Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President, Dana White, recently announced the kickoff to the promotion’s 2021 slate with a triple-header that will see three events go down on “Fight Island,” beginning with UFC Fight Island 7 on Jan. 16, UFC Fight Island 8 on Weds., Jan. 20, and then culminating with UFC 257 on Jan. 23, 2021.
The mid-week event on Jan. 16 will feature a hard-hitting Welterweight bout between Khamzat Chimaev and Leon Edwards. Now, ESPN’s Brett Okamoto is reporting that the promotion has booked another pivotal fight at 170 pounds as Neil Magny will face Michael Chiesa on the ESPN+-streamed event.
Chiesa is 3-0 since moving up to Welterweight, defeating Carlos Condit, Diego Sanchez and Rafael dos Anjos. Prior to that, “Maverick” was on a two-fight skid in the Lightweight division. Magny, meanwhile, is also the owner of a three-fight win streak, scoring big victories over Li Jingliang, Robbie Lawler and Anthony Rocco Martin.
Should anything happen to either Chimaev or Edwards to where they can’t compete come fight night, it’s safe to assume one of these two men will serve as the replacement.
