Francis Ngannou and Jon Jones may not have a date to fight each other in the cage, but that hasn’t stopped them from trading endless barbs across social media.
Jones hasn’t fought since his iffy Feb. 2020 decision win over Dominick Reyes at UFC 247. Given how controversial the judging was on that one (see scorecards here), an immediate rematch was likely to be next. But, instead, “Bones” decided to vacate the Light Heavyweight belt and start preparing for a move to heavyweight.
There’s no clear sign of when that debut a weight class up may happen — there seems to be a big chasm between the money Jon expects to be paid and what UFC is willing to pony up. Regardless, “Bones” continues to jab at new Heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou. Whether he’s coming out ahead in the exchanges is up to interpretation.
Jones kicked things off with some good ol’ fashioned America vs. the world talk. Now, Ngannou is firing back on all cylinders:
Please don't make me laugh !— Francis Ngannou (@francis_ngannou) May 1, 2021
When is the last time that you break somebody out? https://t.co/XpFZhrVLcp
You're a decision fighter @JonnyBones and you've barely won a fight lately.— Francis Ngannou (@francis_ngannou) May 1, 2021
But you're going to break me out
That “decision fighter” biz seemed to get Jones pretty animated:
A decision fighter? I carried the record for most submissions in the light heavyweight division for many years my friend. You are what we call a one trick pony @francis_ngannou every champion I’ve ever faced punched hard. I see right through you— BONY (@JonnyBones) May 1, 2021
I would rather be a decision fighter than a last for two rounds fighter ♂️— BONY (@JonnyBones) May 1, 2021
Jones may have the record for most subs in the 205-pound division, but his recent streak has indeed featured a lot of decisions: three of his past four bouts have gone the distance, with one resulting in a split decision and the aforementioned Reyes decision that many felt should have gone Dominick’s way.
Honestly @francis_ngannou I really respect you and your story. I really don’t feel the need to have to crush you in a verbal battle to do what I’ve done to everyone since 2011— BONY (@JonnyBones) May 1, 2021
Im just telling you now @francis_ngannou if you want to start this Internet talk, be sure to keep up. Most people that talk shit with me go quiet after a while.. Everyone’s going to be the first to smash Jon Jones, very popular theme— BONY (@JonnyBones) May 1, 2021
But ... Jones started it?
There you have it, Maniacs. How do you score this round of Jones vs. Ngannou on Twitter?
