Jon Jones vs Stipe Miocic in July being teased by ‘Bones’ on Twitter

New, comments

“I feel like Stipe is relatively unknown to the general public. It wouldn’t even be a real ‘superfight’ in my opinion. I think a lot of MMA fans would be super excited about, but the general public wouldn’t care about that fight.” —Jon Jones, July 2017

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President, Dana White, previously told mixed martial arts (MMA) fans that he was planning to book Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic for the UFC 218 pay-per-view (PPV) event in Chicago, until “Bones” blew up his United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) drug test and got sent to the sidelines.

Sounds like the bout is back in play, based on this latest tweet from Jones.

The fight made sense at the time and would have been contested for Miocic’s heavyweight title. Now, it sounds more like a vanity project for “Bones,” and would require top light heavyweight contender, Thiago Santos, to twiddle his thumbs until the champion returned to his rightful weight class.

Unless he won and fought the winner of Daniel Cormier vs. Brock Lesnar.

I can understand the “DC” trilogy because it gives Cormier his chance to retire with a win over his arch nemesis, while allowing Jones to join the promotion’s “champ champ” club. Not that we’ve never seen a champion move up to fight a non-champion (Anderson Silva did it twice), but I’m not sure this is a fight that does anything for me as a fan.

I dunno, maybe I just suck.

Nothing is official at this time, of course, and Jones might just be trolling for attention. But you know what they say about smoke/fire and let’s face it, nobody except those closest to “Marreta” would be overly butthurt about the booking.

Let’s just hope those damn picograms don’t get in the way.

*Update* Looks like Stipe Miocic is down...
