Latest UFC rankings: Justin Gaethje debuts on pound-for-pound list, Dominick Cruz fails to crack Top 10

New, 28 comments

Cruz also claims the UFC rankings panel smelled like alcohol and cigarettes.

After no MMA events for more than a month, UFC had a lot of catching up to do last Sat. night (May 9, 2020) and the UFC 249 PPV fight card delivered in spades. Not only did the promotion crown Justin Gaethje its new interim lightweight champion, the Jacksonville offering welcomed the comebacks of former champions Dominick Cruz and Fabricio Werdum, who also returned to the official UFC rankings.

Just probably not in the slots they were hoping for.

“The Dominator” — ranked No. 1 in the world at the time of his injury departure in early 2017 — returned at No. 12, thanks to his co-main event loss to reigning bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo. As for “Vai Cavalo,” a former heavyweight titleholder, he settled for No. 15 after falling to Aleksei Oleinik (No. 10).

Here’s how the rankings work, courtesy of UFC.com:

Rankings were generated by a voting panel made up of media members. The media members were asked to vote for who they feel are the top fighters in the UFC by weight-class and pound-for-pound. A fighter is only eligible to be voted on if they are in active status in the UFC. A fighter can appear in more than one weight division at a time. The champion and interim champion are considered to be in the top positions of their respective divisions and therefore are not eligible for voting by weight-class. However, the champions can be voted on for the pound-for-pound rankings.

Take a look at what the latest rankings field looks like courtesy of UFC.com. Note: (+/- = movement in rankings, T = tie, *NR = Not previously ranked).

There you have it.

The UFC rankings will likely stay this way — despite Wednesday night’s event on ESPN+ — until after the weekend, as we still have UFC on ESPN 8 to get through on Saturday and the panel typically votes once per week.
