Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight, Vitor Belfort, is putting his retirement on hold to try his luck under the ONE Championship banner in Singapore, joining the likes of fellow UFC exports Demetrious Johnson, Sage Northcutt, and Eddie Alvarez, among others.
“Vitor is hands down, one of the biggest names in mixed martial arts,” ONE Chairman Chatri Sityodtong said. “He is a legend across the world, and we are thrilled to have him as ONE expands into South America. A World Champion in multiple weight divisions, Vitor is a massive addition to our ever-growing roster of ONE Championship elite athletes. I cannot wait to see his explosive power and his exciting knockout finishes inside the ONE cage.”
Belfort (26-14, 1 NC) could certainly use a change of scenery, having been finished in his last four losses. I’m not sure what “The Phenom” — who turns 42 in April — has left in the tank at this stage of career, but he certainly sounds eager to fight.
Against an all-time boxing great.
“One fight I’d really love is me against Roy Jones Jr.,” Belfort told MMA Fighting. “Roy, wherever you are, I wanna come challenge you for boxing match but with this condition: I’m gonna be able to dirty box with you.”
A date for Belfort’s in-cage debut has yet to be determined.
