Jared Cannonier might be out longer than Kelvin Gastelum | UFC Vegas 34 medical suspensions

Jared Cannonier faces a potential six-month medical suspension in the aftermath of his Kelvin Gastelum fight at UFC Vegas 34, which took place this past weekend (Sat., Aug. 21, 2021) inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Cannonier (14-5) took a unanimous decision against Gastelum (17-8) in the five-round main event; however, “Killa Gorilla” could face a six-month medical suspension pending an x-ray on his right foot. And that is bad news, considering Cannonier is struggling to make ends meet and is/was looking to get paid like an “elite athlete” moving forward.

Nevertheless, other fighters who picked up six-month suspensions include Alexandre Pantoja, Brandon Royval and Josiane Nunes.

• Chase Sherman: Suspended until 09/21/21. No contact until 09/12/21 – Right foot and thumb pain.

• Brandon Royval: Must have an orbital CatScan. If positive, must have ENT doctor or maxillofacial surgeon clearance, or no-contest until 02/18/22. Minimum suspension no-contest until 09/12/21, no contact until 09/05/21.
• Austin Lingo: Suspended until 10/06/21. No contact until 09/21/21 – Bilateral lacerations near eyes.
• Luis Saldana: Must have left-foot and left-hand X-rays. If positive, must have orthopedic doctor clearance or no contest until 02/18/22. Minimum suspension no contest until 10/06/21, no contact until 09/21/21.
• Domingo Pilarte: Must have a left knee MRI. If positive, must have orthopedic doctor clearance or no contest until 02/18/22. Minimum suspension no contest until 09/21/21, no contact until 09/12/21.
• Josiane Nunes: Must have left foot x-ray. If positive, must have orthopedic doctor clearance or no contest until 02/18/22. Minimum suspension no contest until 09/12/21, no contact until 09/05/21.
• Bea Malecki: Suspended until 10/21/21. No contact until 10/06/21.
• Ignacio Bahamondez: Suspended until 10/06/21. No contact until 09/21/21 – Facial sutures.
• Roosevelt Roberts: Suspended until 10/21/21. No contact until 10/06/21.

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases. In addition, not all injuries are recorded during the post-fight examination and often times surface in follow-up tests.
