Wrapping up the unbelievable knockout Juan Manuel Marquez scored on Manny Pacquiao this past Sat., Dec. 8, 2012, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The video, the highlights, results, recaps, .gifs. We've got it all right here.

It was a busy weekend in combat sports, as Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returned to the FOX network with its "Henderson vs. Diaz" event on Saturday night (Dec. 8, 2012) from the KeyArena in Seattle, Washington, featuring Ben Henderson defending his lightweight championship with a decision win over Nate Diaz.

The better fighter won in "The Evergreen State."

A few states away, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, a much bigger battle unfolded as pound-for-pound boxing great Manny Pacquiao returned to the ring to battle his arch nemesis, Juan Manuel Marquez.

It was meeting number four between the two and it was quite possibly better than the previous three combined. Whereas there was no clear outcome in the 36 rounds prior, it took just six for Marquez to settle the score once and for all. He did so with a straight right bomb down the pipe that put Pacquiao out cold.

If you were too wrapped up in the world of mixed martial arts to notice Pacquiao vs. Marquez 4, or perhaps just too high and mighty to give the "sweet science" the time of day, you can bring yourself up to speed with highlights and event links below.

Fans of combat sports won't be disappointed.

Manny Pacquiao had yet to wake up from getting knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez before Lorenzo Fertitta was tweeting about boxing missing out on the Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather super-fight. But is that because he's feeling the pressure to make one of his own?

When Juan Manuel Marquez knocked out Manny Pacquiao in the sixth round of their 147-pound bout on HBO boxing pay-per-view (PPV) last night (Sat., Dec. 8, 2012) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, it didn't take long for someone at the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) to make mention of it.

Surprisingly enough, it was company co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta who took to Twitter with the following remark:

"Gotta strike when the iron is hot boxing! Lost manny/Floyd 4ever. #gspvssilva #silvavsbones #superfights!"

That's an interesting tweet because it's fairly open to interpretation. One might perceive that as a higher up at UFC taking yet another shot at boxing, something the promotion has damn near made a past time of.

But this might actually be more indicative of the pressure the UFC is feeling to make the super-fights it has available right now, as mentioned by Fertitta. Indeed, promotion President Dana White had all but promised he would convince Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre and Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva fight each other sometime early next year. He also mentioned Silva possibly fighting Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones after that, assuming he emerged victorious, of course.

That would have undoubtedly equaled the two biggest super-fights in the history of MMA.

Unfortunately, the UFC is running into many of the same problems boxing has when talk comes up of actually putting these fights together. St. Pierre and Silva can't seem to settle on the weight they feel the bout should be contested at. Silva and Jones are friends who don't really want to fight each other. One side wants its concessions, the other side wants the same, and no one is happy.

That sounds familiar.

Fertitta likely recognizes that the longer the UFC waits to put those fights together, the more they risk the chance that they'll fall apart as those fighters continue taking on different challengers. A potential Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather fight is likely dead in the water thanks to Marquez's crushing knockout. If Nick Diaz does indeed get his fight against St. Pierre and does something similar, there goes yet another super-fight.

Like Lorenzo said, it's time to strike while the iron is still hot.

Now that Manny Pacquiao has been knocked out cold at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez, a potential fight against Floyd Mayweather is likely dead. But you know what? That's totally okay.

All it took was one punch. One flawlessly timed, perfectly placed shot to the chin to put pound-for-pound legend Manny Pacquiao down for the count.

Not just down, actually. Out. Cold.

It was stunning. Juan Manuel Marquez, the man who delivered that knockout blow, had gone 36 rounds with "Pacman" in three previous fights and hardly came close to a similar result. Sure, you could argue "Dinamita" won each contest, but it was never as clear as the one-punch destruction he brought down last night (Sat., Dec. 8, 2012) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

That moment had far-reaching consequences too. It's unlikely now, if it ever was before, that a Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather fight will ever come to be. If it was on already shaky ground before last night's "Sin City" shocker, it's likely dead in the water now.

And you know what? That's okay.

Marquez helped bring closure to a situation that felt like it would never be resolved. He helped combat sports fans realize there's no longer any need to nurture the hope that there is hope to make Pacquiao vs. Mayweather happen. Yes, it's still a possibility, albeit a long one, but the shine is off the apple.

We would still love to see it, we just no longer need it.

