Surprise! Urijah Faber crashes UFC on ESPN 8 weigh ins, hits alternate lightweight mark (video)

New, comments

Longtime UFC bantamweight title contender Urijah Faber, who also competed at featherweight in his illustrious combat sports career, tipped the scale at 153.5 on Friday ahead of the May 13 event on ESPN, taking place inside VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida.

Faber is not booked to compete at UFC on ESPN 8 and there are no lightweight bouts on the docket; however, there is an outside chance that Song Yadong gets pulled from the event due to visa issues, giving Marlon Vera the chance to meet Faber at the heavier weight.

“Song was supposed to be cleared, but they were having last-minute visa issues,” Faber told ESPN. “So there were a bunch of wild scenarios being thrown around: jets to other countries, etc., to get issues cleared. I told UFC worst-case scenario I would be out there and could step in. So everything was good to go and then something came up. There was a scramble and a panic last night, so I cut some weight to get under 155 to possibly be a last-minute replacement. Sounds like it is resolved, but I’m cleared to fight just in case.”

Nothing is official at this time, but it should be noted that Marvin Vettori, who lost his Karl Roberson bout at UFC Jacksonville earlier this week, also weighed in as an alternate. His light heavyweight mark of 203.5 makes him eligible for heavyweight (or a heavier middleweight) since tomorrow’s line up does not feature anyone from the 205-pound weight class. will deliver LIVE round-by-round, blow-by-blow coverage of the entire UFC on ESPN 8 fight card RIGHT HERE, starting with the ESPN/ESPN+ “Prelims” undercard bouts at 6 p.m. ET, followed by the ESPN/ESPN+ main card start time at 9 p.m. ET.
