Light work! Islam Makhachev submits Dan Hooker with ease | UFC 267

Dan Hooker apparently never met a fight or fighter that he didn’t like, accepting a last-minute bout against a man few of his peers want to mess with, No. 5-ranked Lightweight contender, Islam Makhachev, at UFC 267, which took place inside Etihad Arena on “Fight Island” in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Makhachev has been anointed the heir-apparent to former dominant 155-pound kingpin, Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was in the corner of Makhachev this afternoon.

That’s always quite a bit of added pressure for Makhachev, but you wouldn’t be able to tell, with the dominant Dagestani submitting Hooker via kimura in the first round (watch highlights).

BLOCKBUSTER WELTERWEIGHT REMATCH! Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Sat., Aug. 20, 2022, for the first time in more than five years, headlined by a blockbuster Welterweight championship bout that will see Kamaru Usman run it back with No. 2-ranked contender, Leon Edwards. In UFC 278’s pay-per-view (PPV) co-main event, No. 4-seeded Middleweight contender, Paulo Costa, aims to spoil the return of former 185-pound champion, Luke Rockhold. And last but not least, former Featherweight champion and all-time great, Jose Aldo, returns to Bantamweight action, too!

Don’t miss a single second of EPIC face-punching action!

It was pretty clear that Makhachev would look to take the fight to the ground as soon as possible, so Hooker was trying to keep him at bay with a piston-pumping jab. But, it only took 40 seconds for Makhachev to get him to the floor and into half guard. He appeared to be angling for an arm triangle, but the fence prohibited the maneuver. Hooker held on for dear life, locking down Makhachev’s leg so he couldn’t secure full mount. He jumped to side control and began cranking on a kimura. Hooker was in trouble, he tried to defend, but Makhachev had it twisted behind his back and it was close to snapping him bone in half. Hooker had no choice but to verbally submit.

Makhachev celebrated his ninth consecutive win with Hasbulla in the center if the Octagon.

Now it’s only a matter of time before he is competing for a world title in the footsteps of his mentor.