In fact, there may actually be more demand for an unprecedented fifth fight between the Filipino fighting machine and his actual arch nemesis, Marquez. You would think finally reaching a definitive result would squash that talk but this rivalry defies all logic. It cares not for the normal bounds, the usual parameters placed on such things.

The reality here is that Pacquiao vs. Marquez 5 looks more intriguing than Pacquiao vs. Mayweather.

And that's okay, more than okay, even. It's downright delectable, and exactly the kind of history we as sports fans should want to be a part of. Instead of wallowing in the despair of losing out on what could have been the biggest fight of all time, let's instead celebrate what has definitely been one of the greatest series of boxing bouts ever.

It deserves our admiration.

Juan Manuel Marquez scored an unbelievable sixth round one punch knockout of Manny Pacquiao last night (Sat., Dec. 8, 2012) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Now you can check out the photos from the memorable night.

What a glorious night of boxing action.

Fans on both sides can appreciate the incredible display put on by Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez when the two got together for a fourth time last night (Sat., Dec. 8, 2012) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

After an underwhelming undercard, the Filipino fighting sensation came out hoping to establish his game early. It was Marquez who struck first, however, with a third round knockdown. "Pacman" answered back with one of his own in the fifth leading to a wild ride through three minutes that may go down as one of the best rounds in history.

Then, in the sixth, just before the bell, "Dinamita" exploded with a straight right hand that sent Pacquiao to the mat in a heap of flesh, a shocking finish to one of the greatest rivalries the sport has ever seen.

It was amazing.

Manny Pacquiao's shocking knockout loss last night is a bold reminder that fighters -- and fights -- are unable to stand the test of time indefinitely. It's not exclusive to boxing, either. Father Time showed his hand in three bouts last night on the UFC on FOX 5 main card with different themes resonating. For the players involved, each was a meditation on how much fighters give to the sport in different ways with the opportunities presented them.

If you fight long enough, one day you'll be on the short end of the stick in a way you could never have imagined. That's the bitch of making your living in combat sports, and with injuries and mileage accrued during a long career, I can only say this:

Make the most of what you can while you can, and strike when the iron is hot.

That's the reason Manny Pacquiao's shocking knockout defeat (watch it here) Saturday night (Dec. 8, 2012) only further reinforced how much boxing has missed the bus toward its biggest opportunities.

Starched in the sixth round of a completely pointless bout with Juan Manuel Marquez, Pacquiao's face-plant -- his second loss in the row -- pretty much scuttled the long-anticipated potential of a megabucks superfight with Floyd Mayweather. Pacquiao's previous loss -- a ripoff decision that only the judges think he lost against Timothy Bradley -- was the flip side of boxing's dysfunctional coin that did its part in the scuttling of that mega match.

Pacquiao and Mayweather had at least two full years of massive fan anticipation to make the megafight happen. Instead, they quibbled over stupid details, and now the Golden Goose has fled the coop.

That was a good reminder of how important match ups and mega bouts are to the health and fan base of any combat sport. Now that boxing has become, well, boxing, and mixed martial arts (MMA) has the opportunity to fill much of that vacuum, the time to strike while the iron is hot is still an applicable concept. There are plenty of fighters who miss out on what they might perhaps have achieved, but missing out on great matches is an entirely different kind of tragedy.

Father Time showed his hand in three bouts last night, with different themes resonating. For the players involved, each was a meditation on how much fighters give to the sport in different ways with the opportunities presented them.

B.J. Penn
They don't come any more game-bred than Penn, who showcased his fantastic chin and fighting spirit in extending Rory MacDonald to a one-sided decision loss. Penn's been a world-class competitor for a full decade, and his moniker of "The Prodigy" is as bittersweet a nickname as the sport has seen. It's at once a reminder of the brilliant flashes of potential he showed, and a confirmation of the impressive title reign he made with three dominant defenses. Yet he seemed disinterested in two defeats against Frankie Edgar, sleepwalking while "The Answer" outhustled him. At his core, Penn needs to feel threatened to really turn it up, which is the reason he always comes out scrapping against welterweights, win or lose.

This was a tough loss for Penn, who's obviously going to have to consider cutting to 155 pounds where he truly belongs. But, sadly enough, the same paradox arises. I can see him losing decisions there. Not because he lacks the talent, but because he doesn't fight with the fire of feeling his safety is on the line. If the B.J. Penn who takes on bigger guys at 170 pounds competed at lightweight, he could be a champion again.

