Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, who is expected to vacate his title after retiring from mixed martial arts (MMA), broke his foot roughly two weeks before his UFC 254 pay-per-view (PPV) title fight against Justin Gaethje earlier this month on “Fight Island” in Abu Dhabi.
And now he’s got the pictures on social media to prove it.
Fortunately for fight fans — and unfortunately for Gaethje — the injury was not enough to bounce “The Eagle” from the UFC 254 headliner, where he unified the division titles by submitting “The Highlight” in the second stanza.
If and Nurmagomedov rides off into the sunset, the promotion will need to scare up a couple of lightweight contenders to compete for the vacant strap, and as of this writing, former champion Conor McGregor and top contender Dustin Poirier are the leading candidates.
