Impressive, indeed.

UFC Fight Night 58 took place last weekend (Sat., Dec 20, 2014) from Sao Paulo, Brazil, and featured a middleweight clash between former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida and C.B. Dollaway.

And the event, which aired on FOX Sports 1, was a ratings hit for the mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion, as it drew an estimated 1.2 million viewers according to a press release courtesy of FOX Sports.

Last Saturday night's UFC® FIGHT NIGHT: MACHIDA VS. DOLLAWAY from Barueri, Brazil averaged 966,000 viewers for FOX Sports 1, a 28% increase over last December's comparable Fight Night (755,000). Saturday night's event ranked as fourth most-watched ever on FOX Sports 1, peaking at 1,237,000 million viewers. Preliminary bouts airing from 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM ET on the cable network averaged 626,000 viewers.

Machida blitzed through Dollaway thanks to a thunderous body kick that put "The Doberman" down for the count (recap). The event also saw former bantamweight kingpin, Renan Barao, get back into the win column after he submitted Mitch Gagnon in the third and final round.

Those numbers are a significant jump from UFC Fight Night 57, which featured a featherweight scrap between former lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar, taking on the heavy-hitting Cub Swanson.

Despite all of the recent bad press UFC has been getting lately, business is still good for the ZUFFA-owned company on FOX Sports 1.

The UFC put a bow on its year of fight cards in Brazil with UFC Fight Night 58 last Saturday night (December 20, 2014). Let's take a look at some of the performances from that card.

The holidays are officially upon us fight fans. And the UFC put a bow on 2014 with its last card of the year, UFC Fight Night 58, on Saturday evening (December 20, 2014).

Sidebar: Excuse my saltiness for I've been defeated by former MMAmania scribe Matt Roth in our MMA Fantasy league title game. My team "Stets B Nation" was 13-1 and winning right up until three Arizona Cardinals couldn't tackle Marshawn Lynch on his way to a 79-yd TD that propelled Roth's "Big Ol' TD's" on to victory 115.74-112.54. He also handed me my lone loss in the regular season. I am absolutely sick over this.

The fight card from Barueri, Brazil was filled with the typical array of names you usually don't recognize on a Brazil card and the main and co-main events were fairly favorable match ups for both former UFC champions, Lyoto Machida and Renen Barao.

And they did what many thought they would do: win.

And then there was "Rampage."

Quinton Jackson didn't quite make a surprise entrance during the night like Cousin Eddie from Christmas Vacation, mostly due to the rumors that were swirling about since a day prior. But his presence (via a recorded message) and announcement that he re-signed with the UFC was definitely odd and awkward, since, according to Bellator president Scott Coker, the former UFC champion is still, in fact, under contract with Bellator.

And also because of how Jackson would tell anyone who would listen during the last year how much he disliked his former employer and how he absolutely loved his new home in Bellator.

The UFC had a media blitz all last week for CM Punk, so it seems they wanted to continue on with the big announcements. It is a very strange choice for the UFC to head into a legal battle with Viacom and Bellator over the rights of a fighter past his prime, when they are already going to have to deal with the class-action lawsuit against them that was announced in the beginning of last week from Cung Le, Jon Fitch and Nate Quarry. But hey, your guess is as good as mine.

For the record, I would be as excited as anyone to see Jackson vs. Mauricio Rua, or "Rampage" vs Dan Henderson again, but beyond that, seeing Jackson against anyone else, to me, is not exciting anymore and hasn't been for quite some time.

That being said, 2015 should have some interesting story lines right out of the gate. It's "The Monday After," so let's look back at some of the fighters and their performances from UFC Fight Night 58.

Erick Silva

How about we pump the brakes on the superlatives of Silva? Yes, he looked fantastic on Saturday night. And he always comes out of the gate at full speed. But, he defeated Mike Rhodes. "Biggie" is now 0-3 in the UFC. Credit to Silva for getting the finish over Rhodes with the side-triangle choke submission and a very deft knee-cut guard pass across the body to gain position for the finish.

Well done.

