No one, including the referee.

That's according to Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) interim heavyweight titleholder Fabricio Werdum, who popped and dropped Mark Hunt with a flying knee to end their UFC 180 pay-per-view (PPV) main event in Mexico City (video replay here).

But it would have been over sooner, had the man in black heard the "Super Samoan" surrender (via Bloody Elbow):

"We went to the ground but he was very clever. He is very smart when he fights. He blocked my guard game in the cage. When we stood up, I tried twice to take him down and he defended very well. I trained a lot for this, I asked my master Rafael Cordeiro and he allowed me to use my double leg as a set up. Hunt knew that I would try to take him down, it was obvious. So I did the set up downstairs and then I hit him with a knee in his chin. It was hard because he is very intelligent, he knows how to move at the octagon and he's smart. I was able to hit him with the knee and after that happened a thing that no one saw was that he asked the referee for the end of the bout. When he was knocked down he said that it was enough and the referee didn't listen, so I had to hit him a few times more."

The official ruling was second-round technical knockout.

That came as a surprise to many fans and pundits, who expected Werdum to win their five-round contest by way of submission -- if he was going to win at all. Early in the fight, Hunt appeared to have "Vai Cavalo" all figured out, then BANG and it was all she wrote.

But his story is far from over.

Another action-packed weekend of fisticuffs has come and gone, as Bellator 131 (details), WSOF 15 (results) and UFC 180 (recap) all went down this past Saturday night (Nov. 15, 2014).

Of course, the highlight of the weekend was UFC 180, which took place in Mexico City, Mexico, and left plenty of fighters licking their wounds once the dust settled.

Among them was Dennis Bermudez, who saw his seven-fight winning streak go out the window after he tapped to Ricardo Lamas (see it). And Jake Ellenberger, who was also forced to say "uncle" by Kelvin Gastelum and his rear-naked choke (video).

But which fighter is suffering from the worst post-fight hangover, now a few days removed?

Mark Hunt.

Considered one of the best stories in all of combat sports, Hunt looked to tie a ribbon around his current run -- which included five wins in his last seven outings, with four brutal knockout victories over the likes of Roy Nelson and Stefan Struve -- by winning the interim heavyweight title.

Standing in his way was Fabricio Werdum, another man who looked to complete his own comeback story, by capturing his first-ever title after getting the boot from the promotion six years ago.

And though in a perfect world, both men would see their stories have fairy-tale endings, the hurt business is not pre-determined and only one man could walk away a champion. Unfortunately for Hunt, his run -- which began three years ago -- was the one that came to a screeching halt south of the border.

Early on, Hunt seemed to find success with his striking, flooring "Vai Cavalo" in the opening frame. Unlike Fedor Emelianenko, though, Mark didn't dive in for the kill, choosing to let Fabricio back to his feet.

Smart move.

Continuing his striking assault, Hunt looked very much in control throughout the first seven minutes of action and in the blink of an eye, Werdum ended the bout with a thunderous knee right to the kisser that was enough to put "Super Samoan" on his back and down for the count a few strikes later (video).

As devastating as the loss was for Hunt, he deserves all the credit in the world for taking such a high-profile fight on only three-weeks notice after Cain Velasquez was forced to withdraw.

And despite what Dana White tried to tell us all week long, just because Hunt had a fight two months ago, did not mean that his heavyweight body was ready to drop so much weight and be equipped to take part in a five-round fight in such a short period of time.

Of course, Hunt took the high road and never offered up any excuses, though one couldn't help but think "Super Samoan" had other pressing issues on his mind heading into his title fight, as evidenced by this conversation.

The good news is, Hunt is determined to keep going and has no plans to give up his championship dreams.

As well he should; because the man who wasn't even supposed to be fighting on the biggest mixed martial arts (MMA) stage of them all, came close to doing the unthinkable.

Did you think a silly little thing like a knockout loss to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 180 last Sat. night (Nov. 11, 2014) in Mexico City was going to boot Mark Hunt from the 265-pound title chase?

Pfffft ... as if.

While it was "Vai Cavalo" who took home the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) interim heavyweight title, there's no question Hunt -- ranked No. 4 in the top 10 of his weight class -- is likely just two or three big wins away from another crack at the crown.

From his post-fight comments (via FOX Sports):

"I feel like I was knocked out. My gas was starting to get to me. It was a good trick. He caught me. I got caught. I got a knee in my face. Congratulations to you Fabricio. In this division, if you get caught, you get caught. I'll be back. I'm still one of the best fighters in the world. I might have lost tonight and I'm one of the older guys, but I'm still keeping up."

