Sean Strickland fails to crack Top 5 in latest UFC rankings update

UFC Fight Night: Allen v Strickland Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) recently updated its official rankings in the wake of the UFC Vegas 47 mixed martial arts (MMA) event, which took place last Sat. night (Feb. 5, 2022) inside the promotion’s APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. That’s where streaking middleweight contender Sean Strickland continued his ascension through the 185-pound ranks, though his decision victory over “The Joker” was only good enough for one spot in this week’s official update, which comes at the expense of the struggling Hermansson.

Here’s how UFC compiles its official rankings:

Rankings were generated by a voting panel made up of media members. The media members were asked to vote for who they feel are the top fighters in the UFC by weight-class and pound-for-pound. A fighter is only eligible to be voted on if they are in active status in the UFC. A fighter can appear in more than one weight division at a time. The champion and interim champion are considered to be in the top positions of their respective divisions and therefore are not eligible for voting by weight-class. However, the champions can be voted on for the pound-for-pound rankings.

Take a look at what the latest rankings field looks like courtesy of UFC.com. Note: (+/- = movement in rankings, T = tie, *NR = Not previously ranked).

BLOCKBUSTER CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLEHEADER! Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) International Fight Week returns to T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Sat., July 2, 2022, capped by a stacked card headlined by a blockbuster championship double header. In UFC 276’s pay-per-view (PPV) main event, reigning Middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya, defends his crown against No. 2-ranked contender, Jared Cannonier. In the co-main event, Featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski, has his sights set on successfully defending his title once again against No. 1-seeded contender, Max Holloway, for the third (and likely final) time.

Don’t miss a single second of EPIC face-punching action!

You can expect these “official” rankings to change around this time next week, particularly in the middleweight division, as Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker — as well as Derek Brunson and Jared Cannonier — collide at the UFC UFC 271 pay-per-view (PPV) event on Feb. 12 inside Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
