The second major UFC event of the new year will go down at UFC 247 on Feb. 8 live on ESPN+ PPV from inside Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, as Jon Jones defends his light heavyweight title against undefeated contender Dominick Reyes in the headliner.
Not to be forgotten is a co-main event clash between reigning UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko and surging contender Katlyn Chookagian. The bout will be the third time Shevchenko is defending her 125-pound crown after taking out Joanna Jędrzejczyk back in 2018 to win the vacant belt.
While Jones vs. Reyes is the main attraction and for good reason, Shevchenko has quickly turned into one of the most dominant fighters in the sport today and a champion more than capable of producing everlasting results inside of the Octagon. At the end of the day, “Bullet” has only lost to current UFC women’s bantamweight and featherweight champion Amanda Nunes since her promotional inception in 2015.
In effort to shed some light on Shevchenko’s flyweight takeover, UFC has released arguably her greatest Octagon outing to date in advance to her upcoming title defense next weekend. The footage, which can be seen in the above video player, shows Shevchenko’s UFC 238 title defense opposite veteran contender Jessica Eye. After a fairly uneventful first round, Shevchenko was able to launch a perfectly-timed kick that slammed into Eye’s head and instantly put her out. It was quite incredible and one of the best finishes of 2019.
Only time will tell if Shevchenko is able to produce similar results against a rangy fighter like Chookagian, who has only lost via split decision throughout he 15-fight professional career.
