“You know what they say, ‘to beat the best you’ve got to be the best’, and the best is ‘Blessed,’ baby.” — Max Holloway

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight contender, Dustin Poirier, submitted Max Holloway in the Hawaiian’s Octagon debut as part of the UFC 143: “Condit vs. Diaz” pay-per-view (PPV) event way back in 2012.

The chances of history repeating itself?

Not that good, according to the online sports books, which have Holloway listed as the -275 favorite for his “Diamond” do-over, taking place in the UFC 236 main event this April in Atlanta, Georgia. Poirier is the betting underdog at +215.

A lot has chanced since their first go-round. Holloway (20-3) would need a handful of bouts to grow as a fighter, but in the wake of his unanimous decision loss to Conor McGregor, something clicked and sent Holloway on a violent rampage throughout the featherweight division.

The result is 13 straight wins, 10 stoppages, and a division title.

As for Poirier (24-5), he struggled to stay consistent, putting together a couple of win streaks before wasting them with an ill-timed loss. That prompted a move to lightweight, where the reinvigorated “Diamond” has remained unbeaten in his previous five fights.

Which includes gnarly finishes in his last three.

Holloway and Poirier will collide for the interim title, created when reigning lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, took himself out of action until November. Of course, they had a little help from Tony Ferguson, who is done wasting his time with substitute straps.
