What the heck happened to Cody Garbrandt?!?
Nothing that would warrant concern, it appears, as the former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) bantamweight champion recently signed to fight 135-pound standout Pedro Munhoz at the upcoming UFC 235 pay-per-view (PPV) event, locked and loaded for Sat., March 2, 2019 inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
That’s according to a report from ESPN.
“No Love” jumped out to an 11-0 start to his mixed martial arts (MMA) career, one that included nine knockouts and a title-winning performance against Dominick Cruz at UFC 207. Unfortunately for Garbrandt, the wheels fell off the wagon in back-to-back wars with ex-teammate TJ Dillashaw, resulting in consecutive knockout losses at UFC 217 and UFC 227.
While this will be his first non-title fight in over two years, the competition doesn’t get any easier. Munhoz (17-3, 1 NC) is coming off a technical knockout win over the notoriously durable Bryan Caraway last November, marking his second straight win after turning away Brett Johns at UFC 227. “The Young Punisher” is now 7-3 (1 NC) inside the Octagon and has never been finished in his pro career.
Fun fight.
UFC 235 is expected to feature the light heavyweight showdown between reigning champion Jon Jones and top contender Anthony Smith, assuming “Bones” can obtain his MMA license in Nevada. In addition, Tyron Woodley is expected to put his 170-pound title on the line against welterweight wunderkind Kamaru Usman.
Stay tuned for more UFC 235 fight card announcements in the coming weeks.
