special; because time and again he proves doubters wrong, accomplishing what was once deemed impossible.

No matter the outcome of his UFC 183 main event against Nick Diaz last evening (Sat., Jan. 31, 2015) in Las Vegas, Nevada, "The Spider" had already won. Simply by walking to the Octagon -- in the exact venue that saw him break his leg 13 months earlier -- the former champion had proven that nothing can stop him from being the legend he truly is.

Ultimately, the future Hall of Famer did pick up the victory over Diaz (highlights here), and while we only saw short glimpses of "The Spider's" former brilliance, it was evident the former champion had something left to show off for his fans.

Then came the post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, and suddenly MMA seemed so miniscule in terms of importance. Silva shared with Rogan -- and the millions watching around the world -- that his family desperately wanted him to retire from the sport he was the face of for so many years.

"The Spider" then echoed the sentiment at the post-fight press conference (watch the full replay here).

From MMAFighting:

"My son talked to me serious. When I talked to my son, my son cried. 'Dad, stop, please. Back home. Please. You don't need more fights.' I need to talk to my family. I love my job. This is me. I love fight. But, I need to talk to my family, because this is more important to my life now."

With the rare opportunity to hang up his gloves rather than "going out on his shield," it seems that "The Spider" may truly opt to retire once and for all following his victory at UFC 183.

With 17 career UFC victories, an unrivaled highlight-reel, a die-hard legion of fans across the globe, and the respect of every MMA fan and fighter alike, Silva can be proud to retire on his own volition, as the greatest fighter of all time.

He's got nothing left to prove.
