The combat sports world has lost a great one, as TMZ Sports reports that Roger Mayweather has passed away at the age of 58. While the cause of his death was not revealed, reports have stated that Roger’s health had been deteriorating over the last several years.
While best known for being Floyd Mayweather’s uncle and trainer, Roger had a well-established boxing career of his own, taking part in 72 professional boxing matches and winning two division titles along the way. Over the course of his nearly 20-year combat sports career, Mayweather took on some of the best in the history of the sport such as Vinny Pazienza, Pernell Whittaker and Julio Cesar Chavez (twice).
After hanging up his gloves for good, Roger turned to the training side of the sport, helping Floyd become the star he is today, leading him to multiple titles along the way. Over the course of Floyd’s career, however, Roger had to relinquish head trainer duties to Floyd Sr. from time-to-time. That said, Roger was always by Floyd Jr.’s side throughout the remainder of his career.

Floyd issued a statement shortly following the news via The Athletic’s Lance Pugmire:
“My uncle was one of the most important people in my life inside and outside of the ring. Roger was a great champion and one of the best trainers in boxing,” he said. “Unfortunately, his health was failing him for several years and now he can finally rest in peace. Roger meant the world to me, my father Floyd Sr., my uncle Jeff, everyone in and around the Mayweather Boxing Gym and the entire boxing world.
“It is a terrible loss for all of us,” he continued. “We are thankful for all the love and well-wishes we have already received as word traveled about Roger’s passing. It helps me to see that he was able to touch so many people through his life in boxing, because he gave so much to the sport, which was his first and longtime love.”
The loss is another tough blow for Floyd, who recently lost his ex-girlfriend and the mother of three of his children, Josie Harris, just last week after she was found dead in her vehicle outside of her home in Valencia, California.