But, after another tough pounding and added mileage, that is more likely a pipe dream at this point.

One thing you can say about Penn: While the debate on whether or not he fulfilled his potential is open to discussion, he fought virtually everyone in two weight classes. Throw in a completely badassed attempt at taking on Lyoto Machida, which saw Penn outsized to a decision loss, and Penn is pretty much the all-time king of fighting anyone, anywhere, at any weight.

At least in the modern era of MMA.

Mauricio Rua
It was rough to see Rua struggle with Alexander Gustafsson, a nice, presentable, somewhat talented fighter who is now a title contender by default, namely because Jon Jones has stomped everyone else and the UFC is salivating at the prospect -- by any means necessary -- of building a foreign attraction.

It's obvious they are looking to turn him into a Swedish Michael Bisping.

Rua's prime in Pride FC culminated in a devastating 2005, where his destructive run include knockout of Quinton Jackson, Alistair Overeem (yes, "The Reem" really did weigh 205 pounds once), the eminently durable Ricardo Arona and a balls-out brawling decision win over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Since moving to the UFC and multiple injuries to recover from, he's gone from a guy toting a machine gun to a dude with a break-action shotgun.

And it seems to take a while to reload.

He's still tough as nails, but can no longer sustain the offensive work rate that made him a force of nature. Seeing him struggle with Gustafsson, and his previous battle with Brandon Vera, clearly indicate he is one of those guys who is going to have to be carried out on his shield to really be convinced he should retire. That's what made him great in his prime. It's also what makes him an asset that the UFC will have to properly amortize, much as they did Tito Ortiz, as his market value plummets with each outing.

The good news is that Rua fought the best of his day, and got to lock horns with most of the top guys who were in his path (a notable exception -- then-teammate Wanderlei Silva, who reigned as Pride FC light heavyweight champ, while Rua was decimating the ranks).

Mike Swick
Father Time hit Swick in a different way. He never got the chance to fight for a major title, but a long career marked by a rough series of health issues and injuries has taken its toll. Consistency in the fight game is a feat in itself; Swick's outstanding striking against DaMarques Johnson suggested he'd finally captured the sharpness that made him a promising middleweight.

Yet against Matt Brown he looked underwater and out of sorts. The coup de grace, a numbing knockout loss in a split-second, was an underwhelming way to go for a guy who once tore through a better class of competition -- at 185 pounds no less -- not too long ago.

Swick is in the tough position of being a veteran with some name value who has never quite risen to the level of elite contender. As such, look for him to be pitted against other guys to help them build their names. A veteran on the downslope can also flip the script with an inspiring performance -- see Jamie Varner's knockout of Edson Barboza -- so it will be interesting to see what Swick can do now that his back's been pushed against the wall.

Jason Probst can be reached at twitter.com/jasonprobst

Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao went for the kill last night (Dec. 8, 2012) in his 147-pound prize fight with Juan Manuel Marquez, hoping to put to rest once and for all the speculation that swirled around their first three encounters. His spirited aggression, however, led to a jaw-dropping face plant as the sixth round expired. Where will Pacquiao go from here?

It was surreal.

After Juan Manual Marquez landed that thundering right hand, it was like my brain was having a hard time figuring out what it was seeing. There was about a second where I didn't hear anything, didn't think anything.

Ever since I started watching boxing, one idea had been firmly lodged in my head: "Manny Pacquiao is the best in the world." He made Erik Morales quit. He blew away David Diaz and Ricky Hatton with one punch. Then there was the Miguel Cotto beatdown and pummeling Antonio Margarito into oblivion.

What this weird, smiling little man had accomplished defied belief.

After the third Marquez fight and the Timothy Bradley robbery, that idea lost some of its luster, but he was still on a pedestal to me. Sure, he was a bit slower and sure, he could lose a decision, but he was Manny freaking Pacquiao.

He'd be fine.

And suddenly everything popped back into focus. There was Pacquiao, face down on the canvas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was lifeless, helpless and heaving for oxygen as everyone ringside looked around in sheer astonishment. The medical team soon descended on him, trying to get him to move, while Jinkee Pacquiao sobbed nearby in a panic.

