Kelvin Gastelum and Sean Brady squared off in a Welterweight contest earlier tonight (Sat., Dec. 2, 2023) at UFC Austin inside Moody Center in Austin, Texas.

Gastelum stepped right to his opponent and fired a big overhand, but Brady used his aggression to clinch up. He was then able to press Gastelum to the fence, complete a double leg, and then take the back. Less than 90 seconds into the fight, Brady was on his opponent’s back with a body triangle locked in — that’s a pretty ideal start!

30 seconds later, Gastelum escaped out the back door, grabbed the head, and landed on top. Brady was back to his feet before long, and he managed to sting Gastelum with a right hand. Gastelum was looking a bit fatigued from the wrestling, and Brady landed another right followed by a takedown back into top position. Gastelum crawled to the fence but couldn’t free himself from Brady’s grasp. He spent the final minute of the round trapped beneath Brady.

Things weren’t looking great for the former Middleweight title challenger after five minutes.

An effortless takedown from Brady early in the second didn’t indicate that a change of fortunes was coming. Gastelum was stuck flat on his back in the center of the Octagon, looking frustrated. Brady advanced into mount smoothly. Gastelum bucked and tried to scramble, but Brady ran laps around him on the floor, transitioning between dominant positions beautifully. He didn’t do a ton of damage or come particularly close to a submission, but it was still a top-notch display of grappling ability for five entire minutes.

With a single round remaining, Gastelum needed a miracle.

Gastelum landed an early left hand upstairs, but before any momentum could be built, Brady ran him off his feet with a single leg. Moments later, Brady was back in mount, threatening an arm triangle choke. When Gastelum turned away, he transitioned into a kimura. Gastelum was trapped, and Brady put on the finishing touches by stepping over his head and cranking on his shoulder.

After some resistance, the tap came. It was the perfect cherry on top of the domination sundae! Brady was in total control from the first bell to the final moment, and hopefully, this win reminds fight fans that he’s still a top Welterweight contender. One loss to Belal Muhammad shouldn’t have derailed his reputation so badly!
