UFC strawweight Cynthia Calvillo suspended six-months by USADA

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) strawweight up-and-comer Cynthia Calvillo, 30, was lit by United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) after testing positive for marijuana metabolites in the wake of her UFC 219 loss to Carla Esparza last December in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The result was a six-month suspension from mixed martial arts (MMA).

The good news for Calvillo (6-1) is that her timeout is retroactive to her last fight, so she’s almost halfway there, and could reduce it even further by completing a USADA-approved drug awareness and management program.

She may still need to answer to Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) at some point, but is unlikely to face any serous punishment in the wake of her first offense. Calvillo currently sits at No. 9 in the official stawweight rankings (see them here).

Esparza, meanwhile, will move on to face top contender Claudia Gadelha at UFC 225 pay-per-view (PPV) event this June in Chicago.

It's great to see that USADA works

and that cheaters are being brought to justice.

Good. This sport has no place for druggies.

While MJ is not a "PED" per se...It is on the prohibited list in comp. Smoke light the week of a fight and not at all the day of the fight(and don't smoke it up until a few hours after the fight)

Chick Diaz II indeed.

USADA's mentality is like the antiquated USFDA...Here's a HISTORY lesson about the whole topic! (WARNING: TRIGGERED CONTENT!)

And it all stems from the Temperance Movement and Prohibition Movement of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s…it’s total ignorant horseshit.

In honor of "International Women’s Day", how about a shout out to Frances Willard for bringing us the TM and Carrie Nation for PM. Carrie was a self-righteous old blister who became a quasi-celebrity for going into bars with a hatchet and going full monkey nuts! It was like a prehistoric version of a reality show. Townships would find that Carrie was inbound and they’d gather and picnic outside the local bars, waiting for her to show up and do her thing. Pictures were taken and autographs were sought. It was an usual time in our history. Miss Nation also campaigned against women wearing tight clothes! There’s a Wiki page for her out there I saw some years back.

Anyhow, all you need to understand Miss Nation is to find her picture. She was an old spinster and quite obviously an enemy of fun!

Marijuana has never caused an overdose whereas alcohol has laid waste to whole families and killed the alcoholic at the center of said families! Marijuana has been used as a healing herb for millenia and in the last 50 years been proven scientifically to have a myriad of health benefits. One of the most important uses is for reducing seizure rates, particularly in children, by 90%! And of course, ask the Diaz brothers and a host of other athletes who use it for its anti-inflammatory properties. The science behind the health benefits is indisputable and voluminous.

One of the largest studies into the health benefits of marijuana has been carried out for decades at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel by a Professor of Medicinal Chemistry by the name of Raphael Mechoulam. He’s one of the "founding fathers" of medical marijuana and his science is impossible to argue with; simply because it’s not rooted in the hysteria of Bible-thumping prohibitionists!

And if such folks do want to approach marijuana through a "moral" lens then they’ve got a real dilemma as marijuana was a gift from the Lord! It’s even documented in the Bible in the Book of Genesis, Chapter 9, Verse 3: "Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things." Also in the Book of Genesis, Chapter 1, Verses 29-31 where it states: "Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed which is upon the face of all the earth…"

But those are only a couple of examples from the Bible, there are many more mentions of such in the Good Book. Much of this is available to research online. Point being, it pretty much lays waste to the "moral argument" that many anti-marijuana types will fall back on when faced with the strong scientific findings that justify marijuana’s place in our society.

Nevertheless, as we’re finally seeing in the United States, marijuana legalization has already started to fall into place. It’s even legal in Washington DC now! So in 5 years or less, as many experts concur, the "devil weed with its roots in Hell" will soon be legal making all of this a moot point. On a side note, the "devil weed" quote is from a 1930’s propaganda film called "Reefer Madness" which, if you haven’t seen it, is a must-see film. Of course in our society today it’s become a hilarious comedy but in the time of prohibition it was presented to the public as a very serious film! Well worth grabbing a beer, sparking up a joint and watching, you’ll laugh endlessly.

Peace and Blood.

That’s all good but,

It is still on the banned substance list. If it is legalized it will remain on the banned list.

Relax

they are only asked to not get high the day of the fight…. that’s all…

You don’t know how metabolites work do you?

noup

not clearly, and pretty sure "not high only the day of the fight" was overboard…

Isn't MJ now legally available in Nevada?

Seems corrupt as hell.

War and Piss

God forbid someone smokes a little weed

After getting their face punched in for 15 minutes for bullshit pay