And there was Juan Manuel Marquez celebrating his long-overdue vindication.

When I was first asked about writing this article, I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to say. Whether Pacquiao won or lost a decision, I figured the best course of action would be to take the stylistically-favorable and undoubtedly lucrative fight with Brandon Rios early next year that Bob Arum had been floating. Rios is plodding, easy to outbox, and has no discernible Plan B when goading his opponent into a brawl doesn't work.

Honestly, there aren't many options after that beacuse Golden Boy has a lockdown on most of the major players at 140 and 147 save for Lucas Matthysse, who I don't think anyone on this planet will willingly fight. His best bet would probably be to target one of the lesser titleholders at 154 pounds such as Cornelius Bundrage.

But now? Pacquiao should take the Rios fight if it's available and then retire.

Is he still an elite fighter? Sure. Could he still beat most of the 147- and 140-pound division fighters? Probably.

But, that was the kind of knockout that breaks fighters. Pacquiao is slowing down already and has a whole heap of other stuff on his plate at the moment. Plus, one can only imagine that his paydays will take a hit after something like this. Retiring off a crushing loss like this would be unbearable, so taking a winnable fight against a prominent fighter and then calling it quits would be the best course of action.

You can forget Floyd Mayweather Jr., unless "Money" now sees the opportunity to make a haul at the expense of the fading Filipino and drops his demands.

Let's all remember that Pacquiao has been in the game for almost 20 years -- and he's still just 33 years old. His boxing odometer, however, has turned over if not once, perhaps twice, in a grueling and busy prize fighting career. What Pacquiao has accomplished is frankly astonishing. He has a promising political career. He doesn't need to fight anymore.

I am and will always be a Pacquiao fan. I'm grateful for the amazing fights he's given us.

I just don't want to see him face-down again.

Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez separately and independently vowed to pick up the pace and hunt for a finish in their fourth showdown to once and for all emphatically establish a winner. The mission was accomplished last night (Dec. 8, 2012) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, with Marquez scoring a brutal buzzer-beating knockout finish.

Great things were expected when Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez stepped into the ring for the fourth time last night (Dec. 8, 2012) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Those expectations were not met, on the contrary, they were exceeded.

After two rounds that saw Pacquiao use his speed to outbox the bulkier Marquez, things took a turn for the dramatic in the third when "Dinamita" followed a jab with a monstrous overhand right that sent "Pacman" legitimately to the canvas for the first time in ages.

Though Pacquiao went down hard, Marquez was perhaps too patient, not pressing the advantage and letting Pacquiao escape the round. Marquez looked to be taking further control of the fight after a good fourth round, only to go down himself in the fifth on thanks to the Filipino fighter's trademark straight left.

The momentum swung Pacquiao’s way once again shortly thereafter with him finding his rhythm in the sixth frame. The Filipino star began to land his left hand with regularity, both by itself and in combinations. As the timekeeper signaled 10 seconds left, it looked like Pacquiao was fully in control in, indeed, going for the definitive finish.

Then it happened.

Pacquiao left his left hand just a tiny bit too low as he attempted one final rush at the bell. Marquez unleashed an absolute beast of a right hand, sending Pacquiao face-down, ass-up right as the bell sounded. The referee waited for Pacquiao to rise so he could give him a standing eight count before sending him to his corner, however, he was lifeless.

In fact, it probably would have taken industrial equipment to peel him off the canvas -- Pacquiao was sleeping for a good 90 seconds while the Marquez camp swarmed the ring in shock and unbridled excitement. It was fight of the year while it lasted. It was the knockout of the year when it ended.

Wow.

And it couldn’t have come at a better time, either. All three of the under card bouts comprised an exponentially more talented fighter cruising past an inferior opponent. Dominican prospect Javier Fortuna defeated Patrick Hyland in a lackluster affair, while Miguel Vazquez danced circles around a mostly-inanimate Mercito Gesta.

The sole excitement of the three came when Cuban star Yuriorkis Gamboa, after dropping foe Michael Farenas twice over the course of nine rounds, got cocky during a flurry and went down hard on a left hand, though he won a wide decision anyway.

That was certainly not the case in the back-and-forth main event, which was one of the most action-packed 18 minute high-profile prize fights in recent memory. One that could possibly demand a fifth encounter in the near future.

It's a big money fight ... still.