But Silva has beaten no one worthy of mention in his career. And if anyone mentions Matt Brown vs. Silva as the "Fight of the Year" I am going to lose it. That fight wasn't even "Fight of the Week." Was it a great first round? Yes. Was it a great performance by Brown? Yes. After the first round it was an absolute beat down and one-sided route by Brown. Guess what? That doesn't make it a candidate for "Fight of the Year." How about Johny Hendricks vs. Robbie Lawler? Or maybe, Chris Weidman vs. Lyoto Machida? Those were exciting and highly competitive bouts. If you think Brown vs. Silva was anything but a great performance by Brown you are sadly mistaken and perhaps got lulled in by the hometown Ohio crowd.

Leandro Issa

While Issa is not exactly a household name, he gets mention this week for finishing Yuta Sasaki via neck crank at Fight Night 58. Isaa almost fell victim to a D'arce choke prior to his victory, but survived, turned the tides, got the back of Sasaki and locked up the neck crank for the finish. Neck cranks are still a rarity in MMA, but this one and Frankie Edgar's submission over Cub Swanson at Fight Night 57 makes two in two months. I'll take it and hope we start to see more of them.

Patrick Cummins

What a story this continues to be for Cummins. Yes, he got smashed by Daniel Cormier, but he was slinging triple grande skinny-vanilla lattes and struggling to book fights before that. The loss in his debut to Cormier was on February 22 at UFC 170. Since then, he has won three straight fights. One by technical knockout over Roger Navarez, and two by unanimous decision over Kyle Kingsbury and Antonio Carlos Junior. Saturday night's win over Carlos Junior was another dominant performance where he showcased his wrestling and grappling skills. Yes, he isn't blowing away the top half of the 205 division, but he is carving out a nice career for himself and winning three in a row is never a bad thing.

Renan Barao

I saw a lot of negative reaction toward the former UFC bantamweight champion and I found it very surprising and also, depending on what was being said, just flat out unjustified. Most importantly, he won the fight vs. Mitch Gagnon. Secondly, he won by submission.

However he got to there, he got there (highlights here).

I love reading tweets on fight night (not really) where everyone changes their own criteria as to what a fighter needs to do to move up in rankings or earn a title shot on a consistent basis. Barao's performance wasn't impressive enough? You do realize that opponents aren't going to just lay down for him, right? He isn't going to steam roll everyone he faces in 30 seconds, every fight is a different fight. Some go the distance and some end violently.

The idea that Barao getting a finish -- however the hell he got it -- isn't good enough to put him in the title picture is absurd. He is the former champion and the loss to TJ Dillashaw was his first in over 30 fights. Now he has to finish in a certain fashion to impress you? That is just ridiculous. I have no issue if the UFC wants to put him against the winner of Dominick Cruz vs. TJ Dillashaw, once they fight.

Lyoto Machida

"The Dragon" looked great in his one-minute victory on Saturday night. He usually does against inferior competition. And make no mistake, that is exactly what Dolloway is compared to Machida. It was a winnable fight scheduled for the hometown fighter in the main event akin to a top NCAA football team getting handed a patsy on homecoming weekend. That is not a knock on Dolloway, per se, it's just the facts about his physical limitations against a skilled and technical striker like Machida.

Dolloway is a tough fighter and has had some impressive wins throughout his 9-6 tenure in the UFC, but this was a fight Machida was supposed to win and the Brazilian did so in devastating fashion. No one should be surprised, just like we weren't when Machida crushed the likes of Mark Munoz and Ryan Bader in similar fashion.

The former UFC light heavyweight champion waited for an opening and then delivered a thunderous kick to Dolloway's liver, which sent him to the canvas and left him paralyzed (highlights). Machida then swarmed in with follow-up punches until the referee waved it off.

As for what is next for Machida, it is tough to say what the promotion will do with him next. Maybe Luke Rockhold or maybe the winner of Jacare Souza vs. Yoel Romero could be next. Machida is now 3-1 since dropping down to middleweight and his lone loss in the division is, of course, the title-fight loss to Chris Weidman at UFC 175 last July. I don't think he will get a title fight soon, but depending on whom he faces next, that conversation could change.

Rampage Jackson

Like I said at the beginning of this article, I'll be a sucker for nostalgia and run to watch "Rampage" take on "Shogun" or Dan Henderson, but beyond that, I'm not over enthusiastic in seeing him struggle against the top half of the 205 division. Let's not forget he lost three in a row on his way out of his first UFC tenure to Ryan Bader, Glover Teixeira and Jon Jones. Aside from that, Jackson may not even be allowed to fight in the UFC, depending on the imminent lawsuit from Bellator because they are saying he is still under contract with them. The whole thing is just really odd. We will see how it all shakes out soon enough.

