It is rare that former teammates fight for a UFC championship, but that’s exactly what we’re getting later tonight (Sat. Feb. 13, 2021) at UFC 258 live on ESPN+ PPV from inside UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada, as Kamaru Usman puts his UFC welterweight title on the line against Gilbert Burns.
While the welterweight matchup isn’t the most exciting collision on paper it still packs quite the punch. Usman is one of the most dominant champions in the sport today and currently looking to lock down his 13th-straight UFC win and third-straight title defense. Burns, on the other hand, is looking to improve his UFC welterweight record to 5-0 since moving up from 155 pounds in 2019.
Leading up to the clash of former teammates, Burns released his final training session with Usman earlier this week. The two have had enough time to train apart over the past year, but these sessions weren’t happening too long ago. It will be interesting to see whether Usman or Burns draw some sort of advantage from their time spent together in the gym.
Check out their final training session below:
Both welterweights are pretty evenly matched, but Usman would have to have the wrestling and top game advantage while “Durinho” comes in with the better punching power and submissions. It will be a fun fight for the 170-pound division and a bout that could make or break Usman’s legacy as one of the most dominant welterweight fighters ever.
