And we have to admit, Paul does currently exist in a profitable space: both beloved and hated by legions of teenagers and young adults due to his YouTube fame, and now legitimized to a degree in the combat sports world due to his co-main event fight (watch highlights) on Mike Tyson’s last pay-per-view (PPV).
That doesn’t make his fight with Ben Askren any less ridiculous. Paul has carefully selected the highest profile mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter with the worst stand-up possible, and now the two will duel it out in a boxing ring. If not for a knee injury, it might have been Conor McGregor’s jiu-jitsu coach Dillon Danis in there. Which all seemed pretty ridiculous to former UFC Middleweight champion, Michael Bisping.
A YouTuber, a wrestler and a jujitsu guy talking big about boxing is an insult to the sweet science. https://t.co/6xCAbFx2yx— michael (@bisping) January 27, 2021
That comment didn’t sit well with Danis, who seems salty about losing his big money paycheck to Askren.
stay in the commentary booth where it’s safe otherwise you will need more than sweet science to fix what i would do to your other eye in a boxing ring you twat https://t.co/kB5SrItPp4— Dillon Danis (@dillondanis) January 27, 2021
Unfortunately for Danis, no one told him he shouldn’t engage in a battle of words with Bisping on the best of days, let alone when the ill-tempered Brit is recovering from neck surgery.
“The Count’s” response was just brutal ...
Big words for an unproven fighter. The 2 ,yes only 2 fighters you’ve faced have records of 2-5 and 2-4 . Please for the love of god, shut the fuck up and stop embarrassing yourself. Also you had your mma debut in 2018, it’s 2021, 3 years 2 fights? Go shine Conor’s shoes u loser https://t.co/VOmrbR3Cfm— michael (@bisping) January 28, 2021
Oof! That’s a 10-7 round right there. We’d call it a pure finish, but Bisping doesn’t seem done with Danis.
Imagine being so insecure about your own fight career which is actually none existent that you have to constantly take shots at fighters outside of the promotion you’re in so you get clout and stay relevant. https://t.co/TYHMpZGtxh— michael (@bisping) January 28, 2021
I’m bored recovering from surgery so ridiculing him brings me great pleasure https://t.co/oosGxiXtBt— michael (@bisping) January 28, 2021
So while the Paul vs. Askren fight is ridiculous and Danis is coming off like a pretty lame orbiter, at least we’re getting to watch Paul and Danis getting every bit of disrespect they’re throwing out toward the MMA community revisited upon them tenfold.
