MMAmania's Brian Hemminger takes a closer look at tomorrow night's World Series of Fighting 1 co-main event between light heavyweights Anthony Johnson and D.J. Linderman. What's the key to victory for both men? Find out inside.

Two talented light heavyweights will be squaring off against each other tomorrow night (Nov. 3, 2012) as Anthony Johnson takes on D.J. Linderman on the World Series of Fighting 1 main card in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Johnson was a top prospect in the UFC, but got the boot after suffering from multiple weight-cutting issues. He's since moved from welterweight all the way up to light heavyweight and now that he's got his weight under control, he's looked sharp, winning three straight bouts since his UFC release. He'll be looking to continue his streak tomorrow night.

D.J. Linderman has experience at both heavyweight and light heavyweight, being a Bellator semifinalist at 205 pounds and recently winning the Cage Warriors heavyweight title. His current stretch of victories has earned him a huge step up in competition against Johnson in the co-main event of WSOF.

Anthony Johnson

Record: 13-4 overall

Key Wins: Dan Hardy (UFC Fight Night 24), Jake Rosholt (Xtreme Fight Night 9), Dave Branch (TFC 22)

Key Losses: Vitor Belfort (UFC 142), Josh Koscheck (UFC 106), Rich Clementi (UFC 76)

How he got here: Anthony Johnson took the fast track to the UFC. With his freakish size and power for a welterweight, he made his promotional debut in just his fourth professional fight. Prior to that, he had been a national champion wrestling on the junior college level.

He didn't get off to a great start in the UFC, going 2-2 in his first four fights, losing via submission to the significantly smaller Rich Clementi and getting his eye poked badly by Kevin Burns which somehow resulted in a TKO loss. In between those fights, he showed his potential by knocking Ultimate Fighter season six finalist Tommy Speer silly in less than a minute with a vicious punch.

"Rumble" went on a solid three fight win streak, avenging the eye poke to Burns and knocking out both Luigi Fioravanti and Yoshiyuki Yoshida in the first round. This earned him a big time divisional match-up against top contender Josh Koscheck. Johnson struggled to land big strikes against Koscheck, resorting to wild punches and his lack of a serious submission game resulted in a second round rear naked choke defeat.

He was slated to face John Howard but their fight next got past the ridiculously awesome war of words before Johnson was sidelined with a horrible knee injury. He would be shelved for 17 months before finally returning against Dan Hardy at UFC Fight Night 24. Johnson smashed Hardy with strikes and then rode out a decision with his significantly superior wrestling, something he caught some flack from the fans and media.

He faced the surging Charlie Brenneman at UFC on Versus 6 and floored the wrestling, stuffing his takedowns and finishing him off with a brutal head kick. Afterwards, he finally decided to move to middleweight to take on "The Phenom."

How he gets it done: Johnson has knocked out his opponent in all but one of his UFC victories. He's got some serious power. "Rumble" is very dangerous with not only his punches but also his kicks, something Belfort should be very careful about considering he tends to stand on the outside before diving in. That's how he got caught by Anderson Silva's famous front kick

Despite coming up from welterweight, Anthony Johnson is the bigger fighter so his best plan of action would be to stay on the outside looking for the big power shot whether it's a counter punch or a huge head kick. If Belfort dives in with his famous punching flurries, Johnson needs to change levels and slam "The Phenom" to the canvas.

It's the ability to overpower Belfort that should be able to carry Johnson to victory. He could really outmuscle and wear out the Brazilian either in the clinch or with takedowns. It's the things that Johnson can do that Belfort can't which could be the deciding factor here.

D.J. Linderman

Record: 14-3 overall

Key Wins: Devin Cole (BKP-Night of Champions), Mike Hayes 2x (Cage Warriors 47, Alliance: The Uprising)

Key Losses: Richard Hale (Bellator 42), Devin Cole (Cinco De Massacre)

How he got here: D.J. Linderman got his start as a heavyweight, smashing and bashing his way to an 8-1 record in the first two years of his career which included victories over the likes of Devin Cole and Mike Hayes along the way with the only defeat being a rematch to Cole.

