The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight division has a new contender, as former Cage Warriors two-division champion, Mason Jones, is set to make his Octagon debut at UFC Fight Island 8 on Jan. 20, 2021, on “Fight Island” in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Jones will face Mike Davis in a 155-pound showdown on the ESPN+-streamed event, according to MMA Fighting.
Jones is undefeated (10-0), coming off two highly-impressive wins in 2020, defeating Joe McColgan at Cage Warriors 113 via first round technical knockout to win the vacant strap at Lightweight. Six months later, he won the vacant Welterweight title, knocking out Adam Proctor, also in the opening frame.
All told, Jones, 25, has only gone the distance three times in his professional mixed martial arts (MMA) career. Davis, on the other hand, is coming off a knockout performance over Thomas Gifford back in October, giving him his third win in last four outings, his first inside the Octagon.
Earlier today, it was announced that UFC Fight Island 8 had lost its main event after Khamzat Chimaev was forced to bow out of the headlining act against Leon Edwards. With plenty of time to shuffle the deck, the promotion has yet to make an official announcement regarding Edwards.
As it stands, the co-main event will see Neil Magny face off against Michael Chiesa, though either one of those two men could step in to face “Rocky” in the headlining act.
