Nyuck, Nyuck, Nyuck!

"He’s a very calm, relaxed and methodical fighter. And because of that, I’m sorry to say, ‘Yes,’ he is a dirty fighter. Maybe when he was looking down and then pushing the fingers in the eyes, maybe that happened, I didn’t check that out. But, he knows exactly what he is doing at any given time. And his fingers were definitely in his face … and for a long time. He was constantly rubbing him in the face. So, yeah, I’m sorry, I’d have to say, ‘Yes.’"

-- Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight champion -- and current host on AXS TV's "Inside MMA" program -- Bas Rutten weighs in on the recent eye-poke controversy that has enveloped dominant 205-pound champion, Jon Jones. Rutten feels that the dynamic and intelligent young champion knows exactly what he is doing inside the Octagon, pawing at recent opponents such as Glover Teixeira and Alexander Gustafsson to keep them at bay with his incredible reach ...and long fingers. Referees have warned Jones about his dangerous digits, but have yet to deduct points that could have been difference makers, especially in the close decision win over "The Mauler." Company President Dana White has even come out and declared that "something must be done" to curtail the technique, while Jones responded in typical Jones fashion, taking to social media to mock critics with a video of him crying like a baby ... and then trying to delete the evidence unsuccessfully. Is Jones pushing the limits of what is considered illegal -- or dirty -- inside the cage or is this all much ado about nothing?

Jon Jones seemingly can't stop -- and won't stop -- trolling his critics on social media.

For better -- and seemingly worse -- Jon Jones' Instagram account continues to make waves. And after his unanimous decision win over Glover Teixeira at UFC 172, it's reaching tidal proportions.

First, he claimed his phone was hacked when there was a tirade of homophobic slurs aimed at a Swedish man who insulted him last week. Jones later confirmed that a member of his social media team made the mistake and was fired shortly therafter.

More recently, "Bones" recorded a clip of himself watching Phil Davis' performance against Anthony Johnson, in which he aimed the camera to his television and then to his face, showing sarcasm when it came to "Mr. Wonderful" eating crow. Chuck Liddell, too, was a post-fight target because "Iceman" unsuccessfully predicted Teixeira would finish "Bones" in Baltimore.

Now, he's at it again, but this time, he's defending himself.

In a post-fight interview with Ariel Helwani directly after UFC 172, company president Dana White was asked about Jones' eye pokes. The champion would use his reach and lean in with his lead arm, putting his entire hand in his opponent's face. In doing so, it allowed Jones' fingers to smear through the eyes on several occasions.

White wasn't too please with the rangy technique:

"We've got to stop that stuff. The openings of the hands and putting the hands on the face are something bad, but it happens with guys who have reach. They do that a lot."

Throughout his fight against Teixeira (watch highlights here), "Bones" repeatedly poked the challenger in the eyes. In fact, he received a warning from referee Dan Miragliotta because the bout had to be paused twice for several seconds.

Jones, however, wasn't deducted any points for the seemingly inadvertent eye pokes.

Nonetheless, the champion has heard the latest criticism and, unsurprisingly, took to his Instagram account to clown his haters. And he responded to the eye poke jabs with a video of him pretending to be a crying fan, calling himself "the dirtiest fighter in MMA."

The video has since been deleted from Jones' Instagram account, but it lives on thanks to a heads up YouTube member, making it impossible to deny the authenticity.

Sooooo ... about that "Jones vs. Teixeira" event last night ...

Last night (Sat., April 26, 2014), Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) hit Baltimore Arena in Baltimore, Md., with UFC 172: "Jones vs. Teixeira." The pay-per-view (PPV) was hyped by UFC President Dana White as one of the deepest in the promotion's history (seriously ... I think).

The mixed martial arts (MMA) card was headlined with a title fight between Jon Jones and Glover Teixeira for Jones' Light Heavyweight championship. Jones was dominant in his victory and set a record with seven straight 205-pound title defenses.

The co-main event featured the return of Anthony "Rumble" Johnson, who was released from the promotion after failing to make weight at UFC 142 against Vitor Belfort. "Rumble" was successful in his return, taking a unanimous decision over Phil Davis.

UFC 172 ended up being extremely entertaining, with several early candidates for "Knockout of the Year" considerations. So without any further ado, let's talk about last night ...