This stretch earned him some attention from Bellator, who invited him to compete in their inaugural light heavyweight tournament. In the quarterfinals, Lindermean stopped the favorited Raphael Davis via third round TKO after sustaining some punishment in the opening round.

He would go on to lose a close split decision to eventual tournament finalist Richard Hale in the next round, but he followed the loss up with two consecutive first round finishes.

After stumbling against Moise Rimbon, Linderman has reeled off three straight wins including another victory against Mike Hayes, this time for the Cage Warriors heavyweight title. He dropped back down to light heavyweight to battle Anthony Johnson in the World Series of Fighting's inaugural show.

How he gets it done: Linderman has to utilize his weapons which have helped put him over the top in nearly all of his fights, his gas tank, his chin and his power. If he can survive that initial blitz from Anthony Johnson and make "Rumble" work, an opening could definitely appear for him to begin taking over.

Linderman can take a shot, but Anthony Johnson is one of the hardest hitters in the game. It would be wise if he covered up with both elbows if Johnson gets overly aggressive, blocking most of the heavy offense and potentially wearing Johnson down a bit.

The longer this fight goes, the better Linderman's odds of winning become as he's proven himself to be able to handle a three round fight time and time again. It's all about surviving that initial onslaught from Johnson and if the Blackzilian slows down, he's got a relatively good shot of taking over.

Fight X-Factor: The biggest X-Factor for this fight has to be Johnson's progression up to the light heavyweight division. It was just 13 months ago that "Rumble" was knocking out Charlie Brenneman inside the UFC and now he's fighting not one but two weight classes higher due to issues with his body. Has he put the weight on correctly? Is he cutting properly finally? Those are all interesting questions heading into this performance. Johnson has looked strong in his last two fights since moving to light heavyweight, stopping both Esteves Jones and Jake Rosholt in the last three months. It'll be interesting to see how he performs against someone who might be even bigger than him for once.

Bottom Line: Anthony Johnson is almost always exciting. He's got that finisher's mentality whenever he steps into the cage and his power in both his hands and feet is immense. If he puts his fists on Linderman, he's got the power to potentially be the first man to stop him. Linderman is a gritty light heavyweight so you can expect him to keep pushing forward despite the dangers Johnson presents. It's not likely that there will be a submission here as both man will be looking for the knockout from start to finish.

MMAmania's Brian Hemminger previews Saturday night's World Series of Fighting main card bout between bantamweights Miguel Torres and Marlon Moraes. What's the key to victory for both men? Find out inside.

Miguel Torres

Record: 40-5 overall

Key Wins: Takeya Mizugaki (WEC 40), Nick Pace (UFC 139), Antonio Banuelos (UFC 126)

Key Losses: Michael McDonald (UFC 145), Joseph Benavidez (WEC 47), Demetrious Johnson (UFC 130)

How he got here: Miguel Torres got his start on the local Indiana circuit where he beat the ever-living tar out of everyone in his path. He got off to a ridiculous 31-1 record before ever leaving the state and avenged his only loss to Ryan Ackerman. During this period, he sought out Carlson Gracie and became one of his top proteges, earning a black belt which only added to his legend at the time.

Torres finally fought in the WEC where he dominated early, defeating champion Chase Beebe for the title and then defending the strap three times which had him in consideration for the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet. Unfortunately, the powerful Brian Bowles stopped the Torres hype train in its tracks and then a follow-up submission defeat at the hands of Joseph Benavidez put the now-former champ in a career crisis.

The Mexican-American fighter left his Indiana gym to train at TriStar in Montreal, and while the gameplans helped him bounce back with two straight wins, they also took away his infamous tenacity. He dropped a close decision to Demetrious Johnson last summer and after defeating Nick Pace in a bounce-back fight, he would be cut from the promotion for an insensitive post on twitter.

