Tyson Fury returned to boxing’s top spot last night (Sat., Feb. 22, 2020) live on ESPN+ PPV from inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, when he destroyed WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder via seventh-round TKO in their anticipated main event rematch.
Early pressure and big shots landed by Fury in the first, including a few sharp jabs. Wilder didn’t offer much as he was backpedaling for most of the round. More jabs from Fury followed in the second. Wilder returned with a big right and started to advance, but “Gypsy King” was there for two big rights to end the frame.
The third round saw Fury land a right hand behind his jab and then connected with a short upper cut inside. Wilder looked a little bothered before pushing forward and bringing the fight to fury. Out of nowhere, Fury blasted Wilder with a massive right that sent “Bronze Bomber” to the canvas. Fury rushed Wilder when he returned to his feet and forced him to the ground again. In the fourth, Fury changed levels and landed big hooks to the body. Wilder covered up and it left him susceptible to more of Fury’s long punches.
There was a huge combination for Fury to start the fifth round that nearly lifted Wilder out of his shoes. Fury kept busy as Wilder held on for a break. The pursuit continued and Fury went back to the body to score yet another knockdown on Wilder. Moments after the fight returned to the feet the referee deducted one point from Fury after he landed an upper cut on an official break.
Between rounds, the camera showed blood coming out of Wilder’s ear, indicating a likely rupture of the ear drum.
More punches to the body by Fury early into the sixth that staggered Wilder again. The action hit the ropes and “Gypsy King” landed a combination that forced another tie up. A big left by Fury backed Wilder up again in the seventh as the WBC champ struggled to stay on his feet. Wilder fell into the corner and Fury timed one final combination that finally did “Bronze Bomber” in and forced Wilder’s corner to throw the towel in.