Odell Beckham Jr.

No he isn't a fighter, but he is a straight-up gangster at wide receiver for my beloved New York Giants. I mention him because I feel strongly that the former LSU Tiger will be the NFL offensive "Rookie of the Year." In just 11 games -- he missed the first four due to a hamstring injury -- he has 79 receptions, 1,120 yards and 11 TDs. Beckham still has to play against Philadelphia next week, where he will set for another feasting. Here are some highlights from SB Nation's Big Blue View (here).

Enjoy your Christmas Maniacs!

Hope Santa brings you what you asked for. Thanks for supporting this column, and MMAmania.com. Talk to you all after UFC 182 next week.

And UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis passes Cain Velasquez in the pound-for-pound rankings.

The official Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) rankings have been updated following UFC Fight Night 58, which went down this past weekend (Sat. Dec. 20, 2014) in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Lyoto Machida jumped up one spot to claim the No. 3 position at middleweight over current No. 1 contender to the title, Vitor Belfort, after he sent C.B. Dollaway packing thanks to a thunderous kick to the body that put "The Doberman" down for the count in the main event (video).

The loss, though, didn't hurt Dolloway's position, as he hangs on to his top-10 spot by a string.

Elsewhere, Rafael dos Anjos can now lay claim to the No. 1 position at lightweight, after last week's standing showed he and Khabib Nurmagomedov sharing the top spot (see it). In the pound-for-pound standings, Anthony Pettis surpassed UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez thanks to his impressive submission victory over Gilbert Melendez a few weeks ago (video).

Now that the dust has settled and the smoke has cleared, it's time to find out who's worse for the wear following the carnage at UFC Fight Night 58 this past weekend in Brazil.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) sent 24 mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters into battle last weekend (Sat., Dec. 20, 2014) inside Jose Correa Arena in Barueri, Sao Paulo, Brazil, and not a single one of them escaped a post-fight medical suspension.

The Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission (CABMMA) means business.

Chief among them is middleweight contender CB Dollaway, who will have six months to think about what went wrong in his crushing knockout loss to Lyoto Machida in the FOX Sports 1 main event (replay). Joining "The Doberman" in the six-month club is Mike Rhodes, who had a "Biggie" problem against Erick Silva in the first round of their welterweight affair (watch it).

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases. In addition, not all injuries are recorded during the post-fight examination and often times surface in follow-up tests.

Where does "The Doberman" go from here?

Another weekend of fisticuffs has come and gone, as UFC Fight Night 58 blew the roof off Ginasio Jose Correa this past Saturday (Dec. 20, 2014) in Barueri, Brazil.

Plenty of fighters were left licking their wounds, including Mike Rhodes, who was choked out by Erik Silva early in round one (video). And Mitch Gagnon, who was submitted by Renan Barao in the third and final frame in a highly-entertaining bout (highlights).

But which fighter is suffering from the worst post-fight hangover, 48 hours removed from the show?

C.B. Dollaway.

"Doberman" looked to pick up his highest-profile win to date as he was facing former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion, Lyoto Machida, in a headlining middleweight bout. With a win, C.B. would earn his third straight victory and possibly "leapfrog" his way to the front of the title race and earn his first-ever championship bout.

No such luck.

After a brief feeling out process, Machida landed a crippling body kick right that "paralyzed" Dollaway, giving him no chance to defend himself from the onslaught of punches that followed (video replay). After seeing C.B. absorb more than a few blows to the dome, the referee had no choice but to put a halt to the punishment, and the bout.

While fight fans -- and Dollaway -- would have liked to see more action, the win was a nice feather in Machida's cap and gave him his first win after coming up short in his bid to dethrone division kingpin, Chris Weidman, back at UFC 175 earlier this year.

It also set him up for what will be a very entertaining 185-pound collision against former Strikeforce middleweight champion, Luke Rockhold, sometime in 2015.

As for Dollaway, the loss can't be attributed to something he did wrong. While his colleagues moonlighting as analysts would have hoped C.B would have given himself a chance in the bout by utilizing his wrestling pedigree, he wasn't given the opportunity, as the fight was over shortly before it began, thanks to the well-placed kick.

Which was rather surprising, as Machida is notorious for playing the waiting game and preferring to be the counter attacker rather than the aggressor.