Torres apologized and was brought back into the fold and was rewarded with a very high-profile fight against Michael McDonald, but he would lose via first round knockout and was again on the outside looking in. He found a new home with World Series of Fighting and he'll be battling Moraes in his debut with the promotion.

How he gets it done: Torres needs to use his best natural advantages in this fight. He's one of the tallest (5'9) and has the longest reaches (76") in the bantamweight division, although he takes away some of that with how he hunches over during his fights. "Angel" has been putting some time in working his jab at TriStar Gym in Montreal and if he can establish it early against Moraes, he can keep his opponent at bay and set up stronger attacks later in the fight.

A big here will be for Torres to take what Moraes gives him and try not to force anything. His biggest failings have come when he's tried to hard and left huge openings, most notably against Bowles.

If the fight does get inside, Torres needs to utilize his elite grappling skills. He's been working his wrestling the hardest of everything so hopefully he can use that knowledge to stay on top instead of working from bottom as he seems to be so accustomed to. If he does find himself on bottom, Torres needs to work his sweeps instead of his submissions as it's unlikely he catches the very wary Moraes from his guard.

Marlon Moraes

Record: 8-4-1 overall

Key Wins: Jarod Card (XFC 17)

Key Losses: Deividas Taurosevicius (ROC 38)

How he got here: Marlon Moraes began fighting when he was just 19 years old, beginning his career strong with three straight wins but an ill-advised jump in competition to Shooto Brazil handed him two TKO losses in a row to derail his progress.

Moraes followed with a two-year unbeaten stretch but again, a two fight losing streak, both via submission kept him floundering on the local circuit and failing to progress.

Since then, he's looked sharp inside the XFC promotion, most recently knocking out Bellator veteran Jarod Card in just 47 seconds which earned him a shot at by far the biggest fight of his career against Miguel Torres for the World Series of Fighting.

How he gets it done: Moraes best plan of attack is to show Torres no respect whatsoever. He can't get caught up in the former WEC champion's legacy and get starstruck in there or he's going to have a rough night.

Moraes has a fantastic arsenal of strikes under his belt and throws them in fluid combinations with power. If he can get inside without risking the takedown, he could completely dice through Torres' defenses and put the UFC veteran down for the count.

Expect to see some major aggression out of Moraes if he wants to pull off the huge upset here. He's got the youthful exuberance to disregard Torres' reputation and just go for the kill. It would be a tremendous feather in his cap if he can pull it off. If he can avoid the ground game, his speed and power could actually win him the fight.

Fight X-Factor: There are a few factors at play here. The first, obviously, is whether or not Torres is taking this fight as seriously as he should. Moraes is a very dangerous striker and don't let his 8-4 record fool you. If Torres thinks this one is easily in the bag, he could quickly be seeing stars.

The other factor is the ground game. If Moraes can't stay upright during this fight, he's going to be in serious trouble. He's been submitted by significantly less talented grapplers than Torres in his young career thus far and if Torres gets him on the ground, he'll likely be tapped out.

Bottom Line: This fight has some serious potential if it's kept standing. Will Torres be able to utilize his reach? Can Moraes dive inside and crash through his defenses? There are so many questions on the feet and honestly, Moraes has a pretty respectable chance of pulling off the upset if he can keep it there. But this is MMA. If Torres can get this fight to the ground, he'll almost guarantee a win as long as he can keep Moraes there and work his lethal Brazilian jiu-jitsu game.

MMAmania's Brian Hemminger takes a closer look at Saturday night's World Series of Fighting 1 main card bout between welterweights Gregor Gracie and Tyson Steele. What's the key to victory for both men? Find out inside.

Two talented welterweight grapplers will collide this Saturday night (Nov. 3, 2012) as Gregor Gracie takes on Tyson Steele on the World Series of Fighting 1 main card in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Gregor Gracie is looking to continue the rich tradition of successful Gracie jiu-jitsu fighters in mixed martial arts. After a three fight stint in One FC saw him alternate wins and losses, he'll be looking to showcase his skills in America for the first time in over two years.

