With the score tied one apiece, bitter enemies Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier will complete their trilogy in the UFC 264 pay-per-view (PPV) main event, a lightweight battle that ends a rivalry first started on the UFC 178 fight card way back in Sept. 2014.

That’s where McGregor drew first blood, courtesy of a first-round technical knockout. Poirier would later avenge that loss as one half of the UFC 257 headliner last January, leading to their July 10 rubber match inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dustin Poirier punched his way back into the lightweight title picture with a commanding performance against Dan Hooker in last month’s “Fight of the Night” affair on ESPN, catapulting himself into the No. 2 spot behind Justin Gaethje.

With “The Highlight” next in line to battle reigning 155-pound champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 253, Poirier will have to weigh his options moving forward. But it sounds like “The Diamond” isn’t ready to close the book on his “Eagle” rivalry just yet.

His loss to McGregor, however, is ancient history.

“If the belts weren’t on the line, just for my legacy, I would love to beat Khabib,” Poirier told MMA Junkie. “Nobody’s ever beat him. Nobody’s ever climbed that mountain. I would love to be the first one. That’s historic. That’s legendary. That’s the stuff I’m out to do. I’m not out for rematches and grudge matches and revenge. I’m a grown man, I don’t hold that stuff in my heart. I have a family and this is a business to me.”

Poirier (26-6, 1 NC) was stopped by McGregor (22-4) at the UFC 178 pay-per-view (PPV) event roughly six years back when both combatants were rising up the featherweight ranks. “The Diamond” eventually moved up to lightweight — as did “Notorious” — and put together a sensational 10-2 record with six nasty finishes.

The second of those two losses came to Nurmagomedov (28-0) at UFC 242.

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight champion, Conor McGregor, is ranked No. 3 at 155 pounds, which could be viewed as charitable considering “Notorious” is just 1-1 in the division with his only win coming over the since-departed Eddie Alvarez back in late 2016.

Regardless, McGregor slammed the rankings panel for its “weird little game” and took exception to his spot behind Dustin Poirier (No. 2). The power-punching Irishman scratched “The Diamond” when they competed at featherweight roughly six years back.

“How is the pea ahead of me in rankings? I sparked him in 90 seconds,” McGregor wrote in a recently deleted tweet. “Went further against most recent foe, plus took a round. After two year layoff partying and or in jail/court. What a weird little game you guys play. I’ll bide my time for now but watch this space. All bums.”

McGregor often refers to Poirier as “Pea Head.”

“Because I’ve been fighting real contenders and you’ve been hand-picking opponents,” Poirier fired back.

Both fighters were taken out by reigning UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, but McGregor seems to want credit for lasting longer than Poirier, despite getting finished in equally violent fashion at UFC 229.

There’s been some talk over the last few years about a McGregor-Poirier rematch at 155 pounds, mostly from “The Diamond,” but considering how well “Notorious” has fared at welterweight, it’s hard to say where he ends up later this year.

UFC 178 is in the books and payouts and salaries are in the checkbooks. Here's a complete list of last Saturday night's (Sept. 27, 2014) earnings for all the fighters competing at the "Johnson vs. Cariaso" pay-per-view (PPV) event in Las Vegas, Nevada.

UFC 178 fighter payouts for those athletes competing at the "Johnson vs. Cariaso" pay-per-view (PPV) event last weekend (Sat., Sept. 27, 2014) from inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, were released earlier today by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).

Not surprisingly, UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson was the top earner of the night, raking in $183,000 for his second-round drubbing of Chris Cariaso in the headlining affair (replay). Not far behind him was Irish sensation Conor McGregor, who cashed in $150,000 for dispatching Dustin Poirier (highlights).

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight phenomenon Conor McGregor was asked to give his thoughts on top division contender Chad Mendes, who fights Jose Aldo at UFC 179 on Oct. 25 in Brazil for "Junior's" championship title.

"Notorious" told the media he's not impressed by the "small bodybuilder stuck in the 145-pound division" because "he gets tired quick."

While there is no denying Mendes is jacked, he's also been winning fights. Five in a row, to be exact, with four finishes by way of knockout/technical knockout. That's probably why "Money" (via MMA Fighting) offered McGregor a chance to "witness excellence" from the third row:

"Conor can get on a plane to Brazil, go to his 3rd row seat, grab a bowl of lucky charms and witness excellence."

McGregor is expected to be in attendance ... but will he fight the winner?

The flamboyant Irishman is fresh off a first-round finish of Dustin Poirier at last weekend's (Sept. 27) UFC 178 pay-per-view (PPV) event in Las Vegas, Nevada (highlights), in what was his fourth win in as many tries since joining the world's largest mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion in early 2013. We know how good he is on his feet ... but how about off his back?

Fighting Mendes would be a good way to find out.

Let's wrap up all the action from UFC 178 this past weekend, shall we?

UFC 178: "'Johnson vs. Cariaso" blew the roof off the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sat., Sept. 27, 2014, with an unusual pay-per-view (PPV) offering rich with stories you either need to get up to date on or go back and revisit.

So let's.

Not just saying, but doing

Conor McGregor was already on his way to being the next big star in MMA and he blew the doors wide open here by finishing off Dustin Poirier in the very first round of their featherweight showcase both did a great job hyping as a huge deal.

It was just over a year ago when Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White compared featherweight prospect Conor McGregor to former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, prompting most of the mixed martial arts (MMA) media to snicker behind the safety of their laptops.

Present company included!

Well, no one is laughing now, as the "numbers" behind the UFC 178 pay-per-view (PPV) event, which took place last Sat. night (Sept. 27, 2014) inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, were big enough to convince White that McGregor is the new "it" guy.

"He's a legit force, bigger than I've ever seen," White told Ariel Helwani after the fight. "Bigger than Brock Lesnar. Let's just say we're way over budget. The numbers, we attributed it to Conor."

White also confirmed that McGregor was bigger than "king" Georges St. Pierre.

McGregor (16-2) is now 4-0 -- with three finishes -- since joining the promotion in April 2013. That includes last Saturday night's drubbing of No. 5-ranked featherweight contender Dustin Poirier, who crumbled under the Irish onslaught in just under two minutes (replay here).

"Notorious" is big, no question, but the biggest around? Headline-grabbing champion (and former Brock-killer) Ronda Rousey might have something to say about that.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight phenomenon Conor McGregor capitalized on his popularity by holding a special post-fight media scrum following the UFC 178: "Johnson vs. Cariaso" pay-per-view (PPV) event last Sat. night (Sept. 27, 2014) in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he starched Dustin Poirier to get his name into the 145-pound title hunt (watch the highlights here). "Notorious" talked about his performance against "The Diamond," the injury that nearly knocked him from the "Sin City" event, who he wants to fight next, and so much more.
