Bryan Caraway calls "BS" on throwing an elbow to the back of Cat Zingano's head at TUF 17 Finale, as well as clarifies comments he made about his disdain for marijuana following Pat Healy's failed UFC 159 drug test.

It's been an interesting week for Bryan Caraway to say the least.

If getting called a "fag" by Nate Diaz, the outspoken former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight No. 1 title contender, wasn't enough, Cat Zingano recently revealed to Bloody Elbow that Caraway intentionally elbowed her in the back of her head at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 17 Finale weigh-ins last month.

According to the camp of the current No. 1 women's Bantamweight contender, Caraway -- who dates former Strikeforce champion Miesha Tate -- took the chance to give Zingano a good shot to the dome as he passed by the chair in which she was sitting the day before she was set to step into the Octagon to face "Cupcake."

Josh Ford, Zingano's nutrionist, had a firsthand view of the incident:

"I think it was a real bullshit move on his part. We're backstage and all the fighters are there. We're kinda tight on space because we were basically in the back where some magician does his shows. There is like two rows of chairs lined up and then a table where everyone is filling out their medicals. Cat and I are sitting in the front row and a couple guys from Gabriel Gonzaga's camp are on the other side of us. We're talking and I'm looking straight at Cat when I see this body coming down the row behind her. I didn't notice it was Caraway but there's plenty of room to walk by. As he gets closer to our chairs he flares his elbow out and pops Cat right in the back of the head. The first thing on my mind was, 'that guy just elbowed her in the head!' As I'm turning around to see who it was Cat says the same thing. I turn my head to look and it's Caraway! And then one of the other fighters, might have been Uriah Hall, sitting there says, 'hey! I think that guy just elbowed you in the head!' So it was kind of a big deal. Cat, being who she is, gets up and starts pacing back and forth. At first, my protective coaching instincts kick in and I want to go over and say something to him but we're backstage, it's the UFC. I wasn't going to go try to make a big scene. I just thought it was crazy he would take a shot at her. I don't know what the deal was. [Caraway and Tate] were both being real weird in the back. They're basically inseparable."

According to Caraway, the story is a bunch of "BS" and posed the question on his Facebook page (via Bloody Elbow) about the reason it took so long or Zingano and Co. to divulge details of an alleged incident that happened more than one month ago.

His response:

"This is a joke and a feeble attempt to jump on the bandwagon and get a little publicity. It's sad that someone would stoop so low. I know if someone elbowed Miesha I would say something about it right then not when conveniently there's a ton of media involved. Total lies and BS."

Caraway also clarified any comments (read them here) that he made about Pat Healy's positive drug test that may have been misinterpreted:

"It was a poor choice of words I got ahead of myself. I meant you have no tolerance for people who smoke weed knowing its illegal or banned and get in trouble for it. I have plenty of friends who smoke and they are great people. I personally just choose not to use it. Pat Healy is actually my bro and I felt bad because I didn't mean it that way. Sometimes I'm a knuckle head."

As far as the recent onslaught of hate coming his way, Caraway seems to be taking it in stride, saying eventually people will realize he is a good person. In addition, he reveals that despite all the brouhaha, taking a short notice fight at UFC 159, which took place at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., on April 27, 2013, was one of the best decisions he ever made.

"It was the best five-day decision I've ever made. There's going to be haters in this sport, but I know I'm a genuinely good person, and I know that's eventually going to shine through. People are going to start seeing my character and that I'm a tough dude. It does feel good to get recognition. It's welcoming."

Zingano went on to defeat Tate via third round knockout and earned herself a shot at the UFC women's 135-pound title and a coaching slot on TUF 18 opposite Ronda Rousey. And even though Caraway pocketed a retroactive $65,000 "Submission of the Night" bonus, it's possible that Zingano got the last laugh.

If, of course, the drama is over, which is a long shot at this rate.

Pat Healy earned $130,000 less than one month ago in fight night bonuses for submitting Jim Miller, but all the money in the world might not make up for a huge marijuana mistake.

The biggest win in the mixed martial arts (MMA) career of Pat Healy is seemingly up in smoke.

