If at first you don’t succeed, go on a six-fight losing streak and try again.
Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight champion BJ Penn, who also held gold at 155 pounds, will try for his first win in over eight years when he collides with Clay Guida at the upcoming UFC 237 pay-per-view (PPV) event on Sat., May 11, 2019 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
That’s according to a report from MMA Fighting.
Penn (16-13-2) flirted with retirement back in 2014, walking away from the Octagon when Frankie Edgar took him to the cleaners. The shopworn “Prodigy,” now 40, reemerged three years later to more of the same, losing three consecutive fights and looking old in the process.
Guida (34-18) is no spring chicken himself. The 37 year-old “Carpenter” is coming off a submission loss to Charles Oliveira last June. Neither fighter is ranked in the Top 15 and I don’t expect the outcome at UFC 237 to be enough to change that.
UFC 237 is expected to be headlined by the strawweight title fight pitting reigning division champion, Rose Namajunas, against top 115-pound title contender, Jessica Andrade (details). Elsewhere on the card, Jose Aldo continues his march toward the featherweight title at the expense of streaking contender, Alex Volkanovski.
Stay tuned for more UFC 237 fight card announcements in the coming weeks.
