UFC 257 results: Michael Chandler flattens Dan Hooker in sensational Octagon debut

New, comments

Former Bellator MMA Lightweight champion, Michael Chandler, was out to prove that he was “no Ben Askren,” making his long-awaited Octagon debut tonight (Sat., Jan 23, 2021) against No. 6-ranked contender, Dan Hooker, in UFC 257’s pay-per-view (PPV) co-main event from inside Ethiad Arena on “Fight Island” in Abu Dhabi.

Chandler was essentially thrown right into the deep end — Hooker has been with UFC for almost six years, compiling a 10-5 record that features a knockout win over current No. 1-ranked Welterweight contender, Gilbert Burns. And it didn’t faze him one bit, hunting Hooker from the jump and finishing him off with a brutal barrage of strikes in the opening round.

Chandler put the pressure on early, looking to cut off the cage and close the distance on the much longer Hooker, who got the action started with several low kicks. Chandler appears to be a little frustrated chasing Hooker around the cage, lunging in with body shots and a nice one upstairs. Hooker landed a nice low kick, but then Chandler exploded with a huge left hook upstairs. Hooker crumbled to the canvas and tried to grab an ankle, but Chandler opened up with about a dozen hard shots into the left ear of Hooker, who was turtled up and in a very bad spot. The referee gave him more than enough time to recover — perhaps too much — before eventually rescuing the Kiwi from additional abuse.

What a debut! Hopefully, Khabib was watching.