"Bam Bam" today issued a formal statement through Jason House, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Iridium Sports Agency, revealing that he tested positive for marijuana after his "Fight of the Night"-winning performance against Jim Miller at UFC 159, which took place at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., on April 27, 2013.

His full statement:

"I would like to start off by apologizing to the UFC, Jim Miller, the MMA community, it's fans, my family, teammates and coaches for my positive testing for marijuana after my UFC 159 fight with Jim Miller. I was fully aware of the UFC and State Commissions drug policies and made poor life choices. I stand behind the UFC and the State Commission's disciplinary actions. I support efforts to make MMA and sports a clean, safe and fair place to compete. First and foremost, I would like to acknowledge and take responsibility for my mistake. I made a very poor choice to socially use marijuana and now I must face the consequences of that choice. I can assure you that I will do everything the UFC and State Commission asks of me and beyond. I will also make a conscious effort to be a better role model within the MMA community."

Neither Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) nor New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, which would be responsible for fines, suspensions and possibly overturning his first victory inside the Octagon to a "No Contest," have provided any additional information about Healy's failed test and possible ramifications.

However, at a minimum, it would appear that Healy would be facing a six-month suspension from mixed martial arts (MMA) competition and possibly ordered to complete an approved drug rehabilitation program. It's quite certain that his win over Miller will also be ruled a "No Contest," which would be a big blow to the Strikeforce import who -- against all odds -- earned the respect of fight fans for his gritty underdog performances.

Healy even cracked the Top 10-ranked list of Lightweight fighters after his come-from-behind submission win over Miller, coming in at No. 9 and, subsequently, calling for a Top 5-ranked opponent in his next outing.

Those plans could now all change because of a admittedly "poor choice."

With more than one week since The Chael Sonnen Show at UFC 159 exited stage left, abruptly, thanks to Jon Jones, Cory Braiterman takes a look back at the star-crossed mixed martial arts (MMA) career of the self-proclaimed "American Gangster."

Since today is a day that ends in "y," Chael Sonnen has said something yesterday that contradicted what he said the day before.

While he isn't retiring (for now), I was fortunate enough to be able to watch his latest high-profile mixed martial arts (MMA) bout from a mere four rows away more than one week ago (Sat., April 27, 2013) at UFC 159, which took place at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., a first round drubbing courtesy of the supremely talented -- and 9.5-toed -- Light Heavyweight Champion, Jon Jones.

The dust has settled and fight fans have more than likely already shifted their focuses to the next event, UFC on FX 8, one that actually features a meaningful Middleweight main event between Vitor Belfort vs. Luke Rockhold. But, before the latest promotional push kicks into overdrive, I would like to take this opportunity to look back on one of the more celebrated and controversial career ascents in the history of this young sport.

That's because Sonnen's Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) career is one of many levels and nuances.

Fifty years from now, people might look back on his record and compare him -- not unfairly -- to the Buffalo Bills of the NFL back in the 1990s. The perennial also-ran has never managed to grasp a major title belt (sorry, I don't count Gladiator Challenge and Dangerzone as major) thanks to the weighty issues of the bizarre Paulo Filho and his epic last-minute collapse against Anderson Silva back at UFC 117 back in Aug. 2010.

Always the groomsman, never the groom.

Regardless, Sonnen made his indelible MMA mark the past three years of his career, which is when he started talking as often as he would attempt a takedown. Specifically, the past nine months have really changed the way many fight fans seem to look at him. While most folks weren't terribly thrilled with his mouth/promo cutting/etc., no one really claimed that he was unworthy of his position and prestige with the world's leading MMA promotion.

Until Dan Henderson got hurt.

When UFC 151 lost its main card, Sonnen <strike>stepped up</strike> did what anyone with nothing to lose would do: volunteer to get a free lottery ticket. Facing irrelevancy after losing to pound-for-pound king Anderson Silva twice, Sonnen took the opportunity to try and get something his merits would never earn him again: A 205-pound title shot against the aforementioned Jones.

In a way, it's a shame that is going to be what he's remembered for, simply because his merits are outstanding and rank him as one of the top 185-pound competitors of this era.

