Jon Jones made it look easy last night (Sat., Mar. 2, 2019) at UFC 235 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, when he methodically dissected Anthony Smith over the course of five rounds to retain his UFC light heavyweight title.
The champion opened up the first round with nasty spinning kicks to the body and hard kicks to the calf. Jones did whiff on swooping power punches but avoided a slick head kick by Smith. Jones would eventually pin “Lionheart” along the cage and launched shoulders into his face.
Smith was able to land a good counter right hand in the second that busted up Jones’ left eye. It didn’t matter, though, as Jones quickly came back with more kicks to the body and an eventual spinning elbow. More kicks to the legs, body, and head by “Bones” followed. It was more of Jones in the third round when the champion landed a nasty knee inside while working Smith along the cage. A slamming takedown lead to top control for Jones and some peppering ground-and-pound followed.
More body work for Jones came in the fourth, as well as uppercut elbows inside. Jones took Smith down and quickly worked to his back where he landed hard punches and elbows at will. Jones followed that up with nasty knees to the ribs and stomach. Unfortunately, Jones landed an illegal knee to Smith as he was returning to his feet. “Lionheart” eventually recovered and decided to continue to fight. Jones was docked two points.
The fifth and final frame saw Smith unload early and try to land his overhand right. Jones avoided them all and moved in to lock “Lionheart” up. More shoulder bumps followed as “Bones” scored in bunches in the clinch. From there, the champion cruised to the final bell and hoisted his light heavyweight strap in yet another dominant victory.
