Eddie Alvarez bails on Oscar De La Hoya boxing match — ‘It’s a dead issue’

“The Underground King” was so “put off” by the circus that was the Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren event that he’s no longer considering an Oscar De La Hoya boxing match.

Former UFC and Bellator MMA champion Eddie Alvarez, who now throws hands for ONE Championship in Singapore, needed less than a week to go from “crazy excited” to “put off” in regards to a boxing match against returning legend Oscar De La Hoya.

I guess those “talks” weren’t so “serious” after all.

“I would say it’s a dead issue for right now,” Alvarez said during the ONE on TNT IV media call (transcribed by MMA Fighting). “I feel like when we were saying yes to the Oscar thing, I felt like maybe I was making a decision too quickly that I just feel like this is my sport. This is what I’ve done my whole life and if you want a real fight, this is a fight. MMA is a fight. Boxing is a fifth of what we do. It’s a part of it. It’s not a fight.”

De La Hoya is planning a pay-per-view (PPV) return in July.

With his mind off the “sweet science” and back onto MMA, Alvarez can focus on his upcoming fight against Rae Yoon Ok on April 28 on TNT, a chance to rebound from his controversial “no contest” against Iuri Lapicus just a few weeks back.