Prior to eating a surprise knee (see it here), Hunt (10-9-1) was having his way with the Brazilian.

I wouldn't mind seeing a rematch against Alistair Overeem, assuming "The Reem" can win his fight against Stefan Struve next month on FOX.
Fabricio Werdum earned his UFC interim heavyweight title with a highlight-reel knockout against dangerous striker and fan-favorite Mark Hunt in the main event on UFC 180 this past Saturday night (Nov. 15, 2014). As "Vai Cavalo" embarks on his run as temporary UFC champion, MMAmania.com ponders what could be next for the Brazilian star.

Winning, and the ecstasy of victory, only lasts for mere moments in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA). Whether it is a legion of fans begging to know when their hero will return to the Octagon, or the promoter announcing the victors' next match up at the post-fight press conference, MMA fighters rarely have a chance to rest on their laurels.

For interim UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum, his satisfying knockout victory over Mark Hunt at UFC 180 this past Saturday (Nov. 15, 2014) will only grant him a short respite before the focus returns to UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.

Werdum was initially set to take on Velasquez at UFC 180 in Mexico, but an injury to the champion allowed fan-favorite Mark Hunt to get a crack at the interim belt against Werdum on short notice. "Vai Cavalo" had everything to lose in Mexico, but ultimately he pulled off the victory with one of the best knockouts of the year (highlights here).

Now that Werdum did his job in defeating Hunt, he will have to wait for Velasquez to get cleared by a doctor before unifying the titles. With the UFC heavyweight champion expecting to return in March, fight fans could look forward to seeing Werdum and Velasquez throw down in the main event of UFC 185 or 186 in 2015.

Of course, with Velasquez's spotty history of injuries, there is a viable chance that "Vai Cavalo" could be defending his interim title prior to his anticipated match up with Velasquez. In fact, Dana White noted that if Velasquez incurs another serious injury prior to a bout with Werdum, the UFC heavyweight champion could be stripped, making Werdum the undisputed titleholder.

If that is the case, then Werdum would likely take on the winner of the UFC on FOX 13 main event between former foe Junior Dos Santos and rising contender Stipe Miocic. Of course, if Dos Santos defeats Miocic, he would be looking to knockout Werdum once again in their rematch to become UFC champion for the second time.

At this point in time, Werdum must wait and see whether or not Velasquez can make the trek to the Octagon 100-percent healthy. If not, he can expect to become the undisputed champion, defending his belt against either Dos Santos or Miocic in early 2015.

Easy enough.

In the first round, Mark Hunt looked well on his way to defeating Fabricio Werdum to win the interim heavyweight championship in the main event of UFC 180 last night (Sat., Nov. 15, 2014) in Mexico City, Mexico. He scored a knockdown, a takedown, and was generally in control. His opponent, meanwhile, appeared "out of it."

He was knocked out in the second (watch highlights here).

UFC President Dana White explains why it was such a surprise:

"The only thing that surprised me about the fight was the walk from the dressing room to the Octagon, Werdum looked out of it. He looked lackadaisical, he looked really mellow. Even when the fight started, he looked really, I don't know, just sort of out of it. He gets dropped in the first round. Hunt, he stuffs takedowns, he gets that top position and Werdum isn't pulling off any submissions, he's doing some damage to him. Then in the second round he comes out and lands the most beautiful flying knee. You don't see heavyweights do that. You don't see heavyweights land beautiful flying knees like that. He ends up looking awesome."

This sets up a title unification match pitting Werdum against the recovering Cain Velasquez, who White expects can be back by March of next year. And for all Hunt's power and ability to end a fight in the blink of an eye, Velasquez is the last man on Earth you want to be "lackadaisical" with.

Last night (Sat., Nov. 15, 2014), Fabricio Werdum and Mark Hunt competed for the interim heavyweight title at UFC 180 inside Arena Ciudad de Mexico in Mexico City, Mexico. After getting worked for the first round and much of the second, Werdum pulled off a shocking knockout. Find out how below!

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight contenders Fabricio Werdum and Mark Hunt collided in a striker vs. grappler battle for the interim strap last night (Nov. 15, 2014) at UFC 180 inside Arena Ciudad de Mexico in Mexico City, Mexico.

Since re-entering UFC, Werdum put on four excellent performances against some quality opposition. Though he earned his shot against Cain Velasquez, the Brazilian was paired off with Hunt for the interim title after "Brown Pride" fell to another injury.

Hunt attempted to continue his Cinderella story last night. The former K-1 Grand Prix champion may not have built up a lengthy win streak prior to his interim title shot, but Hunt still had plenty of momentum and fan support behind him.

