UFC Fight Night 168 results: Dan Hooker splits Paul Felder after grueling back-and-forth battle

Dan Hooker and Paul Felder faced each other in a Lightweight clash tonight (Sat., Feb. 22, 2020) at UFC Fight Night 168, which took place inside Spark Center in Auckland, New Zealand. Following a blood-and-guts war, Hooker was named the victor.

Hooker opens with a pair of calf kicks. Another calf kick knocks Felder from his feet, but then he lands a big left hook! Hooker continues to work the calf at a brutal rate. Hook-cross lands hard for Felder. Felder checks a kick, eats a jab. Jab-calf kick lands well for Hooker, who just ducks a left hook. Felder feints toward the lead leg, lands a left hook. Felder snaps a left kick into the mid-section. Cross to the body-left hook to the jaw lands well for Felder, but Hooker fires back. Spin kick glances off the chest of Hooker. The fight moves to the clinch, where Felder lands a knee before getting jammed into the fence. Jab-calf kick-jab scores for Hooker. Felder lands a cross at the bell.

Felder’s eye looks nearly swollen shut at the start of the second. Felder lands an inside low kick and left hook. Hooker stabs at the belly with a kick. Jab lands for Hooker, but Felder digs to the inside of the leg. Felder attacks the calf himself! ANother hard calf kick scores for Hooker, who is managing range well. Felder tries to plant with a combination, eats a cross, then lands a left hook in return. Sharp jab from Hooker again sets up the calf kick. Hooker counters a spin by grabbing the back clinch and threatening the standing back take. Felder is eventually able to shake him off. The two trade calf kicks. Both men land left hooks. Felder is beginning to find more success with his own low kicks, then lands a spin kick to the mid-section. Hooker attempts a knee, eats some body shots. Spinning back fist and left hook lands for Felder. Hooker returns fire with a pair of straight shots, just ducks a spinning elbow. The two trade until the bell.

The two trade kicks in the opening minute, but nothing lands too significantly until Felder sticks his foe with a clean jab. Felder digs a right to the body. Hooker lands a jab, but eats a hard outside low kick. Solid uppercut lands for Felder. Another check hook scores for Felder, who then absorbs a low kick. Felder’s left hand finds its way to the chin twice. Calf kick scores for “The Irish Dragon,” then a right hand. Felder lands a jab, eats a counter combination. A Felder low kick is checked, and Hooker lands some follow up punches. Good jab from the Kiwi. Another. The two trade chopping low kicks. Hooker lands a string of quick jabs once more. Felder lands a low kick and right hand, eats three jabs in the process. Solid spin kick lands for Felder. Hooker lands a Southpaw cross, absorbs a counter shot. Felder attempts a takedown attempt, but it’s stuffed. Felder lands a couple glancing knees and an elbow before the round ends.

Two hard low kicks from Felder begin the fourth round. The two trade, but it’s Felder landing the bigger punches early. Felder sneaks a right hand to the jaw, and both men land left hooks. Sharp jab from Hooker finds its target yet again. The Kiwi then goes to the calf twice. Hook-cross cracks the jaw of Hooker, who wobbles momentarily! Hooker changes levels into a takedown, but Felder stops the shot. Felder breaks the clinch with an elbow. Hooker stings his foe with a jab, attempts another back take from the clinch. Felder fights him off. Clean 1-2 snaps back the head of Hooker. Another right crashes into Hooker’s jawline. Hook-cross again works for Felder. Hooker attempts another takedown event, but it’s stuffed along the fence. Felder lands a pair of elbows with his back to the fence. Hooker controls in the clinch to the bell, but he’s unable to land any major strikes or takedown.

Hooker lands a jab to start the fifth and final round, but he eats a low kick. Another inside low kick lands for Felder. Hooker throws a low kick, eats a right hand. Hooker scores a solid right of his own. Big right hand nearly buckles Hooker’s knees. Jab scores for “The Hangman.” Overhand lands clean for Felder. Hooker attempts a takedown and nearly gets it, but Felder is able to escape to the fence and return to the clinch. Hooker lands a couple straight shots as Felder over-swings. Felder scores a right hand soon afterward. Good jab lands for Felder. Hook-cross again finds a home for Felder. Long cross lands for Hooker, then a stinging jab. Felder returns the favor with a jab, then wobbles his foe with an overhand. The two trade jabs. Huge right hand lands for Felder, prompting a takedown from Hooker. This one scores! Felder inches his way to the fence and begins wall-walking, but Hooker is able to maintain top position. Felder gets up with 10 seconds remaining, and the two trade small clinch shots until the bell sounds.

This was about the very definition of a war of attrition. Hooker’s early calf kicks were hugely effective, but Felder returned the favor with brutal low kicks of his own later in the fight. Hooker’s jab did a lot of damage on the outside, but Felder was able to score bigger power punches overall.

After five rounds, the judges ultimately scored the ultra-competitive bout for Dan Hooker.

Result: Dan Hooker defeats Paul Felder via split-decision (47-48, 48-47, 47-48)
