Marina Rodriguez and Cynthia Calvillo faced each other in a women’s Strawweight clash tonight (Sat., Dec. 7, 2019) at UFC on ESPN 7, which took place inside Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Following a very competitive fight, Rodriguez was awarded the decision win.

Calvillo ate a right hand then ducked into double underhooks, where she worked for a takedown along the fence. Rodriguez denied the takedown and began unleashing clinch knees to the jaw. Calvillo survived the heavy shots and scored another takedown, advancing into mount! Unfortunately for Calvillo, the clock ran out before she could truly take advantage of the dominant position.

Calvillo circled the outside to start the second, while Rodriguez stalked. Calvillo landed a good right hand, absorbed a knee. Calvillo jabbed more often, while Rodriguez really loaded up on her right hand with worse accuracy. A couple good kicks scored for the Brazilian. Good right hand from Rodriguez. Body kick landed from Rodriguez. Rodriguez scored with a great sequence in the clinch: right hand, knee, body kick. The body kick hurt Calvillo, and Rodriguez turned it up with good combinations in the moments afterward. Rodriguez attempted a jump knee near the bell.

Rodriguez stuck her foe with a front kick to the face and then knee. Calvillo tried to double up on her right hand. Calvillo scored a double leg takedown. She landed in great position, immediately threatening the mount and guillotine choke. Rodriguez defended, but Calvillo used that as an opportunity to land some hard elbows from half guard before attacking with the kimura. Rodriguez gave up her back while defending the arm. Calvillo ripped off some good punches while fighting to get under the neck. Rodriguez tried to transition, but Calvillo just kept smashing her with ground strikes. Just as the fight appeared to be nearing it’s end, Rodriguez managed to regain her footing with 30 seconds remaining! Rodriguez finished the round chasing, trying to snap some front kicks.

Ultimately, it was a very competitive 15 minutes of combat, and both women had seriously strong moments where they seemed to be closing in on the finish.
