I can’t be the only one who finds it funny that UFC is celebrating the “insane star power” of Conor McGregor at a time when his fighting future is uncertain. Perhaps we need to be reminded now that “Notorious” competes so infrequently and was last seen tapping out to Khabib Nurmagomedov.
So before I get accused of acting like a McGregor hater, let’s get some things on the table. The power-punching Irishman is the biggest star in MMA and is unquestionably one of the greatest fighters of our generation.
Nobody wins two division titles by accident.
But if you want to talk about his mainstream appeal, the kind of global reach McGregor has been able to achieve — paving the way for this — we also have to recognize that it would not have been possible without Floyd Mayweather.
Who in many ways, passed the proverbial torch.
Aside from his undefeated record, “Money” changed the way combat sports athletes were paid and fighting Mayweather on pay-per-view (PPV) was like winning the lottery. There would be no “red panty night” without him.
And perhaps no reason to release this video.
