UFC lightweight contender Charles Oliveira is ranked No. 3 at 155 pounds after winning eight straight fights, including last December’s unanimous decision victory over ex-interim champion Tony Ferguson.
“Do Bronx” believes that streak should be enough to land him the next crack at the lightweight title, which is why he turned down a short-notice bout against Michael Chandler before telling Nate Diaz to pound sand.
No. 2-ranked Justin Gaethje, however, is not impressed.
“Sick of hearing Charles Oliveira deserves anything,” Gaethje wrote on Twitter. “Other than Tony, what the fuck has this dude done to get a shot at a title? Credit for stacking up dubs but that’s now how this works.”
Leon Edwards can attest to that.
It should be noted that Gaethje beat Ferguson to earn his lightweight title shot against Khabib Nurmagomedov. Heading into his “Eagle” fight, “The Highlight” was 5-2 in UFC with his other notable victory coming over a shopworn Donald Cerrone.
Unfortunately the lightweight division is still a disaster. Nurmagomedov claims to be retired but UFC President Dana White won’t vacate “The Eagle’s” strap. Then we have Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor talking about a trilogy while No. 4-ranked Chandler tries to work his way into the fold.
