Teofimo Lopez Jr. (16-0, 12 KOs) pulled off a monster upset last night (Sat., Oct. 17, 2020) live on ESPN/ESPN+ from inside MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, when he defeated Vasiliy Lomachenko (14-2, 10 KOs) via unanimous decision in one of the most anticipated boxing events of the year.
As a result, Lopez walked away with the WBA (Super), WBO, IBF and The Ring lightweight titles all wrapped around his waist.
Lopez took early control with solid punches to the body. Lomachenko returned favor in the second round with some power combinations. The third round saw Lopez go back to the body and steal momentum. Lopez would throw more and land more punches against “Matrix” over the next few rounds.
Lomachenko seemed to come alive in the sixth round but Lopez closed the frame out with a timely uppercut and a straight right hand. “Matrix” found a little more offense in the seventh as he tried to claw his way back on the scorecards. Lopez regained some control in the eighth with some gorgeous right hands, but Lomachenko rushed in for some combinations inside that seemed to stifle Teofimo.
Trying to come back in the fight Lomachenko opened up his offense in the later rounds. “Matrix” advanced and launched punches in bunches, but Lopez was able to avoid serious trouble while launching more shots to the body and counter power attacks. Lomachenko really came alive in the 11th as he blasted Lopez with 19 total power punches. Lopez came back in the final round and unloaded power punches up top and whipping combinations to the body, which left a lasting impression in the judges’ eyes.
