Ion Cutelaba and Devin Clark faced off in a Light Heavyweight clash tonight (Sat., Sept. 18, 2021) at UFC Vegas 37 from UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada. In a smart showing, Cutelaba dominated the fight with his wrestling.

Clark opened up by immediately diving into a takedown, briefly securing the shot. Cutelaba popped back up, moving the fight into the clinch. Cutelaba used a frame to land some heavy knees and return to the center. Clark looked quick at distance, while Cutelaba was unusually measured. Cutelaba landed a heavy step knee to the mid-section. Cutelaba hid a right hand behind the double jab, and Clark hit the mat hard! “Brown Bear” was badly hurt, but he managed to stand back up briefly. Cutelaba dragged him back down and put in a hook. Still, Brown managed to avoid getting finished. He did well to prevent Cutelaba from teeing off, but that changed when Cutelaba slammed him back down, finding heavy punches underneath the armpit. For the final 30 seconds of the round, Cutelaba was dropping heavy punishment from an assortment of bad positions.

A brutal end to the round, but Clark did survive.

Clark returned to his low kick to start the second. Cutelaba timed a takedown well and landed in mount! Cutelaba advanced high into the armpits and started dropping nasty elbows. “The Hulk” continued his measured offense, picking his shots rather than getting really wild. Clark managed to escape to his feet with about 90 seconds remaining. Cutelaba got back on the shot and landed a pair of heavy knees. Clark was bleeding quite a bit as the second came to a close.

“Brown Bear” attacked a takedown early, landing a good punch on the break. Cutelaba returned with a slick trip back into top position — shockingly consistent wrestling from the Moldovan! An armbar attempt from Cutelaba saw Brown escape to his feet. Still, it didn’t take long for Cutelaba to score his seventh takedown of the fight. After a scramble, Clark scored top position with a minute left in the round! Clark didn’t land anything too devastating, but it was a nice moral victory in an otherwise dominant loss.

Can a patient, measured Cutelaba grow to become a contender? For the first time, “The Hulk” was consistent, and his gas tank held up quite well as a result. He won every round clearly and still nearly secured the finish, so hopefully this positive result encourages similar performance in the future.

Result: Ion Cutelaba defeats Devin Clark via unanimous decision (30-26, 29-26, 29-27)