Sonnen spent several years in numerous promotions beating up various toughman-level fighters while losing to nearly everyone with the grappling savvy to exploit his weakness on the ground. In fact, he would go nine years and 23 fights before defeating anyone with a sophisticated ground game, Trevor Prangley, way back at Ultimate Fight Night 4 in 2006. His career up to that point was littered with missteps up the ladder. Wins over the likes of Jason Lambert and a 21-year old Jason Miller were nice, but they were studded with losses to a 23-year old Forrest Griffin, Prangley and Jeremy Horn, among others.

Finally, after almost a decade in MMA, Sonnen started to put it together. The collegiate All-American wrestler went on a five-fight win streak that was fairly decent at the time. He managed to get past wily submission-artist Tim Credeur (at the time 6-1 with four submission wins), a 10-3 Tim McKenzie (with some reputable names on his record like a young Emanuel Newton and Doug Marshall) and UFC vet Amar Suloev, who many remember for his loss to Phil Baroni back at UFC 37, but is an old-school name many people don't recall much (he was the very first person to knockout Yushin Okami, holding wins over the likes of Murilo Bustamante, Dean Lister and Din Thomas).

This prompted the WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting) promotion to bring in Sonnen to face recently crowned undefeated champion, Filho, in 2007. It was Sonnen's big break, and at the time WEC was one of the top of the second-tier promotions in the sport. In fact, it was eventually purchased by UFC parent company, Zuffa, because of its success.

In what would become a recurring theme, however, Sonnen would fall in his quest for gold, getting tapped out late in the second round with an armbar.

It was a bizarre twist that would keep Sonnen from gaining a big championship win a mere year later. After beating Bryan Baker in his next fight, WEC decided to rematch Sonnen in what would be the last middleweight fight in the promotion's history. This was the time when Filho went off his rocker, and he missed weight while talking to ghosts in the cage.

Filho apparently ended up mailing Sonnen the belt after the fiasco, but it certainly wasn't the same thing as having it strapped around the waist in front of thousands of fans and television cameras. A terrible case of circumstance for Sonnen, but he would get his chance to make amends.

After stumbling in his Octagon debut against Demian Maia, Sonnen would rebound with a dominating decision against tough gatekeeper Dan Miller at UFC 98. He then derailed Okami's shot at a title fight by ending his three-fight win streak against the favored Japanese wrestler. This was the fight more than most that really showed the UFC fanbase just how good Sonnen was -- Okami was 9-1 in his last 10, defeating the likes of Evan Tanner, Mike Swick, Alan Belcher and Dean Lister -- falling only to then middleweight kingpin Rich Franklin.

In this match Sonnen completely outworked Okami in the wrestling department and exposed his middling stand up.

The win over Okami earned him a title-eliminator bout against favored Nate Marquardt, who was on a buzzsaw tear -- the best of his career -- having knocked out Martin Kampmann, Wilson Gouveia and the same Maia who had earlier bested Sonnen.

However, "The Great" fell to Sonnen in a "Fight of the Night" at UFC 109 and the latter earned his title shot against Silva.

I want to belabor this point for a minute because this had been Sonnen's career now for more than one decade -- a guy who went out and either won or lost, but no one had ever really paid attention to often if at all.

That was about to change as Sonnen started talking and people started responding.

People who equated cutting promos on the microphone to professional wrestling hated it for the most part. However, people like Brock Lesnar had attracted a huge amount of current and former fans of that particular brand of entertainment, and they liked hearing this from someone who didn't come from that background.

That didn't stop pretty much everyone from thinking that Sonnen was going to be destroyed by Silva since he had exploded everyone who engaged him (Maia and Thales Leites had both backed down from him for much of their fights). Then Sonnen (and testosterone and perhaps a broken rib) took it to Silva at UFc 117, shutting out the champ for 4.5 rounds in their fight.

It took the slick Brazilian jiu-jitsu from Silva and the continued failings of Sonnen at the worst opportunity to change that outcome at the last minute. Then he was subsequently popped for absurd levels of testosterone and the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) suspended him, killing a blockbuster immediate rematch with the Brazilian and rendering all his talking and bragging as nothing more than a artificially fueled sham.