C.B. will now have to go back to the drawing board, regroup, and hope he gets a fight sooner, rather than later, in an effort to erase the memory of his loss to "The Dragon." As he's proven over the last two years, C.B. has the tools to compete with the best in the division.

The 31-year-old veteran has more than enough left in his tank to muster up another run and perhaps get that much-desired title shot. A fight against Michael Bisping -- who also came up sort in his previous bout against the aforementioned Rockhold -- would be a good comeback fight for "The Doberman."

Any objections?

Let's wrap up all the action from UFC Fight Night 58 this past weekend, shall we?

UFC Fight Night 58: "'Machida vs. Dollaway" blew the roof off the Jose Correa Arena in Barueri, Sao Paulo, Brazil on Sat., Dec. 20, 2014, with a top shelf Fox Sports 1 offering -- one of the best in some time, really -- rich with stories you either need to get up to date on or go back and revisit.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida proved he is still a top contender in the middleweight division, taking out CB Dollaway in just 62 seconds via body kick this past Saturday night (Dec. 20, 2014) in the main event of UFC Fight Night 58. Earning a stoppage in UFC's final fight of the year, MMAmania.com ponders what could be next for "The Dragon."

Winning is certainly paramount in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA), but fans and pundits alike almost immediately begin contemplating what could be next for those who take home victories inside the Octagon.

For Lyoto Machida, the answer of "what's next?" is seemingly clear after his 62 second obliteration of CB Dollaway last night (Dec. 20, 2014) in the main event of UFC Fight Night 58 (highlights here).

Just moments after adding yet another highlight reel finish to his resume, MMA fans and media were calling for the former light heavyweight champion to take on former Strikeforce middleweight champion and current No. 5 ranked contender Luke Rockhold.

Rockhold has shrugged off his awful UFC debut, one that saw him get knocked out by current No. 1 middleweight contender Vitor Belfort, by finishing three straight opponents in Costa Philippou, Tim Boetsch, and Michael Bisping.

Considering the pseudo-middleweight tournament at UFC 184 -- with Chris Weidman defending his title against Vitor Belfort and top contenders Jacare Souza and Yoel Romero squaring off -- Rockhold was watching Machida intently last evening, knowing that if "The Dragon" defeated Dollaway, he would likely be his next foe.

Once Machida finished off the job, Rockhold made his claim, and Dana White approved.

Will UFC be able to book the fight in time for UFC 184 to add to the middleweight madness? Or will the two top contenders share the spotlight in a UFC Fight Night main event? Either way, the middleweight division is looking as exciting as it has ever been.

After a riveting end to 2014 with the UFC Fight Night 58: "Machida vs Dollaway" event, MMAmania.com ponders what is next for the main card winners who picked up victories last Saturday (Dec. 20, 2014) on FOX Sports 1 inside Ginasio Jose Correa in Barueri, Brazil.

In the closing act for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 2014, fight fans were treated to an outstanding event in Brazil, as UFC Fight Night 58: "Machida vs Dollaway" delivered exciting action, and highlight-reel finishes throughout the 12-fight card.

In the main event, former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida added CB Dollaway to his highlight reel, finishing off "The Doberman" with a savage body kick that crumbled the former Arizona State wrestler just 62 seconds into the fight.

Check out the highlights here.

In the co-main event, former UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao closed out a rough year with a desperately needed finish over Mitch Gagnon (highlights here). Although Barao did not steamroll through Gagnon, nor look like the champion he once was, the victory was huge for his psyche and standing in the division.

With that quick recap of the night's marquee bouts, it is now time to play matchmaker with our "Next Matches To Make."

Winner: Daniel Sarafian

Who Should He Fight Next: Dan Miller

Although Daniel Sarafian was awarded the (technical) knockout victory after his friend Antonio Dos Santos injured his finger early on in the second, the Brazilian did not look all that good in the first round.

If Sarafian went on to lose last night's fight against Dos Santos, it would have been his third in a row, likely meaning the end of his UFC run. Luckily for Sarafian, the mixed martial arts (MMA) gods saw to it that his UFC career would not end in Barueri one way or another.

With that being said, I don't see any reason why UFC would not match Sarafian up with his originally scheduled opponent, Dan Miller. Unless Miller was severely injured while training for Sarafian, I don't see UFC going another route.

