Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos turned in a throwback performance last night (Sat., Mar. 9, 2019) at UFC on ESPN+ 4 from inside the Intrust Bank Arena in Wichita, Kansas, when he put a stop to Derrick Lewis via second-round TKO. It was the first time “Black Beast” has been finished by strikes since Mart Hunt did him in back in 2017.
While both men did early damage with heavy kicks and counter punches, it was a spinning kick to the body by “Cigano” that nearly stopped Lewis in his tracks. “Black Beast” came out firing in the second in order to end the fight as quickly as possible, but dos Santos was the one who landed the biggest strike. A JDS right hand hurt Lewis and forced him to cover up. The former UFC champion landed heavy upper cuts and combinations inside before the referee stepped in for the stoppage.

With this performance, dos Santos locks down his third-straight win and immediately catapults himself to the top of the UFC’s heavyweight division. Contenders like Stipe Miocic and Francis Ngannou may deserve a shot at current champion Daniel Cormier before JDS does, but the Brazilian has quickly regained any divisional momentum he may have lost.