Can anyone beat Jon Jones?

The main event bout between Jones and Teixeira didn't have the feel of a championship fight. It seemed like Jones went out there and wanted to make a statement that Teixeira didn't belong to share the cage with him. For five rounds, he picked apart the Brazilian with surgical precision (watch highlights here).

Mind you, the narrative for the past few years has been that Teixeira possesses the skills to be the man who could finally defeat Jones. He hits hard and is a legitimate world class grappler on the mat. None of that mattered because he had absolutely nothing for Jones.

If there was one negative to take away, it's that Jones was unable to put away Teixeira. He was so thoroughly outclassed that a finish would have really put a stamp on the night. But, that's just being a stickler and not an actual criticism.

And while it was easy to appreciate what Jones was doing last night, it just fell kind of flat in my eyes. It was a one sided beating. Or as Omar Little from "The Wire" once said, "you come at the king, you best not miss."

So why didn't we get Jones vs. Gustafsson 2?

I'll be the first to admit that I usually hate rematches. Or more specifically, I hate rematches when the first bout was an absolute classic. In my mind, there's just no way for the second bout to live up to the first. Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar's first fight was incredible. Their second? Not so much.

But, last night made one thing clear: The only person who can truly challenge Jon Jones is Alexander Gustafsson.

Outside of an accidental broken toe against Chael Sonnen at UFC 159, the only real time that Jones was in danger of losing his UFC Light Heavyweight title was when he faced "The Mauler" at UFC 165 in Sept. 2013. A champion needs to be constantly tested and the stiffest test in the division is most definitely the Swede.

The rivals are expected to rematch later this year. Here's hoping for another classic fight.

"Rumble" young man, rumble ...

Friday night, my buddy asked me if there were any underdogs on the card worth making a play on. The first person who came to mind was Anthony "Rumble" Johnson. The former Welterweight looked scary in his three fights in World Series of Fighting (WSOF) and possesses the skills to be a contender at Light Heavyweight.

That gut feeling turned out to be correct as Johnson made Phil Davis look like an amateur for 15 minutes. At no point was the bout competitive. Johnson was just the better all-around fighter. It was actually pretty remarkable all things considered (watch highlights here).

With how much trash Davis was talking during fight week, it was nice to see Johnson put in the work to walk away victorious. He's still relatively young and will definitely be in the title picture if he can pick up another big win or two in the near future.

Additional Thoughts

While I commend Teixeira's heart, I have to question the match up. Even before the two fighters met inside the Octagon, I doubted Teixeira's legitimacy as a challenger. His most impressive win in UFC was over Ryan Bader. I get that the promotion needs to make fights, but this just felt rushed.

There has got to be some serious re-evaluation going on inside Davis' head right now. He talked a huge game during the week leading up to the fight. Unfortunately, he couldn't deliver on any of those promises. No idea where he goes from here.

So Tim Boetsch fought last night. I can't remember him doing anything besides getting tapped out to an inverted triangle kimura.

It may be time to pump the breaks on the Andre Fili hype train. He's very talented and a great prospect, but the loss last night brings up a lot questions. Yes, it was Max Holloway's best fight, but Fili is the guy everyone talks about. You have to deliver in that position.

Joseph Benavidez did well to rebound after getting dominated in the first few minutes of the fight. He forced Tim Elliot tap out with his feet. He's in a weird position now in the Flyweight division. He's the guy you have to beat if you hope for a title shot. Unfortunately for him, unless Demetrious Johnson loses, he won't sniff another chance at fighting for the belt.

Hats off to Isaac Vallie-Flagg. It sucks to lose, but he pushed forward the entire "Fight of the Night" against Takanori Gomi, demonstrating an immensely large amount of heart. No way he gets cut.

So we're done with the Four Horsewomen thing, right, thanks to Bethe Correia's win over Jessamyn Duke? Probably not. Then again, even Paul Roma was a Horseman at one time.

Danny Castillo and Chris Beal scored two savage knockouts that will be in consideration for best of the year. I'm not sure which I enjoyed more. But, I know that I enjoyed them.

