Demian Maia and Lyman Good faced each other in a welterweight clash tonight (Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019) at UFC Fight Night 144: “Assuncao vs. Moraes 2,” inside Northeast Olympic Training Center in Fortaleza, Brazil. If you don’t have ESPN+, you can sign up here for a seven-day free trial. Maia had lost three straight against the division’s strongest wrestlers, but did he still have the goods at 41 to defeat a dangerous power puncher in Lyman Good?
Good came out looking shredded, a strong contrast to Maia’s understated physique. They touched gloves. Maia backed Good up to the fence, shot in, and wrestled Good down. Good popped back up, and stayed fighting, but Maia clung on like static, and when he got up, Maia took his back and locked up a rear-naked choke attempt. Good stood, wearing the Brazilian like a backpack. Good fought the hands. Good stayed composed, but he couldn’t shake off the persistent Maia and eventually, Maia sunk in the choke and forced him to tap! Great win for Demian Maia, who’s still got it.
Maia, always humble in victory and defeat, said afterwards that this is always his strategy, but gave credit to Good for being a ‘very tough’ opponent. In regards to retirement, he said he still has two fights left in his contract, and he might retire after that, but ‘we’ll see’. He also took the time to ‘send a big hug’ to the family of two of his friends who departed too early.
Official result: Demian Maia def. Lyman Good via submission (rear-naked choke) at 2:38 of round 1.