Or was it?

UFC 117 was a fairly decent success with a reported 600,000 pay-per-view (PPV) buys. People outside the hardcore fanbase had paid attention to Sonnen for the first time in his career. Many people didn't even know about the steroid bust because they aren't big followers of this sport outside of watching half of the events.

Yes, there are people out there who didn't know he was suspended for steroids. I had this actual conversation with two co-workers a few weeks ago. One guy said "No he didn't, he has a medical exception." I had to explain what really happened, and I'm sure there are plenty of other people who just fork over a few dollars every month and don't actually read anything online.

So Sonnen continued talking, and continued winning. He choked out Brian Stann and snuck by Michael Bisping. Again, he didn't talk his way there, he earned it by beating a pair of Top 10-ranked fighters in back-to-back fights. The talking accompanied it, but there was no reason from a competition standpoint that the rematch shouldn't happen.

We all know what happened next in the UFC 148 main event shortly thereafter.

It was in this aftermath that the mouth overtook the accomplishments and Sonnen "earned" his coaching stint on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 17 opposite "Bones" and the title fight in which he was abysmally dominated little more than one week ago.

Look, I don't need to go into the race-baiting, the criminal past, the cheating or any of the other negatives. I've typed out enough words on the promo-cutting to really dump on a fighter who I'm trying to give some praise to. Sonnen has competed in 41 professional prize fights. And he deserved to be in every single one of them on his merits alone with one exception.

And that shouldn't define a career.

Sonnen could never grasp that brass ring, but like the Bills comparison earlier, that never meant that he didn't belong in that competition (aside from his time against Jones).

In closing, when we look back on the career of Chael Sonnen, be it now -- or whenever he actually retires -- it should be that of an athlete who was good enough, by hook or by crook, to make it to near the top of his chosen profession and was stopped three times by perhaps the two greatest fighters of their generations.

The circus bit was a great way to exploit something that a large segment of fans liked and that lazy media ate up. The exploitation shouldn't diminish the way he spent the majority of his time.

I look forward to reminiscing about the rest of his future career, but if he doesn't have one outside of catchweight fights against Rich Franklin or rivalry bouts with Wanderlei Silva, I think this his legacy is fitting regardless of what happens next.

Win, lose, draw or jaw.

Ever wonder how Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan get ready for UFC events? Well, you're in luck because MetroPCS has released a video following the two of the main voices of the UFC in the lead-up to UFC 159 fight night.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) commentators Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan may not always say what mixed martial arts (MMA) fans are hoping to hear on UFC broadcasts, but there is no denying the duo works as hard as anyone to try and become masters of their craft.

Goldberg and Rogan have called well over 100 events and 1000 fights together; however, each broadcast is uniquely difficult and requires individual emphasis in order to ensure things go as smoothly as possible from the first bout on the card to the last.

Prior to the recent UFC 159: "Jones vs. Sonnen" event in Newark, N.J., both Goldberg and Rogan were tailed by a camera crew from official UFC sponsor MetroPCS to get an inside look at exactly what kind of work they do in the lead-up to a major UFC pay-per-view (PPV) event.

In the three-minute video, Goldberg and Rogan talk about their individual roles, how they come together as a team, the preparation that goes into calling each event and much more.

Eighteen-fight UFC veteran Cheick Kongo is no longer a member of the promotion's roster after a nearly eight-year stint with the organization. Having completed his contract in the form of a UFC 159 defeat to Roy Nelson, the Frenchman took to his Facebook page to give an update to fans and explain the nature of his departure from the UFC.

Cheick Kongo's departure from the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) appears to be slightly overblown.

Following his first-round knockout loss to Roy Nelson at UFC 159 last month, news surfaced that Kongo's profile had been released from the organization's official website.

From there, it was misreported that Kongo had been released from the UFC when, in fact, he was not. The Frenchman completed his contract with the world's premier mixed martial arts (MMA) organization with the loss to Nelson and opted to decline a new four-fight deal prior to the event.

Why Kongo decided to turn down the deal remains a mystery at this time, but the 37-year-old insists he is not on the outs with the UFC brass and the next step in his career will be based on what is best for him.