"Glover Teixeira, to the hardcore fans, they know how tough he is. I definitely feel as if this gets me back on that wave of domination. I’m happy to have all that back…. It was great to have the crowd back on my side again. It’s been a long time since I had cheers. And I figured it would be that way, so I said, ‘let me really embrace this, let me really give this audience some entertainment.’ It was just great — I was living it up. I figured Ray Lewis would be there and a lot of other Ravens would be there, so I was just playing it up. I practiced that dance all day today. I aced it, I hear, but I haven’t seen it yet. Ray was happy. I’m happy."

-- Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones had a good time last night (Sat., April 26, 2014), beginning with his Ray Lewis-inspired dance as he walked to the Octagon to fight Glover Teixeira in the main event of UFC 172. Lewis -- who played nearly 20 years as a linebacker for the Ravens of the NFL -- was sitting ringside at Baltimore Arena in Baltimore, Md., no doubt a fan of the "Bones" tribute. His signature celebration was a staple of the team's entrance on the field, one that he dubbed the "Squirrel Dance." Jones appeared to nail the routine, as well as Teixeira for five rounds en route to a dominant unanimous decision win (watch full fight video highlights here). Jones, who has struggled to win over fans in recent years because of his personality, thinks he might have added a few to his club, according to his personal review at the UFC 172 post-fight press conference (watch full video replay here).
The next light heavyweight title fight is set and the champ is already firing shots.

When Alexander Gustafsson became the first man to give Jon Jones a serious challenge for his light heavyweight title back at UFC 165 on Sept. 21, 2013, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, it was clear the two would need to run it back in a rematch.

Not immediately, of course. No, the two would each have to clear a hurdle first.

Gustafsson did as much when he stopped Jimi Manuwa at UFC Fight Night 37 back on March 8 in London. As for Jones, well, he battered and bruised Glover Teixeira en route to a decision victory (watch highlights here) at last night's (April 26) UFC 172 pay-per-view (PPV) in Baltimore.

That paved the way for the rematch and, according to UFC President Dana White at the post-fight press conference, that's exactly what we're getting.

"Gustafsson gets the next fight against Jones. We gotta see how that plays out. I don't know, physically, how Jones is right now."

White would later say the rematch may take place in a big stadium in Sweden, which would be Gustafsson's backyard.

"Sometimes you've got to do what you've got to do. We don't ever have people say, ‘This is where I'm going to fight my fight.' It's never happened. It won't happen. We've got to take the fight wherever the fight is going to do the best. ... This thing could do 50 or 60,000 seats or more. If we go to Europe to do it, we will (do the rematch in a stadium in Sweden)."

Surely that will please "The Mauler", who has been open in his criticism of Jones, outright stating he believes the champion is ducking him.

He's gotten under "Bones'" skin so much, in fact, that any questions pertaining to this fight were brushed aside condescendingly:

"I don't really want to talk about... uh... I don't want to talk about that kid at all. I'm not going to talk about him at all. No, man, I'm having a good time. I just won a fight. ... I'm not going to talk about what's going on next right now."

This is going to be a lot of fun.

After a close decision win over Alexander Gustafsson, Jon Jones had a lot to prove heading into his UFC 172 main event against Glover Teixeira last night (Sat., April 26, 2014) from Baltimore, Maryland. "Bones" stepped up to the plate and delivered one of his best performances, defeating Teixeira with a surgically precise strategy. Check out our breakdown of his record-extending title defense below!

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion Jon Jones made his awaited return to the Octagon in the main event of UFC 172 last night (Sat. April 26, 2014) from Baltimore Arena in Baltimore, Maryland.

"Bones" was on the hunt for his record-setting seventh consecutive title defense, but his aura of invincibility had been ripped away during his classic UFC 165 tilt against Alexander Gustafsson, a fight after which many felt the champ was lucky to hold onto the belt.

Instead of instantly rematching "Mauler," Jones decided to instead give the shot to Teixeira, the Brazilian slugger who had won his last 20 mixed martial arts (MMA) bouts, including all five since his Octagon debut in May 2012.

Last seen knocking out Ryan Bader with a come-from-behind performance at UFC Fight Night 28, Teixeira had by far his biggest-ever challenge in the world's No. 1-ranked pound-for-pound fighter.

It turned out to be a one-sided affair, as "Bones" showed reminded us why he's quickly becoming one of the best fighters to ever set foot in the Octagon.