Tyson Steele is an accomplished ground fighter in his own right, at one point finishing five straight opponents via rear naked choke (and six of his nine wins overall). He enters this fight riding a three fight win streak and most recently scored a decision win for the first time in his 10 fight career.

Gregor Gracie

Record:7-2 overall

How he got here: Gregor Gracie was a trainer under Renzo Gracie in New Jersey back in the IFL days but after working alongside Renzo's team for an extended period, he decided he'd like to give mixed martial arts a shot himself. He started his career off promising enough, submitting his first two opponents but a devastating head kick knockout loss at the hands of Doug Gordon had him rethinking his career.

Two years later, Gracie reemerged, winning three straight fights and earning an invite to compete for the One FC promotion in Asia.

In One FC, Gracie experienced mixed results. He won a decision in his debut, but was upset by Adam Shahir Kayoom this past June via decision after slowing down in the final two rounds. He got back on track against Nicholas Mann at ONE FC 5, winning by first round armbar just two months ago

Now, he's slated to make his World Series of Fighting debut against Steele.

How he gets it done: This one is pretty simple. As a Gracie fighter, Gregor absolutely wants to get this fight to the ground and put himself in a dominant position. He can't afford to be sloppy as Steele is pretty competent on the canvas and mistakes will be capitalized upon by either fighter.

Gracie's best plan of action is to quickly close the distance and work for takedowns or trips along the fence. If he can put Steele on his back and make him uncomfortable, he should be well on his way to winning the fight.

The faster he can finish the better as Gracie has slowed down in fights that have gone past the first two rounds. Both of his career losses were fights that went into the third round so this is definitely something he'd like to avoid.

Tyson Steele

Record: 9-1 overall

How he got here: Tyson Steele got his professional MMA career kicked off in 2008, quickly reeling off six straight first round stoppage victories on the local Canadian scene including an impressive five straight rear naked chokes.

This early boon to his career earned him an invite to Canada's premier fight league Maximum Fighting Championships, but when he couldn't finish Curtis DeMarce in the first round, he was surprisingly submitted in the second frame via triangle choke.

Since coming up short in the MFC, Steele has reeled off three straight victories including two inside the first minute of the first round. In his last bout, he went the distance for the first time in his career against Jarod Milko, winning a unanimous decision.

This earned him another shot at the big stage against Gregor Gracie.

How he gets it done: Steele loves to go to the ground, but he's going to have to be cautious against a dangerous fighter like Gregor Gracie. If he dives in recklessly, he's going to find himself in a world of hurt either via submissions or just bad positioning due to being swept.

Steele should be cautiously aggressive, perhaps testing his stand-up in the early portion of the fight to see if he has an advantage there. If he does, he should press it and try to avoid the ground game completely.

If Gracie starts to slow down and the fight goes into the second or third round, Steele can afford to be more aggressive and even take him down. Gracie's been knocked out before so perhaps a heavy assault of ground and pound could turn the tide in Steele's favor.

Fight X-Factor: The biggest X-Factor for this fight is the leap in competition level for Steele. Sure, he looks great against local fighters he can submit in the first round, but that lone loss to Curtis DeMarce is troubling, especially considering DeMarce is 12-10 overall and lost three of his last four MFC fights. Gracie is a significantly stronger grappler than DeMarce and if he can get his hands on Steele and "The Man of" is not ready for him, it could be a rough night for the Canadian.

Bottom Line: This is a bout between two men who love to take the fight to the ground and work for submissions. Expect to see takedowns, sweeps, submission attempts and some entertaining scrambles. Of course, the ground games could cancel each other out and we could be privy to a sloppy kickboxing match. Whether or not this fight is worth your time likely depends on the former over the latter outcome.

