Despite just two wins in her last five fights dating back to 2015, Paige VanZant has been very outspoken about her lack of compensation and desire to test the mixed martial arts (MMA) free agent market. So, naturally, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) matched her up with Amanda Ribas, who has been dominant (3-0) since making her Octagon debut back in June 2019.
Indeed, VanZant — the biggest underdog on the entire card — had her back up against the wall tonight (Sat., July 11, 2020) at UFC 251, which took place inside Flash Forum on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Nevertheless, the oddsmakers had this one pegged, as Ribas made quick work of VanZant with a first round armbar finish.
Ribas was the aggressor in the early going, stalking VanZant and looking to trap her somewhere up against fence. She connected with a kick and some nice knees before hip-tossing VanZant down to the canvas. Ribas had her in a headlock at the bottom of the fence, angling for position as blood trickled out of her nose. She was able to roll to VanZant’s back then transition to an armbar. VanZant squirmed and defended at first, but then Ribas was able to go belly down and crank it until VanZant tapped.
It was a fast and clinical finish from Ribas, whose star continues to rise. And using VanZant — who may or may not be done with UFC — as a stepping stone will be a huge feather in her cap moving forward.