Tensions were high as the championship fight kicked off. Teixeira ate a body kick but threw some hard punches. Jones scored a good knee from the clinch and shot for a takedown that was unsuccessful. Teixeira cracked a right hand and grabbed a Jones kick to clinch. Jones ate a big right, and then a left, following with a hard body kick. Teixeira missed on a single leg and Jones snapped a high kick that utilized his insane range.

Action was briefly halted as Teixeira unleashed a flurry, but Jones weathered to work his jab and a left hook. Jones grabbed a Teixeira kick and tripped him to the mat, but the fight immediately returned to the feet. Teixeira threw some glancing hooks and Jones landed a straight right. "Bones" landed a big spinning back kick to the body, and Teixeira swung wild with a flurry that missed. The exciting first round came to a close with Jones surprising Teixeira with an axe kick.

Teixeira stuffed a takedown to start the second, and Jones continued to land some sharp kicks. Jones threw his left hand, always staying just out of Teixeira's power range. He threw another axe kick and a jumping push kick. Jones landed one of his trademark elbows that may have had Teixeira hurt, but Jones received a warning for poking the eye.

The restart saw Jones throw another spinning kick, and Teixeira finally landed some of his punches with a body shot and a hook. Jones fought back a good kick and more elbows, but Teixeira went to work with a big body shot. Jones blasted Teixeira with a brutal series of elbows and a left hook. More oblique and spinning kicks followed from "Bones," and the round came to a close with Jones narrowly missing on a massive wheel kick.

The fighters exchanged to start the third. Jones sought some knees from a tie-up, but Teixeira threw some hard shots that barely missed. Jones landed a big uppercut that knocked out Teixeira's mouthpiece, looking for a double leg takedown. A clinch along the cage saw some big uppercuts from Teixeira that had Jones hurt a bit, but the champion responded with elbows and punches from the clinch. Teixeira was bloodied, eating a huge left hook off a break. "Bones" snapped a kick to the body, and then some body punches and uppercuts to finish the round strong.

Jones took Teixeira into uncharted territory in the fourth. The champ kept the challenger consistently at range, landing a good straight and an elbow. "Bones" missed with a big spinning backfist and avoided a takedown attempt. He landed more elbows up against the cage wall. Jones continued to pick apart Teixeira as was expected, landing his body and inside leg kicks seemingly at will.

Elbows and an uppercut landed, and Teixeira's power seemed to be sapping. Jones' patented spinning back elbow came, and Teixeira's face was in bad shape. Jones began teeing off with a barrage of Muay Thai strikes, landing countless body shots, elbows, and a knee before securing a takedown as the fourth round wound down.

Jones got a takedown to start the first, transitioning to a clinch to land another spinning elbow. Teixeira landed an uppercut, but Jones responded with more body shots and a war erupted to loud cheers from the crowd. The fans booed when Teixeira's mouthpiece fell out one more time. Teixeira cracked Jones with a good right hand and another, but Jones taunted him to unleash more strikes. Jones looked at the clock from a clinch, scoring more elbows on a wobbled Teixeira. The final minute saw Jones miss on a spinning elbow and a wheel kick, throwing his hands in the air as a clear-cut unanimous decision was sealed for the champion.

Jones is now headed for his long-awaited rematch with Gustafsson, a fight that "Mauler" earned by defeating Jimi Manuwa at UFC Fight Night 37 back in March. Many feel that Gustafsson is the man to take Jones' belt, but the champion silenced his detractors in Baltimore tonight, earning the record for most wins in UFC light heavyweight history with 14.

Teixeira showed the heart of a lion, but he just couldn't get inside the range of Jones, nor deal with the diverse Muay Thai strikes of the champ. After the fight, he said that he may have injured his shoulder and broken his rib, giving credit to Jones for taking his best shots.

If he can return in a timely fashion, Teixeira would provide a great test for the surging Anthony Johnson. More than likely, he'll face a lengthy medical suspension as he recovers from only the third loss of his career, but the hard-nosed brawler will undoubtedly bounce back strong.

Jon Jones proved his critics wrong with a thoroughly dominant win over a tough challenger in Glover Teixeira. Will ‘Bones' hand ‘Mauler' a second loss when they meet in the next UFC 205-pound title bout?