Hunt put up a hell of a fight, but it just wasn't enough.

To watch complete Fabricio Werdum vs. Mark Hunt full fight video highlights from UFC 180's main event click here.

Werdum opened with a nice leg kick and Hunt returned the favor not long after. Hunt then exploded into an overhand, which sent Werdum to the mat. Of course, it's hard to tell when Werdum is actually hurt, as the Brazilian stood back up without issue.

When Hunt jumped into a combination, Werdum pushed forward and bounced off Hunt, falling into his guard. Hunt fell with him, and Werdum locked his guard up before Hunt could move out. About a minute later, Hunt manages to get back to his feet without getting put in much danger.

Hunt landed a nice uppercut from within the clinch. Hunt momentarily pushed for a takedown near the end of the round but gives up on it.

For the first time on the main card, the fight moved into the second round, and Hunt clearly was in the lead.

Werdum was hesitant to begin the second round. Hunt landed a hard right hand, and Werdum willingly fell to his back. Back on his feet, Werdum whiffs on a pair of head kicks.

Suddenly, Werdum steps into a spearing knee that drops Hunt to the mat.

"Vai Cavalo" pounced on his hurt opponent with a series of hammer fists and right hands. Though Hunt seemed to remain conscious, he absorbed a large number of punches and didn't move very much, causing Herb Dean to call the bout.

Werdum has always been an opportunistic finisher on the mat, and it seems that his potency now extends to his striking as well. Werdum was taking a beating on his feet but remained calm and waited for his opportunity.

Werdum's nasty guard helped keep him safe in this bout as well. Whenever Hunt had a solid connection, Werdum could sit down and make Hunt hesitant to pursue the finish. It's so difficult to tell when Werdum is truly hurt by punches, and guessing wrong can lead to giving Werdum time to recover or falling into a submission.

There's no doubt as to Werdum's next bout. The unification bout between him and Velasquez should be highly entertaining, and hopefully it takes place in either Mexico or Brazil as Werdum requested.

On a side note, listening to Werdum deliver his post-fight speech in three languages was certainly interesting.

Hunt put on a hell of a performance despite the short notice. He was utterly dominant in the first round and Hunt's wrestling was incredible. Each time Werdum attempted to grapple, he simply bounced off the "Super Samoan."

Unfortunately, the dual pronged threat of Werdum's vicious submissions and dangerous striking eventually overcame Hunt's defense. Hunt was so focused on repelling the takedown and countering that Werdum's knee shot through his guard.

Though he lost, this performance honestly made me more interested in an eventual bout with Velasquez. If the champion can retain his title, a match up with Hunt would definitely be intriguing.

At UFC 180, Fabricio Werdum put on a gutsy performance to win the interim title against Mark Hunt. Can he defeat Cain Velasquez and unify the titles?

Mo money, mo problems...

UFC 180: "Werdum vs. Hunt" from Mexico City, Mexico has officially wrapped, which means it's time for those select fighters who went above and beyond in their respective fights to get a little extra grease for their efforts.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) dished out its standard post-fight monetary bonuses to four of the 22 fighters on the card, and it's probably no surprise who's heading home with a second sack of simoleons.

This time around, Fabricio Werdum and Kelvin Gastelum were given "Performance of the Night" bonuses for their knockout and submission victories over Mark Hunt and Jake Ellenberger, respectively.

The "Fight of the Night" award went to the back-and-forth war of attrition between Henry Briones and Guido Cannetti that saw the former score a second round rear-naked choke submission victory over the latter.

Here are the special UFC 180 bonuses:

Performance of the Night -- Fabricio Werdum

Performance of the Night -- Kelvin Gastelum

Fight of the Night -- Henry Briones vs. Guido Cannetti

Again, each fighter received $50,000 extra for their performances in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as that information becomes available.

In case you missed it live.

Fabricio Werdum is your new (interim) heavyweight champion after knocking out Mark Hunt in the second round of their main event showcase at last night's (Sat., Nov. 15, 2014) UFC 180 pay-per-view (PPV) at Mexico City Arena in Mexico City, Mexico. Yes, you read that right. Werdum, one of the very best submission specialists in the history of mixed martial arts, used a hard knee and a follow up onslaught of punches to TKO Hunt, a hard-headed, hard hitting brawler known for ruthless knockouts of his own. It was, perhaps, a fitting end to an improbable run for the former PRIDE heavyweight who was once thought to be a shot fighter with no future inside the Octagon. If nothing else, it was really fun while it lasted and Werdum, despite playing the role of spoiler, continues to make a somewhat improbable rise through the ranks of his own. Heavyweight MMA is fun!