MMAmania's Brian Hemminger previews this Saturday night's World Series of Fighting main card opener between light heavyweights Tyrone Spong and Travis Bartlett. What's the key to victory for both men? Find out inside

Two exciting light heavyweights will duke it out this Saturday night (Nov. 3, 2012) as reputed kickboxer Tyrone Spong makes his MMA debut against fellow striker Travis Bartlett in the opening bout of the World Series of Fighting 1 main card in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Spong has spent his entire career kicking ass and taking names in the world of competitive kickboxing while fighting overseas against some of the best strikers in the world. After coming over to Imperial Athletics to help Rashad Evans train his striking, he took a liking to MMA and will be testing out his skills this Saturday night.

Travis Bartlett is a powerful striker in his own right, with nine fights under his belt and having finished five of his seven victories by knockout in his MMA career. He'll be returning from a lengthy layoff to take on Spong this weekend.

Tyrone Spong

Record: 0-0 overall (68-6-1 in kickboxing)

How he got here: Tyrone Spong got his start in the world of kickboxing in 2003, defeating everyone in his path and packing on muscle to his frame. He steadily moved up weight classes because no one could hang with him until finally reaching heavyweight.

He competed in the 2010 K-1 World Grand Prix, defeating Ray Sefo to advance to the single night tournament where he drew Alistair Overeem in the opening round. After a hard-fought three rounds, he would lose a unanimous decision and was eliminated.

Since then, Spong has won four straight kickboxing bouts including a decision over Melvin Manhoef and a knockout of legend Peter Aerts in the final fight of Aerts' career. Spong started training with the Blackzilians at Imperial Athletics and after showcasing incredible improvements on his ground game, he decided to take a stab at mixed martial arts. He'll be making his debut this weekend.

How he gets it done: There was never a strategy more obvious than this one. Spong needs to keep the fight standing and utilize his incredible striking advantage. He's one of the single most dangerous strikers in the world in any facet so that means he'll have a tremendous edge in this department against just about any MMA fighter.

If he can utilize a sprawl, avoid clinches and takedowns, he's going to have plenty of opportunities to punish his opponent. Bartlett has not fought in over two years so he is likely going to be rusty. If he starts slow, Spong needs to capitalize before he gets back in a groove and could potentially utilize all of his tools.

Travis Bartlett

Record: 7-2 overall

How he got here: Travis Bartlett started his professional mixed martial arts career in 2007, winning his amateur fights and then his first two fights as a pro before running into current UFC fighter Tom Lawlor, where he was choked unconscious.

After the loss, Bartlett reeled off five straight stoppage victories, defeating all but one opponent inside the first round and nearly all of them by knockout (with one coming via injury stoppage).

His momentum was halted via decision by Robert Scott at an MMA Explosion event back in 2010 and he hasn't fought since. He was coaxed to return for a big name fight against Tyrone Spong and he accepted.

How he gets it done: Bartlett loves to stand and bang, but that couldn't be a worse idea here. If he chooses to brawl with Spong, he's going to get his lights put out in a bad way.

The best plan of action is to make this ugly and dirty, perhaps pushing Spong into the fence while hunting for takedowns. If he can get the fight to the canvas, he's going to have to stay heavy and keep Spong from using his athleticism and strength to get back to his feet.

If he can't get the fight to the ground or take away Spong's weapons, it's going to be a bad night for Bartlett.

Fight X-Factor: The biggest X-Factor for this fight has to be Bartlett's layoff against Spong's MMA debut. By the time he steps into the cage on Saturday night, it'll be over two years and three months since Bartlett last competed. Spong has stayed fresh with his kickboxing while improving his overall game for MMA so he'll be less rusty with his fighting skills, but he's never been tested in an MMA fight where submissions, clinches and takedowns are perfectly legal.

It'll all come down to whether or not Bartlett has what it takes to get Spong on the ground, and considering he's a stand-up fighter, that's easier said than done.

Bottom Line: There is major potential to see something amazing in this fight as Spong is a ferocious striker who's got something to prove. If Bartlett can't take the fight to the ground or close the distance with a clinch, you're going to see a spectacular finish with strikes as Spong is capable of finishing grown men that outweigh him by 40 pounds and are equally trained in kickboxing. Against a rusty mixed martial artist, this could be pretty.
