Anderson Silva wants Nick Diaz rematch at UFC 237 on May 11 in Curitiba

New, comments

Anderson Silva may have come up short against Israel Adesanya in the main event of last night’s UFC 234 pay-per-view (PPV) event in Melbourne, Australia (see it), but the former Middleweight champion of the world didn’t go out as easy as many expected.

Indeed, “Silva and Adesanya put on a show, engaging for 15 minutes of action that pretty much saw the fight even going into the final round. Though “The Spider” didn’t do enough to earn the nod, he showed he’s far from done. In fact, during the post-fight presser (see it), the Brazilian bomber expressed his desire to make a fairly quick turnaround.

And he has a particular name in mine for his next opponent.

“The last time I tried to fight in Curitiba, I had a problems and I take care of it very fast but I come out the card. Now I have the chance to fight in my city where everything start,” said Silva.

“I talked to Ed and my team, and I think maybe it makes sense to fight me and Nick Diaz in Curitiba. Let’s see. We’re just waiting for Dana, it’s not time to make the good decision or not. But I hopefully go fight in Curitiba.”

According to the ex-champ, he has already had prior discussions with Diaz and Co. about potentially running back this summer.

“I think it’s a very interesting fight because the last fight with me and Nick it was a No-Contest. I talk to manager nick a couple months ago about this fight and Nick say, okay lets go do it and talk to Dana.’ So we’re just waiting for Dana. It’s too early to talk about that but hopefully I fight in Curitiba,” he concluded.

Silva initially defeated the Stockton slugger at UFC 183 back in 2015, but after Anderson failed a post-fight drug test, the fight was ruled a “No Contest” and he was suspended for a year. Diaz also failed his drug test, popping hot for marijuana.

While an intriguing rematch, getting Diaz to commit to it and actually showing up will be a difficult task, as he hasn’t competed since that night. And according to those closest to him, he’s already retired from the fight game.

Nevertheless, Silva knows what he wants and if Nick is willing to play ball, UFC 237 — which currently features a women’s Strawweight title fight between Rose Namajunas and Jessica Andrade — could get a bit more interesting.