"Don't believe he said- she said stories," Kongo wrote on his official Facebook page (translated from French). "I have not been cut by the UFC. I am Cheick Kongo so I know BEST what's NEXT for me. It doesn't mean that I am leaving the UFC, it doesn't mean that I am staying, it means this is my LIFE.

"Do not believe what we tell you. I am in the best position to know what happened to my career in the UFC. AND do not worry. For the moment, be aware that in no case the UFC not dismissed me and I am on very good terms with the American organization."

The end of Kongo's UFC tenure came as a surprise to many. Despite a less than stellar 1-2 record in his past three fights, Kongo has been a mainstay in the UFC heavyweight division since his debut with the organization in July 2006.

Since his debut, Kongo has competed under the UFC banner 18 times --the second most of any heavyweight in history-- going 11-6-1 in that time. Moreover, he has landed more total strikes and spent more time in the Octagon than any heavyweight ever.

Kongo has not hinted as to where he will end up in the future, but he is certainly leaving the door open for a return to the Octagon.

Team Jon Jones beat Team Chael Sonnen at it's own wrestling game at UFC 159, taking down the former NCAA Division 1 All-American wrestler and smashing him, physically and mentally, en route to a lopsided technical knockout victory. Brilliant!

Newark nasty machine? It was more like a Sonnen schooling session.

Not only did Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones break his toe during his winning title defense against Chael Sonnen at UFC 159 last weekend (April 27, 2013) in Newark, N.J., but "Bones" also broke the psyche of the self-proclaimed "American Gangster" psyche before finishing him in the first round.

And it was all because Jones Chael Sonnen'ed Chael Sonnen repeatedly, with ease, putting him on his back early and often and beating him up on the ground.

According to Greg Jackson, the head trainer for "Bones," the 205-pound champ took his time entering the Octagon and then immediately attacked Sonnen's strength from the bell, outwrestling the former NCAA Division 1 All-American and, in turn, winning an important psychological battle.

Jackson broke down earlier this afternoon (via Sherdog's "Beatdown" Radio Show):

"You always have to remember one of the dictums of our strategy is you don't necessarily stay away from a guy's strength. If you feel you can do better at it, you can head on attack it. If you take away what your opponent is good at, if that is no longer an option and your opponent hasn't layered their game plan so there's no real plan B, where do you go psychologically? It's always a good idea if you know your guy can outdo the other guy at their strength to charge right at that strength and basically just break them mentally. You want to make sure you've taken away their safety zone [and] you've taken away what they're supposed to do. That can have a very, very powerful psychological effect on people."

In what was a rather lopsided win, Jones was able to smother Sonnen and put him on his backside, which lead to the relentless ground-and-pound assault along the cage that eventually forced a referee stoppage. With the finish, one with which Sonnen suggeste he had "no problem" accepting, Jones tied Tito Ortiz 's decade-long 205-pound title defense record.

"The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" -- who teased that he would be forced to come out of mixed martial arts (MMA) retirement to ensure his streak remained unbeaten -- is confident that he would get the best of Jones in their primes. However, with a match up like that not even a remote possibility, the hunt is underway to identify the next victim for Jones, who now rests -- for up to eight weeks at a minimum -- just one win away from rewriting UFC history.

And while the answer to that mystery is likely right here, we'll have to sit back patiently and watch the situation unfold.

So, too, will Jones, a student of the sport, who more than likely will use his free time outside the gym to break down the tape of Lyoto Machida (again), Alexander Gustafsson and whoever the promotion intends to pair him up with in the future.

Chael Sonnen would have had no problem with winning the UFC light heavyweight title at the expense of Jon Jones' injured toe, admitting he would have taken the belt, high-tailed it out of New Jersey and never looked back.

"Diplomatically, you don't ever want to win that way [via injury]. The ones that hurt are those you are supposed to win and then blow it -- you do something, work against yourself and open that window for your opponent. When you're getting beat up, and you don't get a 'gimme,' that's not going to keep me up at night. That's my diplomatic answer. In reality, I would have grabbed that belt, snatched the microphone and told the crowd, 'he with the gold rules' and I would have walked out to the boos and never looked back."