Winner: Erick Silva

Who Should He Fight Next: Ryan LaFlare

Is Erick Silva a gatekeeper? Probably, but who cares?

Silva continues to put on captivating performances, whether he is winning or not, so matching him up with anyone near the top 15 is a great booking in my opinion.

In his nine-fight UFC career, Silva has exchanged wins and losses, failing to ever put together either a winning or losing streak. His wins have come over mediocre competition in Luis Ramos, Charlie Brenneman, Jason High, Takenori Sato, and Mike Rhodes. His losses have come against high-ranked fighters in Matt Brown, Jon Fitch, and Dong Hyun Kim. Silva has also lost to Carlo Prater via disqualification, but was well on his way to winning that fight before the DQ.

It appears that Silva can not hang with the elite of the elite, and that truly may be the case, but his performances thus far have earned him the opportunity to prove he can be consistent in the future. A match up against undefeated No. 15 ranked Ryan LaFlare sounds like the perfect fight to me.

Winner: Rashid Magomedov

Who Should He Fight Next: Michael Johnson

Rashid Magomedov is obviously an exceptional fighter.

After earning his third straight UFC victory, and first UFC stoppage, over the previously undefeated Brazilian Elias Silverio, there is no doubt in my mind that Magomedov will be fighting someone in the top 15 next.

Although it would be a huge step up in competition, I believe a fight with Michael Johnson has fireworks written all over it. Magomedov showed off his precision counter-striking last evening over Silverio, but will he be able to overcome Johnson's footwork and tenacity?

That lightweight fight would not only be a great test for both men, but it could also unveil a new challenger in the stacked lightweight division in 2015.

Winner: Patrick Cummins

Who Should He Fight Next: Ovince St. Preux

It is time for Patrick Cummins to hit the UFC rankings.

UFC's light heavyweight division is one of the thinnest and top heavy divisions in the organization today, and that is painfully evident when you realize Vitor Belfort, Shogun Rua, and Rafael Cavalcante are all ranked.

Cummins has won three straight since his destruction at the hands of Daniel Cormier, and the former Penn State wrestler has earned a shot at a top 15 contender once again. Considering most fighters in the latter half of the division are coming off a loss, the best option for Cummins right now is No. 8 ranked Ovince St. Preux.

St. Preux is coming off his shocking knockout over Shogun Rua this past November, but before "OSP" can be considered a legitimate contender, he must prove that he can beat a wrestler. Cummins obviously excels in the wrestling department, so a fight between the two men could earn the 205-pound division a fresh contender.

Winner: Renan Barao

Who Should He Fight Next: Raphael Assuncao

Renan Barao got a much needed victory in Barueri last evening, but to be frank, the former champion did not look all that great against a very game Mitch Gagnon.

Whether it was Gagnon proving to be a much stiffer test than many expected, or whether TJ Dillashaw is still haunting Barao's nightmares, the former champion was nowhere near championship level last evening.

Barao was tagged repeatedly by Gagnon throughout the fight, and was timid early on before opening up in the later rounds. Even in his best exchanges of the fight, Barao never had the awe-inspiring moments we became accustomed to during his title run.

In the end, Barao's victory is what will be remembered, but there is no question Gagnon essentially gave up the finishing arm-triangle choke in the third round due to sheer exhaustion.

With that being said, Barao will need to fight once more before taking on either TJ Dillashaw or Dominick Cruz once those two settle the score in 2015, and the best option at this point is the streaking Raphael Assuncao.

Winner: Lyoto Machida

Who Should He Fight Next: Luke Rockhold

Lyoto Machida is a God among men, ladies and gentleman.

"The Dragon" added yet another impeccable highlight-reel performance to his already sensational MMA career last evening by taking out CB Dollaway.

In his 11-year MMA career, including seven years in UFC, Machida has one of the most impressive lists of victories in the history of the sport. The former light heavyweight champion has defeated Stephan Bonnar, Rich Franklin, BJ Penn, Tito Ortiz, Rashad Evans, Shogun Rua, Randy Couture, Ryan Bader, Dan Henderson, Mark Munoz, and Gegard Mousasi, in that order.

At 36 years old, Machida looks as good as ever, and there is no indication whatsoever that "The Dragon" will be hanging up his gloves anytime soon. Prior to getting another crack at Chris Weidman, however, Machida will need one more marquee victory against the former Strikeforce champion, Luke Rockhold.
