Cory McKenna and Kay Hansen faced off in a women’s Strawweight clash tonight (Sat., Nov. 14, 2020) at UFC Vegas 14 from inside UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada. Following a very competitive fight, McKenna was awarded the decision nod.

The two traded jabs to open the bout, and it didn’t take long for the exchanges to start. McKenna found a 1-2, ate a right hand. The fight moved into the clinch, where McKenna pressed her foe into the fence. Hansen threatened with an overhook throw then attacked a single leg, but the bout remained standing. McKenna scored with a left hook. Hansen dug a body kick. Back in the clinch, McKenna reversed position and attacked the single to no avail. Hansen threatened a guillotine and used it to land some knees. Hansen jumped onto the back smoothly. McKenna finished the round by punching her opponent in the face from back mount.

McKenna started the second with jabs. Hansen landed a good left hook. Hansen clinched up and searched for the body lock takedown, but it isn’t there. Hansen scored with a nice body kick then a good knee. McKenna landed a good right hand over the top. Another clean knee scored from the clinch. Hansen timed a takedown well, and it took some adjustments, but she finished the shot. Hansen immediately jumped on the back and attacked the neck. It looked close, but McKenna escaped and landed in top position. McKenna landed some shots from within the full guard and controlled top position for the final 90 seconds of the second round.

McKenna landed a sharp jab early in the third, absorbed a snapping body kick. Clean jab landed for Hansen. The two traded right hands. Hansen timed another double leg beautifully and finished it into half guard. Hansen began bleeding and held top position tightly. McKenna back to full guard, scored some heavy elbows from her back. Hansen attacked an arm triangle and used it to take mount. McKenna rolled into top position. She finished the round there, landing punches.

This was an ultra close fight, as the two women traded punches and positions at a pretty equal rate. However, the judges unanimously decided on McKenna as the winner, perhaps on the strength of reversals in the final two rounds.

Result: Cory McKenna defeats Kay Hansen via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
